Build Something Competition 2022 'The Potato Cup'
This description has been wildly plagiarised (with permission!) from Hammers’ similar post for the 2021 BSC.
The theme for the BSC2022 is: Rest
GENERAL RULES
Please use this child board in the Workbench section to post your build threads.
The official start date is 01:00 GMT Saturday 8th January 2022 and all applicants must notify their intent to take part on the registration thread by Saturday January 22nd, 2022. They will then be listed in the registration post. The list of entrants will be in order of which their intent has been posted. Please let me know if your username is wrong.
YOU CAN START YOUR BUILD THREAD IN THIS SUB-FORUM DIRECTLY.
Please name your thread according to this pattern:
BSC2022 <member name> <build title> - for example, 'BSC2022 Vanvlak Four-poster bed', where ‘Vanvlak’ would be the user's forum name and Four-Poster bed' would be the object being built.
If you change your mind, if Real Life intrudes or if you realise after some contemplation the theme is not to your taste - just let me know and I shall remove your name.
One entry per member (no joint contributions).
A dedicated Gallery has been set up just for hosting contest images so please post your photos there. You can then add them to your build thread - any questions regarding this just let me know.
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=gallery;cat=104 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=gallery;cat=104)
Finished entries must be submitted no later than midnight Sat 19th March 2022, and the voting will start shortly after. That should allow for plenty of time to build something.
The build threads of the entrants should include as many progress shots as possible, including sketches, sources of inspiration etc. NO PHOTOS OF THE FINISHED ENTRY SHOULD BE POSTED ON THE THREAD - painting in progress is not allowed, only primed entries are permissible on the build threads - if you are unsure then please ask. I would however turn a blind eye to small details which have to be finished before assembly (for example a pilot and controls in an enclosed cockpit).
Keep in mind that the documentation of the build process has some impact on how people vote.
The first entries must consist of either one photo OR a photo-montage of the finished piece. No photo manipulation will be allowed apart from cropping, white balance and contrast within reason. Again, if you are unsure then please ask. You may include one separate 'standard' figure in the final entry photo to indicate the relative size of the entry.
Photo size should be 1000x1000 pixels and sent as a jpeg to bsc2022submission@gmail.com
Depending on the number of entries, voting will take place in one or more group, and then, again depending of the number of entries, the top one or two entries of each group will advance to a final vote.
You will be allowed to enter new photos between rounds if you like. It has proven a good idea to keep interest up among voters.
For the last round you will be allowed to use your build in a "fully dramatized" setting, meaning placing the model on a game board surrounded with as many wargames miniatures you like.
A NOTE ON BIAS AND CONDUCT
I (Vanvlak) will, hopefully be entering a build myself. I've done so in the previous edition I coordinated (I did not do well), and only once came near the semi-finals :D
While everyone is allowed, as per usual, to comment in progress threads, please keep things encouraging and constructive.
Although winners will be voted by the members collective of the LAF, if there is any sense of foul play the judges’ decision is final, although we would hope that it won't be necessary given the friendly nature of the LAF.
THEME RULES
The entry must include something that ties in with the theme of ‘Rest’.
It’s an easier theme to define than last year’s: you have to construct a model (scenery, a vehicle, anything else) which has something to do with, or depicts, the theme of Rest . I very much appreciate that this can be very broad, but if you are uncertain whether your idea fits the bill correctly, pm me or post on the BSC thread to get a clarification.
One feature of the entries is that they should be practical gaming or scenery pieces, so no varnished walnut veneer bases or artful backdrops with LEDs and baroque trimmings.
Remember that the competition is run within the confines of the Workbench board: you have to build something. What singles out the Build Something Contest is that it is about construction of something new. The vast majority of the piece should be scratch built, and only 0-25% can be commercially bought items or figures. The rest must be handmade. If you have any questions either ask them here or via pm, but please label your pm Build Something 2022.
Any period or setting is allowed as long as it fits with the theme including sci-fi, historical, pulp, fantasy etc.
Just like previous years, any amount of 3D printing is allowed but we ask you to be especially diligent in including images from design steps (3D design files) and of part printouts in the your progress thread.
Conversion of commercially-bought items is allowed also e.g. as long as it is a major 'refactoring'. Another example could be a plastic aeroplane kit: adding a couple of extra parts to the kit would not be sufficient to qualify, but having some of the parts from a sprue on an entirely new build would be fine. Again, if in doubt, please ask.
It's not possible to cover all the eventualities, so please use your common sense and play fair. :D
Good luck, and happy building to all - and don't forget to REGISTER YOUR INTENT and START A THREAD.
Post any rules queries and comments as replies.
* The name 'The Potato Cup' comes from an early run of the competition where a number of items were offered to the winner, among them a raw unpeeled potato. The winner picked the potato. The name stuck.

