Title: Into the Ash Wastes
Post by: Knight-Captain Tyr on January 26, 2022, 11:28:39 AM
For a while I've meant to try my hand at a far-future band of mercenaries or scavengers, taking inspiration from Dune, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Mad Max, Destiny and other examples of gritty sci-fi. So, last night, after discussing Necromunda with some friends, inspiration struck and I made a mercenary/outlaw type who looks like he's been spending too much time in the Ash Wastes of some far distant backwater planet. As ever with my projects, they tend to exist in a 'lore' space in my head slightly disconnected from GW/other established universes, so I wanted something which looked unique but could fit in recognisably in mainstream games.

I've also been inspired a lot by the artwork of Craig Mullins, whose concept art and sketches have been an influence since I was a kid. Here are some examples of what specifically motivated me to get kitbashing for this project:

And last night I sat down to throw together this chap. I tried to get a slight Mandalorian vibe to him - tooled out with a long rifle of unfamiliar design, a heavy pistol (slightly based off the Blade Runner 2049 pistol wielded by K), a lighter sidearm strapped to his thigh and a combat knife.

That shoulder-slung rifle took an hour to kitbash!

Everything here is from Anvil Industries with a single exception - see if you can spot it :)

Had some fun with the next of the Ash Wasters. A young sniper, using a bolt-action sniper rifle from days long passed. Playing around with barbed wire for basing interest - going to keep them fairly sparse befitting the Ash Wastes, but I'll find some tiny tufts of rad-resistant grass to decorate with.

The extra piece looks to be one of the Battlefleet Gothic antennas you’ve used under the barrel of that shotgun :)

Lovely work so far my man!

Pretty cool interpretations!

The ash wastes were always a bit of a mystical thing in Necromunda; people were known to venture into them, most never returned, but there were those that eeked out an existence out there.

Best depiction I read was in Dan Abnett's Last Chancers, where the unit is forced to walk from one hive to the next.

Keep it up; I'd love to see where you'll take this project...  :)
