28mm scale and other scales...
Will also be sculpting other Historical miniatures in Different scales.
I have included a Calpe Prussian and a Front Rank Austrian i believe , to show comparison's in scale/size
I will be adding updates to this post as things progress...
-
They are awesome - full of character 👏👏👏
-
Thanks Ian ! much appreciated.
-
Count me as impressed.
-
Thanks OB !
-
I have much admiration for those that can sculpt and bring such character and life to figures - these are lovely.
-
Thanks Norm! That's nice of you to say...
-
Great work! I admire your sculpting ability, you have made faces that bring the figures to life.
-
Thanks much Grumpy Gnome ! That's good to hear...
-
Those are class, what’s the plan or just for cos you can( and may I say better than some commercial folk)
-
I normally sculpt fantasy and sci-fi and thought i would have a go at breaking in to the Historical side of things, as for the plan, at this stage I'll crack on with sculpting these and others and see where it goes Roo... Thanks, that is a massive compliment !
-
Bit more progress...
-
Looking fantastic!
-
Thanks, Much appreciated MaleGriffin !
-
Very natural poses and great faces!
-
Thanks a lot vodkafan !
-
Done more work on the straps and epaulets.
It takes getting used to to keep everything consistent on Napoleonic sculpts.
Hats off to other sculptors that do this all the time (Historical/Napoleonic's etc...
I am trying to decide to either do poses for units or individual sculpts or sets of 2-3 miniatures that would make up a scene of battle...?
What do you think...?
P.s I included a Perry miniature just to show scale/size etc.
-
Still looking good - however the marching figures need to be as per the Perry figure - that’s how the French marched not sloped shoulder ?
-
Thanks Ian, not sure what you mean by sloped shoulder...? I can change the arms, not a problem... You are talking about the 2 marching sculpts in the photo's and not future marching poses?
-
The French marched as per the attached
-
Thanks for the info Ian !
-
Does he look correct now?
Will tidy up more on hands when the putty is cured so i can carve it where i need to.
-
Hi Alan
If you study the picture I posted - the French put their musket in the crook of their arm and their arm across their chest - it was unique to the French I believe because the British marched as per your design
Please feel free to ignore me !
-
Hi Ian,
I won't ignore, I appreciate your input and advice... I want to get it right so I'll have another pop at it tomorrow.
It's either right or it's not and it's not..
-
Arm change to the correct position ( I hope! :D )
-
Your sculpting is coming along great Alan.
I think most companies that do historical figures would would have one head done with head gear and blank face.Same for the back packs and such items which repeat on the figures. Then get them moulded and cast up to use on different body types/poses.Saves having to do lots of the same thing over and over. The heads could then be finished with what ever facial hair and such as needed.
-
manic _miner Thanks ! much appreciated.
That had crossed my mind and is a very sensible idea for sure, but at the moment i don't really have any plans for these so just gonna sculpt a selection of poses as i am just having fun for now as i am not really in to running a company and doing all that side of things as sculpting is enough for me.
If any situation or circumstances arise that i was doing a commission for multiple units then i would need to go down that route, does that all make sense...?
-
That’s perfect - great work Alan - now if you could make him in 40mm I’d be really happy 😁
-
Thanks Ian! and thanks for the help and the kick up the backside! ;)
40mm ? I i could make his neck longer...?
You don't really see much 40mm about.
-
those look fab
out of interest where do did you get the napoleonic muskets from?
-
Thanks Kikuchiyo !
I sculpted the musket and had a mold made and got some cast in metal....
-
they look great, was hoping there was a site somewhere that offered nap firearms
It's definately an untapped market whether cast in metal or resin
-
Kikuchiyo Thanks!
I am not aware of anywhere that sells separate Nap weapons etc
I would guess that it is most likely someone somewhere sells 28mm accessories and may have muskets of sorts but you'd likely be restricted to personal use only...
-
The Character figures idea with just a few in a set is certainly a viable idea- it has worked great for Captain Blood. Whether for dioramas or skirmish gamers or just to add a few different figures into a unit.
-
Yeah i totally agree vodkafan.
Yeah i like the idea of Character figures, no limits i reckon with how much you could do...
Not heard of Captain Blood.

https://www.bloodyminiatures.co.uk/
He is a member of this great forum. Started his miniature range last year.
-
vodkafan OK I'll check him out. Thanks!
-
The first sculpt finished.
More on the way...
-
Excellent sculpting Mr Maguire :o
-
Why thank you Mr Vodkafan :)
-
Another French Nap finished...
-
Wondering if the Nap sculpts need blanket rolls above their back packs...?
-
I always thought the thing rolled on top of the pack was the greatcoat (which they are wearing) but I could be wrong...
-
I always thought the thing rolled on top of the pack was the greatcoat (which they are wearing) but I could be wrong...
I think it was but would imagine in winter they would use the slot for a blanket too
-
Vodkafan : I was thinking the same thing but then sure i seen some wearing great coats and some type of blanket roll on the back...?
-
Kikuchiyo : Yes that would make sense for sure.
-
A couple of Naps, W.i.p sculpt.
A Drummer, he will will be holding drum sticks and resting his hand on his Drum and in his right hand will be holding his Sabre. I think it's called a sabre :D
One loading his musket or putting the powder in... once the body and head is done i will adjust the wire for the arms in to the correct pose...
-
Such a tease...if they are never going to be for sale commercially :(
-
Never say never Vodkafan ! somebody might pick them up :)
-
Progress so far on the French Napoleonic sculpts, 4 done so far, finished number 4 today.
One more to do, the French Drummer and see what to sculpt next...
Indian Mutiny had crossed my mind. Just getting the feel of sculpting uniforms etc...