Do we apply here?
At the front office, they directed us to BSC Hall, but there's no one there yet, and some old man told me to just enter my form over here.
Look; I filled out both sides, in triplicate, as indicated in the syllabus...
-
Please be kind to us idiots.
I am OK with the build part, but I may struggle with
the Teck-Knee-Kal stuff.
Bear in mind if you do come up with a fool proof system'
nature will produce a better quality fool (often me) lol
-
Were should we post our build thread? Here? Don#t bother fiound it. ;)
Is this supposed to be one base worth of terrain etc or can we add several bases as one entry?
-
Question re:rules. I am building a building (a farm) but it is designed to be placed on a mat I've already finished. Am I allowed to place this building on mat, provided the building is the primary focus? My plan was to crop tight to the building
-
Ooh, er I think I am going to have to bow out as this BSC looks to finish 3 months earlier than last year and I will be primarily engaged in another project until Mar. 20th. :(
-
So is this the place to register my intent or I'm missing something? ???
-

Yeah, this will be a serious challenge for me too, but I think I'll give it a shot regardless. Whether or not it'll be enough remains to be seen of course...

Out the hall, down the stairs.
(or: in the main BSC forum; you'll see all of the other 2022 threads as well ;) )

It's actually the second window on the mezzanine to the BSC Hall, or here: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?board=48.0 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?board=48.0) :D

During construction, it would be ideal to avoid including the mat as far as possible, unless the building is actually to be constructed fitted permanently to it. For the final pic, it should not be a problem, but as you pointed out, the focus shuld be on the entry in the pic.
-

In the years prior to 2021, we limited to three bases - last year's competition, being difficult terrain, had a bit of a different nature, which was why Hammers rightly went up to six.
As the current topic is a more conventional one, I would return to the limit of three.

That is impossible, I'm afraid. I cannot create a foolproof system, as that would exclude me outright from the process of creation of said system, meaning said creation of said system would just not happen. :(
-

Sorry to hear that :(
I think it drifted back to its original start with the start of the year, mostly because I forgot that last year's had been started later...
-
So we can start? :)
Going to have to make some rapid progress on mine, as the next month or so could be a bit crazy...might need to look for a new job shortly :?
-
Heh; I'm starting a new job on February 1st, so it'll be an exciting/busy/taxing time there for me as well...

Good luck - to both of you - with jobs. Hope it works out well.
As for starting - the start date is today, so - go for it!

Thanks. Not permanently affixed, but definitely designed primarily for it. I am doing my basic designing around the mat (as you can see in my thread). I don't imagine once I shoot photos will be anything more than some green blur in the background

Thank to Westfalia Chris for setting up the notice advertising BSC2022, and the image gallery, which can be found here:

I also placed the link in the first post in this thread.

Hi, all
I'm sorry that I won't be able to join the BSC this year. I've ideas that I want to build, but there are too many other things in my life right now to get involved with this time.
However, to celebrate the theme of 'rest', here are some local North Vancouver boys to inspire your builds!

Saw that band several times back in the Ol' Days. Always a great show. :D

Enjoyable, thanks for the link. :)

I have been completely unable to decide anything regarding this, for or against.
All hobby stuff has been on hold for more than a year now, apart from the last BSC which I managed to complete somehow, starting the build after the original deadline. ::)
Now I might be able to find some time (and space), but the troubling thing is that I feel like the creative side of my brain has been switched off for so long that I don't know how to restart it. :-I
I've managed to come up with precisely one idea thus far but I don't know if I really want to build that one.
Oh well, I'll take one more look tomorrow. That's what deadlines are for. lol
-
Dang! Took time off from all hobbies and just a quick look only to find out I missed the deadline by a couple days. And I have a few good ideas too.

