Title: BSC2022 Vanvlak Cryogenic Sleeping Quarters
Post by: Vanvlak on January 05, 2022, 09:13:42 PM
This would probably look like be the sort of thing they'd have on set for Plan 9 from Outer Space rather than a polished space opera, still, here goes...

A good century or two of rest never hurt anybody. Right?

Curious to see how this one is going to look!  8)

Just two? I think I might be going for a longer catnap.... :D

Nice :) Your builds always surprise!
Thank you.  :D
They generally surprise me too by turning out completely different from what I plan ...

I will.
The usual process of collecting odds and ends from my junk pile has started.
Long ago I found - I have no recollection where - part of the coin storage mechanism of a discarded vending machine.
This will be the main body of the build, or the area where the cryogenic chamber or chambers will be located.

I originally thought I would make this as a single room in a Space Hulk sort of scenario, but the shape of the coin storage shell gave me an idea - and here's where it starts to get complicated.

So you have this spaceship, which is somehow destroyed close to some planet. As an emergency measure, the cryogenic stasis rooms are reinforced structures which eject from the ship and serve as an emergency drop pod, capable of making an automated landing (that's one hell of an AI these things have!). One of them lands in a desolate spot. The sleepers remain undisturbed, the vessel is raided of bits and pieces by more primitive inhabitants of the place, and starts to decay, but the sleepers rest undisturbed as the planet dwellers seem to fear the 'dead' aliens (to them) in the chambers and do not want to wake them.

At least, the backstory is there...

I'm interested!

Your backgroundis cool and has vibes of the Rage! PC game, and I couldn't help but be reminded of my own BSC entry of two years ago.

Can't wait to see your take on it  :)

Was that the vegetation one? Cool, I'll have to take a look then!
And at Rage!, which I am unfamiliar with!

Here's some pics of some bits from the usual pile of rubbish I start my projects with:

vending machine coin storage and dispenser body - the base beneath it is 12" square:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiA_gMkgPXv41DDVkwz4zxxxWzBBoGfOIrsVxdC30zaAqmvmXkSD69QQZxblaAkRdB4MmmdClxLtssYSqfm79u0jy6eo_5MUaDXdVQk9HXoCLzJGuU7DDSi9pUVc7fvpjD0afJ0bN5UPYPslxHB_qppaEX1Gflg2PtrLjfOeHVsEvBBZwi_H7vVpnE=w640-h426)

other bits from the same device:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgHX2Tb2mVEuZudJJw0rm7YILswDKDVhZuJ-q-bNOpqlfl1kxK_m3mZX95VXNsQyYB41h6G0xIJU1-nnYholaRtl3esAcQlTI-Ym-qsXG436MMVHG_Bo71b7VON5p8t0QHJEPxFDo2-hXzXy3lYn0WzQVmI15LraAlcfUeQpUD_EqdSSFVNxekxn1I=w640-h426)

Where the main bits will go - it's a boxy affair:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhdoj7bfVM9lWEniPqZAYpw9YKIjEvHTVMWOSmFYNgcbdwYQTf55CwWgMw2Fk11cZAlkYo0RGu6qHj_12l447f2qQpzTZ9aniVwbrDm4t0jQDiC81quebqKeKa_yZDwei6c4_v6TdtnrnzoKC4x_9EK-joxB7GA0BXcHACvor7BPjesymr4s5Uf_Eg=w640-h426)

The white thing is the cryogenic chamber - I was going to make a number of enclosed ones, but decided to change tack a little and make just one, with the sleeper - an injured trooper kept in stasis - visible. As can be seen in the above image, he'll be the the focus of the scenery.

Here's the base of his chamber - part of an electrical connector. The dead guy's metal is turning blue after reacting with the foam from the blister! The metal pins were pulled out from the connector. I was going to discard them, but they will be useful as scatter bits, given this is a pillaged wreck.

No, the crashed/ broken one. I did a crashed escape pod with cryotubes  :)

And Rage!, while old, has some excellent Mad Max style post-apocalyptic imagery. In fact, I even used some of it as inspiration for last year's entry too!  ;D

Oh right, I remember that one. Will certainly take a look at Rage! imagery.

