So my entry will be Vietnam based. As I wanted to start a small firebase for my Vietnam war gaming, I thought I would just start with the accomodation part of the base and enter that here .
I will probably build some fireteam bunkers and tents or a kitchen bunker/tent or something simmilar along this line.
Sketches to follow
-
Here are some pictures I will take as inspiration:
-
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
-
Good Idea Tom.
I was thinking of doing something like that, but you beat me to it. lol
-
Should fit well with your existing project :)
I was thinking of doing something like that, but you beat me to it. lol
You could always build it sat on a hill...I mean you’ve already proven you can build the hill, so the rest should be a doddle :D
-
This will be good, looking forward to seeing your build 8)
-
I will use some 3D printed sandbags. Individual ones and finished parts of walls etc on a slightly raised terrain piece to be able to do the underground parts as well. So lets start the printer!!
-
A little bit more is done . I started printig Sandbags , boxes , oildrums etc.
-
Here you can see the inspiration of my "firebase". Its from a series of novels about a fictious Capt. Gerber and his special forces unit. The series is called "Vietnam ground zero".
The other scetch is the first draft of the camp I will build . I will start with two team bunkers and a HQ/como bunker. Surrounded with threnches MG emplacements and a mortar pit. It might get bigger with time but I think not for the contest.
-
I decided to build the bunkers first and integrate them into the bigger terrain pieces later. Makes it easier to handle.
here is the beginning of the first team bunker . The Como/HQ bunker , second team bunker and mortar pit with ammo bunker will follow.
The roof can be lifted off for interior access.
-
Ooh that's done nicely! :)
-
That looks good Tom. :)
-
Thanks
-
Excellent progress. This will be a great board to fight over.
-
That looks very good and I agree with marianas_gamer. I am not an expert on Vietnam but your build already reminds me of the scene in the film Platoon when the HQ bunker is destroyed. I imagine a game on your board could get rather frantic once the perimeter is breached!
-
Here are some more pictures in no particular order. The main bunkers are all build now. Next step will be putting them down on the main firebase boards.
-
Impressive - :o
I will have to up my game lol lol
-
You sure do that ;)
-
You are cranking along at an incredible rate!
-
So did some more work over the last weekend. I build the remaining firebase. These are two rather large bases . It would be possible to insert a third one in the middle later with a bird landing zone or a watchtower. But that will be done after the contest. For the contest it will be the two bases in the pictures.
-
I will add more DAS sandbags and some more ground texture next
-
that looks very good - well done. :-*
-
Very nice :-*
-
Very impressive.
-
Even more progress. I added some gravel and lots of DAS sandbags. Next will be adding small pieces like empty ammo boxes, smoke grenades meal containers c ration boxes etc. Last will be outer defences like wire, Claymores etc.
-
That is fantastic already.
-
Wow these are looking fantastic 8) 8) 8)
-
Thanks guys! More pictures soon.
-
another update.
I applied a basecoat of acrylic paint mixed with pva to fix the gravel more firmly to the boards. The I added some little scenery pieces mainly resin cast by myself. open boxes , c ration boxes, containers for warm food ( is there a name for these things?) and a 50 cal for the entrance of the firebase. The cans of the c rations were done with evergreen dowel. The smoke grenades are 3d printed.
-
Looking damn fine 8)
-
So here are the last pictures before starting to paint the thing. Basecoat of black Gesso is applied . More pictures during the competition. For now thats it
-
Fantastic! I look forward to seeing the final photos.
-
Looks brilliant - and already finished too! 8)
I'm ages behind!
-
I had to finish it early as I will be away from home next week, so can#t do anymore work until the end of February.
-
Looking good, but the chopper that the pictures
were taken from is coming in at an unusual angle. lol
-
That is true indeed. I have a new phone ands somehow the alignment of the pictures was wrong. So here is another picture hopefully without a stoned pilot ;)
-
and he did it again :( On my computer the picture is correct and not upside down! whats wrong here? Can anyone help, please?
-
Looks fantastic, can’t wait to see the painted pictures 8) 8)
-
Look pilot! If the sky is green & the earth blue...
YOU'RE UPSIDE DOWN !!!!

Well I didn't even make it to the first round... . :D
All the entries this year were grand, and this is grand, very reminiscent of the scenery in the film Dien Bien Phu, which obviously has a similar setting. It's also a very practical bit of scenery too. Thanks for posting the additional pics. 8) 8)
-
I really like the texture of the ground work- it looks like freshly dug ground with a nice mix of aggregate.

Flattery! :D
-
Thanks gents!!
Will post some more pictures with a more lived in vibe in the future.
-
Looks great :)
I always enjoy seeing the additional pics, the 1000x1000 allowed by the contest never seems to do justice :)
-
Looks very war-worn and realistic. Great job! One of these days, I will get into Vietnam gaming. Your builds certainly tempt me...