Unless anyone has any strong objection, I would let you in anyway.
We'll just give you a penalty, for example, doing 2 - 3 hundred laps of a racing track each time you glue something. :D

I’ll leave the decision on allowing me in to the amazingly talented and compassionate moderators (who have vemo/paypal). If i am allowed in, that penalty seems about right

All it took was one lager :D ;)

No problem - the more the merrier. ;)

I have no objections.

By the powers invested in me: go on then, start your thread! :D
-
Fine with me :)
-
Saturday 5th March, the deadline, is fast approaching. Too fast!
The field seems to be split between those who seem to have completed everything two weeks ago and those logging behind (me, for example :( this weekend will clinch it); with one or two who have progressed at a more steady pace and are doing nicely and comfortably.
It seems to that some of the entries are unsurprisingly but impressively brilliant - everyone seems to have upped their game! I can predict very tough voting. :D
And, I need to prepare an email address for receiving photos of the finished model too.
Good luck to all those still working on their models, and those who are painting them for the submission.
-
I think I’m not going to finish (again ::) lol). Just been too busy this past month unfortunately.
-
It is going to be touch & go for me too. :'(
-
Doubt v.much that I’ll finish mine either - funny, would have thought I’d have a lot more time on my hands, but it turns out being out of work is a full-time occupation lol
-
Last weekend, crap that went by fast. Weather put a serious delay on sanding, priming but i should be able to make it in time.
-
I’ve started painting & nowhere near finishing & I’ve not even got the base finished, I think I might struggle to be done in time.
I will probably have have to rely on next Saturday morning, to see whether I get done or not. :?
-
I have it built, but have had no time whatsoever to put paint on it. Had a coworker suddenly leave for a month, and we still haven't decided if she will still have a job, but it isn't her fault, so she likely will. Her husband sprung a month-long trip to Mexico on her for Valentines, but that meant she didn't have time to ask for the time off in a way that gave us time to be prepared for it. Like, a week's notice.
Pleh.
-
I regret to say that I will not be able to get an entry in this year. Multiple factors and lack of terrain mojo :?
-
I’m pretty much finished, just photos to do. And maybe a bit more fiddling lol
-
I started painting, will see if I can finish it on time...
-
I'm working on it now... Starting far too late, of course. Inspiration was missing - and so were some of the tools, because the break from hobby stuff has been huge (again). Simply getting started was probably the hardest part.
Last year I said that the entry wouldn't be too spectacular. That was the truth, but I did complete it. This year I repeat that prediction and see what I can put together. ::)
-
I am not sure if I will get finished in time :'(
-
Sorry to ask. Could you point me in the right direction concerning number and size of pictures to be send to you , please. I can#t find it!

-
Yeah, I'm not gonna make it.
Sorry, all.
-
How big should the fotos be? sorry to hassle.
-
Yeah, I'm going to have to drop out as well, too busy this week to have any chance of finishing by the deadline.
-
With that many folks not being able to hit the deadline, would it be too much to suggest pushing it back a week?

We did last year. didn't we?
I have been working on mine, but would not be
averse to an extension.
Link to prove (some) progress.

As Dolmot mentioned above : 1000x1000 pixels.
-
I would be very pleased wirh one more week to finish the project!!
-
I don't need the extra week, but would appreciate a full quota of entries.
-
I would consider an extension favourably: are there any objections to extending by a week?
I for one would appreciate seeing more entries completed and participating.
Also - thanks to those who replied on the image size, sorry for my absence, I was a bit overrun by work in the past few days.
-

I think the extra week would be a good idea, especially to get more entries in
-
I wouldn't mind an extra week either and more finished entries are always better :)
-
No objection from me towards an extension.
-
Fine with me :)
-
OK for me to
-
The extra week would be great!