In the meantime, I was wondering whether to make this thing embedded in a base - which would be nice, but storage is as ever a problem. There is an appealing alternative (and an easy way out!) - it's floating on my lake gaming mat. And to emphasize that, I am going to add a couple of additional smaller features too, a pylon to which it could be moored, and a raft or barge.

Update. A bit of a disappointing weekend as I was busy, but there is some progress.

The machinery area - the vertical pipes will be cut to size.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhNOjn4P0dLyJTC-oxPEH-MgdUcMP4us-nha2LWOj2I1nDE98AEvNfyhAq0YgAumXcqAwobboFGLFpBNqZ3nhi1SPK4qaDyFmbgmMfiBVoWIznRsY_K3yJeiHDfFBFl5XA49oq2_9WfBqz79I4K5m2E3Aj0YJOrW5AcOiQzIqmpqN0Ox9QiaPylVEg=w640-h426)

There's still more to add here.

Some furniture, finished parts in this case.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh-KdZ5M8ST1iuY4Tnd39uTU2IbHoK4mnzZBNsJYrLSIeQBSHPDd2IySVOCYLyI_C4qaKpNUNgx0mrtGxQ9oxAfizBTyEhBxQ8_Ar_OeGnmemVOS9mSMWuE-82x8ydsqgku-mFkxRTw_ibbSYFgy-qjk2ShXueN1BhAv0yaUOxRiAcZ4hTvLoo_REY=w640-h426)

And the cryogenic chamber itself, redesigned. I found something from the bits intended for last-year's competition which in the end I hadn't used, and changed the concept completely. It's bigger, and, I think, better. These are the bits I will be using.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhKXS4QdfdxawJsEn7kxHPSV8BdDKEZPoXojQhZEqRunmgERjuAWUDDNyUhIL3uClfs2k793rONBBGyyHkfu2Jt2BbOFPhp02-m5WTZJeDMUtu2osJSFSFMVlJrUyNFYYrIqNq3-mcLd7RlWN0hmqyb6Ps_kI_DosZT1eygADm9_DV-qteS86IwmmE=w640-h426)

Amongst others are:
an old aquarium filter box
an old TV antenna cable connector
a couple of electrical connectors
part of an internet connection socket
three bits of reflectors
some transparent, orange sprue
some spare transparent bits from a flying base
a long green thingy which came from a dental clinic
a wheel hub from an old sci-fi model

Somehow, that lot - and the poor, near-dead Praetorian guardsman - have to be bashed together to form the resting place.

Some progress:

More stuff in the engine room:

These pipes will go under the floor:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgnJsfzTWpuUAuYyMMkeJkTFMYOt47vZuQTouU8t_TnjG2An7gxXtnqIVyX_itb9BqYywSA9k1QPzSEip6U0_Ypf7O81kRRGKQNQ2R5bClWGEQINTE4yhh52qxbWuSKxJVclOtKpLuTDXjQ-zrYUtT70p3NJO1kw83uyIdXGUS6cUwaQafoqqlm7-M=w640-h426)

Said floor (prior to the installation of the pipes):

The reflectors will go on the sloping 'bed' surface.

Why is there a bamboo fence (the base of which was sawn off)?

Managed to get some work done at last.
This is starting to feel like seven different projects:
the port side (it's part of a spaceship, so the term fits, I guess)
the starboard side
aft exterior
interior - front open space
interior - cryogenic chamber
interior - machinery space
other bits

Here's a few pics.

Machinery space - not much progress here.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgxrgF5H-ITGsMEkAiYdxiQECUHn9Zgey2zgKNVF7hA8bg3iH9hnFu8LqfsRjkfsjcmQbeJiRQQkGjCqDxxgggpqoc4i2Svhnb2c2IfkB7XMF5PA9Mp8v2gnQnqNw4LXAoELfaR5f63EYm1rAoVZUNniyO2GYTwQ8u5Wugv6sjm5yYjpy8fhlVGVgA=w640-h426)

Front open space - some additional bits.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh46r_e7uUxj5ydWwjHrXLkF9TUgMLnDfCjG6-pOiGFm3T8zSXNSHcnyuKLtlN_AOwi3OPN-3R4vplygV0p3AtJgitSWJh6lhitV6zHQi2q07E-K3bDWdEaazLfLvOI_ARuIn_tLsp4P5dTLNO7xsBfjQBUkEXKo7yUrz7b_PrzBzB7rs9N5YNAPNA=w426-h640)