-
Looking to sculpt some Indian mutiny however the only uniform reference i can find seems to be of the front of the uniform...? none of the back, Any help is very welcome. Thanks...
-
Still working on 28mm scale sculpts and thought i would try a 40mm scale Napoleonic. Here he is next to one of the 28mm scale sculpts.
-
I'd love to see your take on a French Silver Bayonet Unit
-
Kikuchiyo .....
What are the silver Bayonet Unit ...?
-
Silver Bayonet is a Napoleonic Gothic Horror tabletop game
Less uniform or unit structure than wargaming
It's all about the characters and your sculpts have it in spades
-
Kikuchiyo ... Thanks....
Sounds cool .
When you say less uniform, so how do you identify different nationality's ?
So you'd have to create different characters ? from different countries etc ?
-
There's more info on the gothic subforum but bacially its a small unit gothic narative game
You pick a country and get up to 8 in your unit, aside for the gothic hunters, occultists etc.
you could have a sapper, infantryman, grenadier, guard, cavalryman on horse or foot for example
but when I say it's more about character than uniform(ity) there is less requirement for the models to be exactly historically acurate
here is the start of my British unit for example
-
Kikuchiyo ...
Sounds a lot more relaxed than sculpting historically accurate miniatures.
I will have a think and see what i can come up with.
Can you add your own kit etc...? or is there a line you don't cross so they don't look silly...?
I guess i could start with a french grenadier, just wondering what pose and kit etc...
Would they be best suited in action poses etc...?
Your minis look cool, liking the sapper!
You mean the gothic sub forum on Lead adventure...?
-
Your minis look cool, liking the sapper!
You mean the gothic sub forum on Lead adventure...?
Thanks and Yep :D
Pose wise think rough and ready
no lines outside of period gear as far as I can tell, if you check out the range from northstar you''ll get some idea of what the lines are
-
OK cool :)
I can't seem to find the sub forum...?
OK i will check them out.
French grenadier vampire hunter ...?
-
plenty of threads here

-
Thanks Kikuchiyo !
-
Yes, your sculpts do indeed have a lot character. Great faces, really excellent sculpting that displays the personality of the miniature.
The Silver Bayonet might be a way to help you express your artistic ability with its focus on individuality.
-
Grumpy Gnome :
Thank you.
Yes, I have been browsing gothic to get some ideas for characters and 18th century clothing.
-
Working on some sculpts which hopefully might suit The Silver Bayonet game...
3 Sculpts so far... 1 French and 2 British.
Any thoughts on what to put or pose with regards to the unfinished arms etc...?
Slightly lost with what characters to do, Sculpting them is not a problem...
Thanks...
-
Alan, as well as Silver Bayonet you might look at something like the Two Fat Lardies Sharpe Practice 2 which makes more use of individual characters/leaders. Where do you plan to sell these ?
-
@ SJWi
Thanks for that, I will check it out.
I don't have any plans as yet, I started sculpting Historical to see how i did and try something new/different as i normally sculpt fantasy and sci fi.
Started with Napoleonic if you look back to the very beginning of this topic and then i was going to do some Indian mutiny and got distracted with Silver Bayonet as one of the members mentioned it and here is where i am at right now...
I may just sell them as i sculpt them.
-
Absolutely fantastic! I particularly love the faces! I would love to be able to purchase them for Silver Bayonet (and Sharp Practice!)
-
@ MaleGriffin
Thank you. Much appreciated.
No plans as whats happening with them as yet ! but i will update as soon as anything changes...
-
More work on some of the sculpts.
New Sculpt! Vampire Lady, gave her fangs which i am kinda OK with so far...
Both sculpts are W.I.Ps
-
More progress on the sculpts...
-
A British sculpt, W.i.p
-
Another W.i.p
-
Sculpts so far, "Silver Bayonet" some more or less done and some still W.I.Ps
-
VERY COOL
-
All Units are led by an Officer (equipped as you like) who can recruit up to 7 other soldiers for his elite monster hunting Unit.
For the French you can include any of the following:
Artillerist - Hand Weapon and Pistol
Doctor - Hand Weapon and Pistol
Grenadier - Musket
Guard - Musket
Heavy Cavalryman - Hand Weapon and Pistol, wears a Breastplate
Infantryman - Musket
Junior Officer - Hand Weapon or Fencing Weapon and 2 Pistols
Light Cavalryman - Hand Weapon and Pistol
Marine - Musket
Native Scout - Musket or Heavy Weapon
Occultist - Hand Weapon
Sailor - Hand Weapon and Pistol
Sapper - Musket and Heavy Weapon
Supernatural Investigator - Fencing Weapon and 2 Pistol or Heavy Weapon and Pistol
Veteran Hunter - your choice of weapons
Vivandiere - Heavy Weapon
-
those are fantastic :-*
-
Thanks Kikuchiyo ! :)
-
Thanks Bloggard ! :)
-
Thanks for the info Thargor ! That will help a lot.
Thanks for taking the time to type it all out :)
This info only applies to the French ???
I kinda winged it when i sculpted these 5 sculpts as did not have this type of info so not sure if they will be suitable for The Silver Bayonet...Although the Lady vampire would work ok...
-
Each Nation has access to unique types of Soldier - for example the British can't take a Guard or a Vivandiere, but can take a Highlander and a Rifleman, Russians can have a Champion of Faith, Irregular and a Werebear, but can't have Guard, Native Scout, Occultist or Vivandiere.
-
@ Thargor
Thanks for the info!
I may call on you for info if i need it if That's OK ...?
-
No problem at all...happy to help.
-
@Thargor
Thank you!
