Tannhäuser in the Venusberg
or
The LPL Entry that Never Was

Back in 2018 I entered the Lead Painter's League, and for a long time before that had been toying with the idea of a Tannhäuser-themed entry. You know, the German folk tale about a knight who discovers the goddess Venus living under a hill, that was later a Wagner opera. So I bought all the stuff I needed, and fully intended for it to be one of my entries. Unfortunately, what with the ever-increasing time-crunch in the LPL, it proved to be just too much work to get done in the time, and I had to scrap it, replacing it with another entry, one that was easier finish before the deadline. Some old Game of Thrones crap or something, I think it was.
Much more recently, I realised I still had all the stuff, so why not paint it up, just for fun? So that's what I did, and here it is, a belated entry to the 2018 LPL. :)
The idea was to replicate one of those Pre-Raphaelite Venuses, and I found what felt like the perfect figure, a larger scale one from Brother Vinni.
You know, this type of thing...

As it is Venus she ought to be holding an apple I guess, but what the hell, couldn't be bothered with trying to change that.
In the end I made a couple of Tannhäusers, wasn't sure which would work best until I tried them out...

The standing one is a Crusader Miniatures Teutonic Knight. I can't remember who makes the kneeling one, but he's been given a Crusader Minis head. Turns out Tannhäuser was a real bloke, and that is his actual coat of arms. I was pretty lucky it was something so easy to paint. :)

The nymphs (is that the right word?) are from Hasslefree Minis.

Never thought you'd find Bob Hope in a thread about German folkore and Wagner, did ya?