one more week would be great

The extra week would be great!
2 weeks? That's just being greedy ;)
-
I've been forced to adjust my priorities. Still working on the build whenever I can take a break, but it's very unlikely to materialise by this Saturday. No guarantee for a week later either, because needs must, but at least it would be more realistic.
I don't object the idea. However, I don't exactly push it either, because then I could be the guy who requests changes yet disappoints anyway. Voting empty or something. :-I
-
Another week is fine with me considering I started late
-
Seeing there are no objections, lets go for an addition.
To try to grab as many participants as possible, I will add 2 weeks.
I'll update the regs later today as I'm in a bit of a rush at work.
-
Good news, it should have stopped raining by then lol lol lol

Nope, I was mistaken, the sun came out, so I've taken the gazebo down, and my neighbour has hung out her washing. That should guarantee that it's persisting down within the hour... lol

Vanvlak do you heve an email adress set up allready? Would like to send the first picture.
-
Vanvlak do you heve an email adress set up allready? Would like to send the first picture.
Not yet - I have been badly caught up with work.
If you - or anyone - want to get it done rapidly, I can send my own email via PM.
-
First picture sent. ;) ;)
-
First picture sent. ;) ;)
And received :o 8)

I just want to make sure I don't miss the submission email address :)
Done with my build... I may use the extra time to add a little element or two.
-
I finished my build and got a photo taken. Just need the address to send
-
UPDATE ON BSC
I am sorry I have been a bit missing, real life came in heavy these couple of weeks; mostly work stuff.
As promised, the deadline was shifted by two weeks, to the 19th of March 2022.
I am still setting up the email - anyone who wishes to submit directly can PM me and I will send my email address, to which you can send your complete model photo.
A couple have arrived already, and this is going to be a tough one to judge, once again.
-
UPDATE 2 on BSC:
You can send your submissions to: bsc2022submission@gmail.com
I'll try to reply to confirm receipt ASAP.
-
Email sent

Email sent
Email received - really cracking good job there too 8)

Finished & should be photographing it tomorrow, but...
if you are unsure then please ask. You may include one separate 'standard' figure in the final entry photo to indicate the relative size of the entry.
Can I include a figure with the picture (the first) that I hope to send
to you tomorrow, or only if I get through to the 'final' ? ????
-
Can I include a figure with the picture (the first) that I hope to send to you tomorrow, or only if I get through to the 'final' ? ????
I believe "final" refers to the contest photo everyone submits, just reflecting its finalised state. That's how it has been previously, AFAIK.
Mine should be in, BTW. I had to keep the design simple and cut a bunch of corners but hey, I built something and it's an entry. :)

Yes you can.

Thanks guys. Now my annual 'how to shrink the picture
to 1000 x 1000 pixels, & send same. lol lol lol

Never tell the public what your target was, just draw a ring around
whatever you managed to hit, & call that the target. :D
-
Deadline today, all.
Not that many entries this year - even mine will come a cropper it seems. I only have one detail to go, but then I need to undercoat it (in gale force winds and showers? Not likely) and paint it, so it seems I am out too.
-
I'm almost done, but I have to work today, so a couple of finishing touches with the paint brush has to wait till I'm home this afternoon....
Then all is left to make a photo and I'm not looking forward to that. o_o
-
Done and sent, though I could not shrink it to 1000 x 1000 pixels,
no matter what I tried. I am NOT good wiv 'Tek-know-ledge-he'
here's hoping Vanvlac take pity on me.
Good luck to all that managed to finish.
Now, does anyone want a Sci-Fi NAAFI
junk? Come to that anyone want last
year's derelict Roller Coaster ? Anyone ??? ???
lol lol lol

One day we should have a thread to see where they are today (our old entries, that is).
Received, and no problem, will adjust it myself (or try, anyway).
-
Unless I'm missing a pic, we have 11 entries this year, congratulations to the finishers.
I didn't make it. I finished the build, so close. :'(
But (stop moaning and get on with it, Vanvlak!), on the positive side, there's some really cool stuff there, so get your judging boots on - I hope to get the galleries for voting done within a week, fingers crossed!
Here's the list of received entries so far, in alphabetical order - please do let me know if I missed anyone's submission:
Aircav
Blackwolf
Dolmot
DrMatthias
Has.been
Ichwillauch

