Title: Lost Egg's 2022 Plog - Classic HeroQuest & more...ish
Post by: Lost Egg on December 31, 2021, 11:30:27 AM
Once again it's the dawn of a new year and I thought I might actually start a new plog for the year as I have been meaning to...for many a year. So, without further ado welcome to...

Lost Egg's 2022 Plog
(https://i.imgur.com/DmeZ8XJ.jpg)

I know it's New Years Eve but I thought I'd get things started with what I've been working on this festive season, some classic HeroQuest orcs. I know they are fairly basic but I really quite like these minis.

Next up for painting are some classic metal minis for the Orc Chieftain, Shaman and a small base of Snotlings, all for HeroQuest. After that it'll be a classic troll.

So what's coming for 2022 I hear you ask? Well for the last couple of years I've been running a summer HQ campaign for the kids and each year I've been slowly working away at cobbling together a set, getting everything built and whatnot. For the 2021 quest I had the board built and painted as well as all the furniture so this year I'm going to try and get all the minis painted. It'll be the culmination of the story so I have quite a list: Heroes, Orcs, Undead, Skaven, Fimir & Elves.

Apart from HeroQuest I have a load more minis to paint and I've been playing about with some rules for a couple of games too. I'm trying not to set anything too solid lest my head explode so we'll just see how the year goes.

And here we are just a week into the new year and I've already finished some minis...

Some classic metal minis which fit in quite well with the plastic ones (see below). In order to tie them all in together I went with the same colour selection though I added purple for the shaman to make him stand out a wee bit. Here's a shot of all my HQ greenskins...

The only mini I have left for this faction is a troll who's next in my painting Q.

Update time! Behold a dread(ful)ed troll!

Another lovely classic mini. I won this gruesome chap off ebay last year and the daft whatnot who posted it to me just chucked him in a jiffy bag so he arrived doing the limbo and both his ankles snapped when I tried easing him back into place. In the end I had to pin the feet back on and resculpt the ankles but I think he now looks no worse for the ware. For his colour scheme I took inspiration from...the gummy bears cartoon  lol

I thought I'd throw in a shot of the big fella next to his nemesis. Hopefully I'll get a game of SoloQuest in on Thursday so we might see these meet up for a fight!

I was going to paint a couple of heroes next but I feel the pull of the dark side once again...

I finally gave up on trying to find someone to make me some custom D8 HQ Combat Dice and made up a batch of my own...

I also made up some new D4 Movement Dice; they have the numbers 1-4 repeated on the faces. The black D4s are for recording monster body points.

I've also been playing with the idea of a new board, one without corridors; the outer ring of squares would be grass to represent outside of the dungeon / temple / cave etc. I'd also like to make the squares bigger again so I came up with this paper mock up using 40mm squares...

My slayer tragically met his end just before the entrance to the Orc Chieftain's Throne Room. Hmm maybe he should have gone exploring with a buddy...but at least he racked up a fairly good tally first...

That's quite an output Lost Egg!  :o Will you be using your "Age of Heroes" rules for this?

Thanks Bravo Six.

To be honest it hadn't occurred  ??? I've not done anything with Age of Heroes for a while as I kinda got snowed under with projects and crashed. So I decided to try and keep things simpler with the new year, focusing on finishing my HeroQuest set, or at least enough for a campaign I'm playing with the kids over the summer.

Fimir!!

Great minis even though something odd happened to their necks fusing their heads to their bodies  o_o

I really like these minis and much prefer them at this size (the right size).

Next up will be some heroes...

Painting progress has been slow but I have not been idle, first up the barbarians!

The HQ barbarian's sword had snapped off previously so I had to pin that back on. Painting wise I'm happy with this couple. I'm not convinced with the sculpting of the mouth of the female barbarian but never mind. My kids use these guys for our SummerQuests and so I went with a 40k Salamander transfer for the shield as my daughter is a bit crazy for dragons.

Next up is my progress on my new HQ board, first up the card and paper test piece...

Then here's a WIP shot of the new board, it's a 50x50cm 12mm thick plywood sheet with some stripwood sides and I've started sticking on the magnetic receptive sheet...

Finally the sheet is all on and the grid marked out...

The random black area in the middle is where I ran out of white sheet and had to use black instead, it's slightly thicker but should be ok as its less than 0.5mm difference. You can see it next to my current Compact HQ board which while good can feel a little cramped sometimes in game. The squares for the new board are 40mm and with the new way of orientating the rooms there is so much more space.

So the next job will be to cut & glue all the foam floor & wall tiles...this may take some time...

Thanks Bravo Six!  8) I've already started work on trimming up some foam.

Progress! Working on the foam floor & wall tiles...

Tiles are done and sand added...

Finally a bit of colour...

The board is chugging along quite nicely; the colours are blocked in so now its shading, highlights etc. As you can the plan for the outer ring of tiles is to make them 'outside' the dungeon / temple etc.

That looks very HeroQuest like Egg. Good job on all of that!  :-* And you probably spent less making it than one would on a used, hard to find, extremely expensive boxed version on eBay these days!  lol

Cheers Bravo Six  8) I expect so though I do have an actual board that I picked up fairly cheaply on eBay a few years ago  lol

The squares are tiny though...even with the 15mm minis I was using back then. The new size works much better, once it's finished I'll have to play a SoloQuest and share some pics.

Well that almost NEVER happens so Bravo! Usually bits and bobs, and even rules can be expensive.

And the new board is done...