Starboard side - there's a door and some bits, but still quite empty.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiQ1f3_8SHhZeSnf3aPz9ggeyTJWQTqeGIOn-IfuC0TP32rGeYTmgiSgJMJifexHzpOET_P4_zGuENJF6CgtUqNgicfDnERV9MMERHf6xhEMttaDAKJNg7pQm47G2pe7t7DbeYVRLxERHKOutNLq-0zGxpZKZAT-WFZgcOcZU4Lv7CFJTyPbOih0ac=w640-h426)

Port side - starting to look rather busy.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhh2VurB6Ng21ZfoJgT47UhluH0T_FJumKpxOueIy8qr4qImUaLlios-3v3Gwk-hMuIlYZENxLyeW34IYumv0PFiKymsOQGFXgXj_-6IroX826g9RySp3mAgTLp79vpo2zevdX2gE1GmnjSZax4UJ5sg4_VT0Pim--IYQwWUW0CiSiUK3aV0vYwP7s=w640-h426)

Lots more to do. Just for fun, a pic of the work area (a tiny square surface on home-made trestles).

Thanks. Many of them are - the coin dispenser ox itself; the internet connection panel which looks like part of the bridge of a boat; the green panels; the circuit board; a few of the pipes (not the smaller bore ones); the metal perforated sheet; a TV cable connector and a couple of electrical connectors; the telephone connector components to port and starboard - and more to come.
There's also the spherical cover of a LED, a couple of cat treat container tops, and some bits of sprues (plastic and laser cut).

Thanks guys. Speaking of which (stuff found, that is), I found a mysterious ABS component today, which seems to (again) be part of a vending machine! It will make a brilliant structure for Necromunda-like settings.

Not much of an update today, but here's some bits of wood.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhZz7ZVa5X596N050E_6OoY9rP7Nf5Qxx2cJuL8Ir0P-chX6hg-kqdBK1kddOQuoDuS21wsKWl1E0nP6O5Sp4Ip6mvExL1RXKq1RqFi7y_W_MeRq_kpSLKHjGmKInoW7HeOmGWFvm6357Gmdt6V8FDI1geraGDB4pElxooJlX0-R5bqjWzoP3rCnK0=w640-h426)

These have a lot to do with the next item...
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiFle3XGYNMaE5A6pnaZHYnx8yaI2j10hDSREZwYSoWUa8Fit3oJ3AlB5Ir78__LYYvAFf8ggMudKcLts2rmX3z78Imw8gVYAatvFHtI5kfcc3QoTRYsfyem_11EkGE7ofy_dK4xgsuA94TcSzes_KJ5EeXV7MeZbiTOzUUkkOHG3IT2iZhE1yGS4E=w640-h426)

I decided to make a splash of this, and will be placing the chamber on the 2' x 2' aquarium backdrop. That's where the bits of wood come in: I could have placed it on the backdrop; or embedded it in, digging a hole for it or building up debris; or go for something different. The correct term for these would be keel blocks, although the chamber is part of a spaceship and does not really have a keel. It will be part of something abandoned - for some reason - on keel blocks in a desert. The absurdity appeals to me  :D

Tiny bit of work on the setting for the cryogenic chamber - it's now starting to look like a tiny part of a ship in a wrecking yard (or at least, that's the idea).

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhYaGNdQ5Bu3l_7_kl60gVoy_gjWGQxOzf5G5gWKl7dfLXV2MykTMXjXlvA3owxVuUrabRjpBqUBzPrWMcuQfyGxRGkNGehYJxIzZ2c8E9wWHp-N5E0MeracaDHpJ7hgybe00ppoakj7Wd_LnCvfu_zkwfFV_nzikdHg7Rlj3_x9T5N9XMtYCMApqw=w640-h426)