G'night all :D

Thanks for your efforts John :)
-
I was cutting it fine but mine is now in. I am looking forward to seeing all the entries. Thanks for organising it Vanvlak!
-
Thanks guys, it's actually fun doing this - also a nice distraction.
Bearwoodman, yours is in too, I just sent the email reply 8)

Thanks to everyone who took part, and good luck to the twelve entrants, who have been kind enough to provide me with an even number of entries for a neat pair of groups of six!
I'll be checking pic sizes and stuff, and will prepare the polls - hopefully, by today week at the latest.
-
Well done everyone that got their entries over the line :)

Many thanks, & WOW I'm in the top 8 :o :o :o

Just curious, but why not go with 4 groups of 3?
-

Nah! One group of twelve. lol lol lol
I think Vanvlak knows what he is doing.
six pairs = six entries in the next round
Three pairs= Three entries in the final (?)
Then a vote off would give us a first,
second & third. Gold, silver & bronze.
Very Olympic. :D
-
I think the last photo from everyone should be their entry - whayever level of finished or not. Then i just might have a chance of making to the second round. Hahahahahaha

Exactly this! 8)
I'm jealous of all of you; my hobyy time has been reduced to near zero since starting my new job. Still worth it so far, but I'm starting to feel the itch to get building and painting again...
-
I am feeling a little left out not being able to compete this year :(.
-
Oh, I thought he meant 2 groups of 6. I like the gold silver and bronze finish.
Er - so did I!
-
Well done everyone :)
-
I checked the photos, adjusted the odd size here and there, and located the two I had forgotten to save in the folder I am keeping everything in!
Seeing all the options suggested for voting, I just have to decide how to proceed and get on with the voting.
So it's:
2 groups of 6, then a final with 2, totaling 2 rounds, with 1st and 2nd ranks from the final round
6 groups of 2, then 3 groups of 2, then the final with 3, totaling 3 rounds, with 1st and 2nd and 3rd ranks from the final round
4 groups of 3, then a final with 3, with 1st and 2nd and 3rd ranks from the final round

6 groups of 2, then 3 groups of 2, then the final with 3, totaling 3 rounds, with 1st and 2nd and 3rd ranks from the final round
4 groups of 3, then a final with 3, with 1st and 2nd and 3rd ranks from the final round
I will be happy with what’s best for you to organise around real life :D (but really I’d like to see 6 of 2 etc. lol)
-
Oh, I thought he meant 2 groups of 6. I like the gold silver and bronze finish.
Er - so did I!
Oops! Sorry for sticking my oar in. :o
I like
6 groups of 2, then 3 groups of 2, then the final with 3, totaling 3 rounds, with 1st and 2nd and 3rd ranks from the final round
I like this one, well I would, wouldn't I :D
-
I ok with any of those three. :)
-
I don't know if I'm making things more or less clear by introducing a bunch of options. ;) In the following notation, e.g. "6/6" stands for two groups of 6 entries each and so on. The systems I find somehow realistic are:
two rounds
2a) 6/6 => 2
2b) 4/4/4 => 3
2c) 3/3/3/3 => 4
three rounds
3a) 2/2/2/2/2/2 => 3/3 => 2
3b) 2/2/2/2/2/2 => 2/2/2 => 3
3c) 3/3/3/3 => 2/2 => 2
And to map them to the more verbose ones suggested earlier...
2 groups of 6, then a final with 2, totaling 2 rounds, with 1st and 2nd ranks from the final round
6 groups of 2, then 3 groups of 2, then the final with 3, totaling 3 rounds, with 1st and 2nd and 3rd ranks from the final round
4 groups of 3, then a final with 3, with 1st and 2nd and 3rd ranks from the final round
...these would be options 2a, 3b and...wait, what, 2b or 2c?
Thoughts:
- Two or three rounds? In past years, we've seen a bit of voter fatigue from too many rounds. Three shouldn't be too much, though. Last year we did 5/5/5/6 => 2/2 => 2 when there were 21 entries. For 12...either one might work.
- Regarding the final, two finalists is a classic, three is an interesting podium-style twist. The latter might work better with two rounds.
And the options listed above:
- 2a: A bit harsh elimination with only 1 of 6 getting to the final of two and that's it
- 2b: Less traditional, maybe more balanced in its convergence? Not bad for a two-round approach.
- 2c: Four finalists is a bit odd. Why not three rounds then?
- 3a: Slightly asymmetric when the number of entries per round goes up and down (2, 3, 2), but leads to a classic final.
- 3b: Unusual but interesting. The largest number of matches with the smallest number of entries in each.
- 3c: Traditional semifinal-final pattern, going from 2+2 to 2.
No hard preference. You can possibly see from the notes which ones I'd find better than others, though. :)

lolWe are all winners ::)