I'm pretty pleased with how its turned out and I'm glad I went for simpler tiles than I did with my previous board. I've yet to play a game on it but hopefully soon. In the mean time I've got to finish tweaking my Blank Quest pdf etc to allow for the new board and then it's back to the ratmen!

Thanks Bravo...here's a bit more, behold some vile ratmen!

I thought I'd go with a dirty grimy look with these classic plastic minis. I've got more to come though next time it'll be some old school metal...

They're looking great.

But aren't they a bit... advanced for this project? ;)

I'm thinking of painting the minis that came with a lot of my old GW boxed games. There's quite a few of them, so I was thinking of buying into Speed or Contrast paints for that. Did you use any of those here?

Thanks Daeothar  8)

I see what you did there  lol

Nope, never used either of them. I prefer to take my time with painting so would rather have fewer minis than try to seed things up...maybe that's why it's taking me an age to get these done and why I already have a backlog of project ideas  o_o

Behold another update, I'm on a roll...

A couple of classic rat ogres and some slightly not-so-classic giant rats. I'm pretty happy with these guys though I may have got a wee bit carried away with the gore on the fists of one rat ogre. I also managed to make a small start on the last two skaven for my HeroQuest project (at least for now) so 2022 is really starting to shape up into a productive year for me  8)

Here be the last of me Skaven...

I thought I'd go lighter with their robes so that the leaders stand out a touch more from the rest. The White Seer is blind so I gave him milky eyes. There's no rules for the Champion in HQ but I've cobbled something together...though I haven't added anything for the poisoned globes...hmm...

And a group shot of them all...

Some lovely classic sculpts here.

Next up will be some Undead for HeroQuest but first a short intermission.

I've been playing with some ideas for simple ruins and have done a mock up. I've also been toying with a kind of setting agnostic* ruleset for small scale action over a 2ft board so I'd like to make around half a dozen ruins to fight over. I've also started putting together some classic 2nd Ed 40k starter set minis and some fantasy plastics for playtesting but no pics of them just yet.

*I wanted a set that handles both sci-fi and fantasy as well as sci-fi vs. fantasy with around a dozen or two minis per side.

About a month and a half later and the ruins are done.

The ruins were knocked together fairly quickly from 6mm foam with 1mm plasticard for the base. The classic spiky trees, that I've knicknamed Bub-Bubs, are foam balls with cocktail sticks and are great for blocking lines of sight. There's a smattering of references in there too just for kicks.

The board I've popped them on is 2x2ft and as you can see the terrain is pretty dense. When it comes to the painting I wanted to go with something a bit cleaner than you normally see and I think they work well.

Next up will be some Undead for HeroQuest with some classic plastic minis and some of the new Oathmark undead too...

Great work and results!

I've been on a bit of a Rogue Trader spree of late, and those spiky plants are on my short-list to make, as period appropriate terrain pieces.  :)

Top notch work on yours!  8)

Thanks Ragsta. All I used on the walls was some home made modge-podge: mixing flour, water, PVA and paint in equal measure then adding a bit of salt too. The bases are a mix of sand and fish tank pebbles then once painted I sprinkled on some tea (from Tetley tea bags) and static grass etc.

Love the spikey trees, take me back to flicking through old white dwarf mags as a kid.

Cheers, I know what you mean mate. I've been meaning to make some for ages and though I was only going to make some ruins I thought I might as well have one popping up inside a building...then added a few extras too. I've still got some foam balls left so I'm sure I will be making some more at some point.

Took a little longer than I hoped but I finished my HeroQuest Undead. The Witch Lord, Mummies & Zombies are obviously original HQ plastics but the skellies are from Oathmark but I think they work fit well together..

I really like the Bronze Age European style of the Oathmark minis. I also tried to do something a little different with the Witch Lord and avoided using any obvious eeevvviiilll colours so chose with white instead; to contrast against the white I decided to add some gore but I think I might have got carried away...just a touch...

That now leaves me with just one more faction to complete before the SummerQuest with my kids...well that and actually making all the maps etc  lol though I do have a load of notes so it shouldn't take too long...hopefully...

Just managed to get these guys & gals finished in time for the 2nd quest of the summer. These are all classic Warhammer Fantasy Dark Elf sculpts; a little heavy on the detail in some places but nice all the same...gotta love the BIG HAIR

I converted the Cold Ones as these were originally mounts; I just chopped off the seats and sculpted a fur over the top. The rare chariot steeds would have been nice to use but damn they are expensive so I went with these instead.

I just got back from holiday recently and while all my hobby bits n'bobs were left at home I did get the chance to source some new kit...

A new paint palette to go with my water dish. I painted these up at Craftworks in Castletown, Isle of Man; it's one of those paint your own pottery places. The water bowl I painted in 2019 and while I've been using a ceramic tile for years it's much bigger than I need so I picked a suitable replacement and so far so good.

Before I went away I also made a lot of headway on the next bit of terrain for HeroQuest which I finished last night...

While not exactly a show stopper it works for our games, the kids already cut their way through scores of greenskins to cross it  >:D

Two more Heroes ready for Questing and just in time for the 5th game of this years SummerQuest with the kids; the Fire Sorceress Razel & Sir Henry of the Purple Hand.

These plucky adventurers are occasional guest stars to our Summer Quests, with the final quest of a 3 year story arc looming they will be returning just in time to help with the final showdown!

But, before the 6th and final quest I need to get a couple of dungeon tea lights converted up...never enough time!  o_o
