Title: BSC2022-has.beenNAAFI
Post by: has.been on January 05, 2022, 06:45:10 PM
As I still have a flipping big abandoned roller-coaster hogging
far too much shelf space, this time I'm aiming to make something
smaller. Still 28mm, but it will be a Sci-Fi version of a NAFFI van.
No idea how I will make it...yet. :D :D :D

I had to look that one up...

A food distribution van then, right?

And a scifi version to boot? I'm already getting 5th Element vibes!  8)

When we went on exercise (no matter how secret) the Bratty Van (or "Blue Van") always appeared!
The tea van frequented the Soltau military training area in Germany. The owner, Wolfgang Maier was renowned for turning up in the wettest miserable places with hot food and drinks, and of course the yellow handbags (If you know…). He was seen as the life saver to many a wet cold and hungry soldier.

A food distribution van then, right?
Yup.
It stands for Navy,_Army_and_Air_Force Institutes,
So I'll have to correct it from NAFFI to NAAFI.

I didn't know about that, & you'll have to elucidate about 'Yellow

Six packs of Herforder Pilsen. Yellow was the colour of the packaging.

In Australia the working equivalent was usually the Sallyman, a Salvation Army Land Rover that dispensed tea, coffee and cold cordial, usually lime. I’ve witnessed a mock company attack on a hot February day completely brought to a halt by the Sallyman driving up and dispensing cold drinks at the line of departure. No beer though.  :(

In 1977, when I was six, I was involved in a somewhat belated attempt to relieve the paratroopers at Arnhem. Driving up Hell's Highway in a Standard Tilly, cosplaying as XXX Corps with a bunch of vehicle enthusiasts (and being as received warmly by the locals as if we were actually liberating the places we visited).

Anyway, some guy had an Austin K2 NAAFI wagon on that trip, and he actually sold tea and coffee out of it, which I found pretty cool. Gotta love a Katy, though not as iconic as the ambulance version, I guess. So looking forward to seeing a Space NAAFI wagon. Will bring back happy memories of my childhood.  :)

In my time it was a 10 pack later reduced to an 8  pack of Herforder Pilsener beer. https://collection.nam.ac.uk/detail.php?acc=2018-04-3-1

I'm thinking of things like the floating skiff
from 5th Element (Chinese food outlet?)
as well as a lot of anti-grav (background)
vehicles in the Star Wars universe.

My wonderful wife doesn't throw things straight
into the bins. She runs items past me first.
Hence the basis of my hull...a broken,
'Air Wick Fresh Matic' room perfumer.

Sound of finger (finally) being pulled out.
I have just started on my build.
Picture 75 = Start (2.30pm GMT)  :o
76 = The back half is turned around,
& glued into the front half.
77 = Cardboard tube cut to length &
hot glued to couple of CDs.
    78 & 79 = Ship glued onto stand...It flippin works!!!
No time for careful planning, that's for wimps!
So it is all going to be done on the hoof. :?
80 = Start on the decking.
             81 = here she comes! :D

Now to leave it well alone until tomorrow, giving the
glue a chance to dry.

Oooops!!! Forgot to load the pictures. :o

Glue dried overnight, & it is still in one piece, however...

Picture 82 & 83 = Gaps!  :o :o
           84 & 85 = No worries, gaps filled.
86 = Due to the wonder of...Hard as Nails.
Our local Poundland sells it for £2 ( ???)

Work on the 'cabin' & covering the gap
between the upper & lower decks. I've
decided upon stairs.

Now to give it a chance to dry a little.

It just can't have car tyres hanging over the side,
to protect against bumping into things, so I had
a look around. Found three bases I had cut off
some Sci-fi figures purchased from Poundland.
Stuck them on. I see them as a low power motion
damper which will do the same job as...an old
car tyre. lol

Purchased, from (my favourite shop) Poundland,
a string of lanterns. One of these sawn in half will
become an ornate rear window on the stern.

More gubbins glued on last night.

Cabin struts, to support canopy.
Serving hatches, which will drop down & become the counter.
The rear.  Ornate cabin window & (noisy) engines above.
The front. Navigation aids.
Overview of the ship so far.

1) not 'flying' more a (not very reliable) anti-grav power unit.
'That's NOT flying, it's falling with style'  lol
2) Just about EVERYTHING I make is from 'junk', or
as I prefer to describe it, 'Construction Ready Appendage
    Possibilities'. (CRAP for short.  :D)

Today I'm waiting for the canopies (glue soaked paper towels)
to dry, then (weather permitting) spray undercoat it.

Thank you Golgotha.

Next the Awnings, heavily soaked with diluted wood glue.
Now the wait for it to dry, then comes...THE PAINTING !!! ;D
Title: Re: BSC2022-has.beenNAAFI
Post by: Golgotha on March 02, 2022, 12:31:06 PM
Awnings look great - in future if you do not want to spend hours waiting on dry time use Mod Podge instead of normal white glue - it is also stronger and seems to take paint better - though it costs significantly more. Mod Podge is also great as it does not warp things out of shapes like white glue or wood glue does.

Looking forward to seeing the painting. No doubt lots of weathering.

So what are the food options onboard? Can imagine some interesting staff working in such a place...

Thanks for that. I feel sure I've seen
it in our local Craftworld store. I'll
double check on my next visit.

A friend has done something similar
to the transfer thing, for posters on

a try. First though I'll have to master
how to REVERSE the image, so the
words work in the final view. lol

It does help that I haven't done any:-
planning,
careful measuring or
ages looking through the vast stock of 'interesting
bits & pieces'  lol lol lol

Also the craft is a bit like the Sheriff's own built house
in the wonderful film Unforgiven,
'Not a straight line anywhere'
It should, & will be, looking like it is
held together through force of habit & dirt.

More pictures taken, but as it is of undercoating
and rust effect, I don't think I'm allowed to show
them yet.
Hampered by typical British weather...It is raining! :-[
SHOULD get it 'finished' in time. Wouldn't mind the
(possible?) week extension though. Could (as Golgotha
suggested)do the staff/owner and some of the food.

Good luck to all contenders. :)

If that NAAFI perambulated near my house I would definitely order the roast gaspurtic, rat if they have, thinking clams those sound edible too and some rust for flavour and colour. Best would be hearing Wolfgang Maier recounting his war tales.

Think it is a very creative and fun build - especially like the colour.

Would like to see it in a game as the centerpiece and theme to a scenario.

Love it! I like how the story of the ship develops based on how it evolves. There are writers who plot out every scene in their story, and then there are ones who create the characters and let them take the action where it will. You, sir, are the counterpart to that type - brilliant!
