Title: Boats for the Roman Rhine Fleet
Post by: Triarius on January 23, 2022, 09:42:17 PM
Hello all,

I'm looking for suggestions for boats for the Roman Rhine fleet suitable for 28mm miniatures, ideally able to carry troops based on 40 X 40mm bases.

Thanks for the help!

It's been nearly twenty five years since I made a 3ft display of a river patrol boat.
But your best bet for a reconstruction is the Maritime Museum in Mainz .
If no one else comes up with a better source/Idea's.I've promised to do a tutorial on longships from cereal packet card. Since the Rhine river patrol boats are similar ( in gaming model construction terms) . I can add one to the tutorial.  Without rooting for old plans I seem to remember them being roughly 5ft- 8ft  wide depending on the boat .I think there's a couple a little wider. So 40mm x 40mm is pushing it. But it's possible with a little tweaking to make one visually similar to the Mainz reconstruction.

Acording to some German info, mostly used on the Rhine were the Navis Lusoria, a small rowed type of boat
The first picture is from the Roman museum in Mainz, the second one a replica made by the Univesity of Regensburg (the shields on the last one are with the colours of the sponsor-a brewery)

That Navis Lusoria is the one I would like a 28mm model of. To me it seems the type that would be used on waterways everywhere as the Romans did tend to standardise things wherever they were.

A tutorial like on making something out of cereal boxes would be awesome!

Thanks for the images! They are really quite narrow aren't they!