When does the voting start? I know at least one who’s getting my vote

As soon as I find some time to get it all together!
Sorry guys, will try to get this done by Thursday at the very latest. I wish I were as confident of picking a winner :D
-
I guess when I mentioned 4 groups of 3 I saw the top entry from each group advancing to a second round which would be two head-to-head contests with the two winners advancing to the final. Would 3 rounds be too much? The competition is normally 4 rounds isn't it? In any event I think all of the options are good and would work out well.

Einey, meaney, miney mo... lol lol lol

Take your time mate, we’re all patient and it’ll be worth it :)

lol
Thanks - I agree it will have been worth it - group one is up for voting, the remainder to follow directly.
-
Sorry for the wait - I think you'll find it was well worth it.
Well done to all who took part, and especially to the twelve competitors - receiving these was quite fun, with each pic being a showcase of cool.
It's a public holiday here today, so I finally made it to post the pics to the galleries and then set up the voting.
In the end I went for 4 groups of three.
The four winners go to a semi-final, and then the final will include the last two.
Voting for round one ends on Sunday 10 April at 12:00 GMT.
I will try to set up the next round directly after that deadline*, and give each round one week.
*except it's my wedding anniversary, so possibly not!

I personally would recommend not. lol

I personally would recommend not. lol
Especially if you want another anniversary next year. lol
-
The finished entries look really good, worth the wait. :)
-
Voting will close tomorrow; and hopefully, round 2 (of 3) will appear as well.
Just a reminder that any participant who wishes to send new images can do so - perhaps I should give a few days grace before opening round 2 to give time for any additional photography.
-
I was one day late - I am afraid I gave the wedding anniversary priority, you don't get to have your 28th anniversary every day :D
The voting for round one is closed.
For those with an interest in numbers, strangely enough three rounds has 110 voters each, whilst Round 4 had 112; conversely, Round four had by far the fewest posts commenting.
Moving on to Round 2 of BSC2022 are the winners of Round 1:
Group 1 - Aircav - Slum tenement

Congratulations to all who took part, it was a stunning spectacle all round.

Thank you Jon :)

Thanks for running it.
Grateful for your time. Right decision on the Anniversary :D
As I said before, 'Woo-Hoo! I made it into the last 12' :)
Now I wonder who will win, they are all great AND...
what is next years theme going to be?????
I'm betting on Technology.
-
Worthy winners - all four. Well done :-*
-
No Rest for the wicked and the BSC coordinator *especially as my entry is STILL not finished!) - but happy Easter to all.
I have just posted the semifinal polls for BSC2022, with two semi-finalists in each.
The poll will remain open until today week.
If any of the semifinalists thinks they have a chance to get to the final and wish to present a new photo, please send it to me during this week, as I intend to start the final round today week.
Good luck to all of you.
Everyone else, get voting - it is NOT going to be an easy task :D
-
Voting for round 2 will close tomorrow morning, and round three (the final) begins tomorrow as well, so anyone who hasn't voted, please do so!
I think a round of applause is deserved by all four remaining competitors, whether they go through to the final or not, and to all voters, because voting was NOT an easy job! :D
-
Thanks for running the show Vanvlak!

Congratulations to Aircav, but also to Bearwoodman: the Where the Voordalak sleep diorama was superb.
That brings BSC2022 to an end. Thanks to everyone who took part and who voted.
Feedback on the BSC is welcome - was it too early in the year, too late? Too many rounds, or too few?
Cheers, your host for the BSC2022 show,
John

Congrats to the winners, due respect to all participants, many thanks to Vanvlak.

And also Bearwoodsman of course; both of your entries were awesome.
If all works out, I'll meet you here again next year... :D