A piece of rainwater drain broken off the garage by accident (honest!) will become a space ship propulsion tube segment used as a crude shelter.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjT5MuBmfcMXPKT2UiIOMAZ7mtvXAa-OiavIN4aabNyest2oQAgg5OtL89mbSRTgbTCz_tVKTjVTgH669L3k3QU0hOVnd_K8xkjZCQioHgIMn8KJSdCMCG7UzqXeuJDogmutE-ZxQJjwrnHm0UjDiAhN-GP-ItQnyQiX_FY63qKaVuApWNAgQP1Wyk=w640-h426)

Not sure about the Playmobil skip - I am more interested in its potential contents, which could add to the narrative.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgi1NrvdV5sENceD-_GavEbnUEuPuaI-nGmSW1nYrKV8UpEGpXPt014FX48fnaCLQHPCcmo8pHKlDrbEBldpu5RuEf3P5r16wRK26ON9t31SHfg1fQZiC3H8IFMAxcMJ3Lo_DZZsfbzW6bx7nSDbm77oFxx6JFZWNmI22F0A3FUQkkbaw-hV3luEyo=w640-h426)

Here's one of the in-progress accesses to the chamber - I still have to make the steps.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj7mUeZv84uZhkl7h3_3-WssYPHW9MG8f9fKcl9-wMnAI35Vdbtk97pE3T32csyHTeX9srN5K3aXgwG4fLAiOL77qzHjSc3X3Jv9G40MMnKy56t1U67xIJUqDaS7pXnLEFfnLjVoJtl3yJym6AOy0fWcBjFYhx8ZicQvgUQAEb1fP5zZDuNMCeCDz4=w640-h426)

The patterned steel plate at the base of the staircase is regular plasticard with a bit of this stuck on:

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi3GKXnQTt94FUjJ1ONxMQCBS90-3Qo_bFcY8pUVrEngoEC4cM356mRREv4zTVka_wE1yZy0pFTHYaDrYm3dwshnPY-limV0HTkxqpS5yNPj01qFHNqElTlgfS5Uc9QMRn1D3Hk4D79Up7PopUtPHpcSn84SaO4eRoqVe7Cbyaf1NG_H0ieldVcpb8=w640-h426)

I bought this place mat sort of thing to use as wire netting, but it worked this way too.
The Nivea stick is not an indication I have chafed lips, but is something else which will be used.

You can say that again!
Some pics - it's almost done! I still have to finish a ramp and a ladder to access the structure from the base.

The aft control station, and the cryogenic chamber - I sprayed the latter with shadow spray to make it suitable opaque, to appear frozen.

Thanks guys.
But I am not going to make it.
The build is done - I had one tiny item to finish, the steps leading up to the chamber thingy, and completed it today. It's a bit nostalgic as it reminds me a lot of my shipbuilding (1:1 scale) days.

There is no way I will manage to undercoat and paint it by this evening of course - the gale and rain are not helping, obviously - there's actually an out of control tanker threatening to mess up our shoreline, it's that bad. Hopefully they'll get it under control, can't be fun out there.

I will finish this one - I invested too many precious bits which have been lying in wait for years to let it rot.

Honestly, would anyone mind if you turned it in a couple days late? We already extended it anyway.

yep, I wouldn't be able to finish this BSC if there weren't some additional days to build, so take your time

Thanks guys, but I missed the extension and fair's fair. Anyway, work is relentless at the moment, so it's unlikely I could manage anything more than a rush job. But I appreciate it.
Also, having seen the entries, the competition is quite tough to beat!  :D :D :D

I would have no objections, but be honest Vanalack
you don't want a prime number of entrants.  lol lol

Exactly  lol
I did start painting it, however, and at the speed I am going, if voting were to wait for me it would be in March all right, 2023 though.
I started with the cryogenic chamber itself, and that's nearly done; the poor frozen lad is next. Since the main component used is part of a vending machine, I also started painting a vending machine (28 mm scale) to include it in the interior of the thing. This was more fun than I thought it would be. Still not one yet, so no pics for now. I do intend to finish this, so I will continue updating this thread slooooooowly.

Did you get it finished? Of course, I could hunt through the threads and see if you started a new one. It is looking great, and I really like the concept.

Construction is finished, the model is undercoated, and one single component which I left off to paint in a little more detail is done - that's all, I'm afraid. Still on top of the painting table, so there's hope...
