Title: 16th Century Highland clans help
Post by: Inkpaduta on January 29, 2022, 12:18:58 AM
Wanting to do Clan warfare, raids and feuds ect. Doing it in 28mm.
Looking for figures that have lochabers, two handed swords, regular swords
and early style pistols and muskets. What companies would you suggest I look
at for them?

Dunno of anything highland specific for the 16th C but there are plenty of Border Reiver ranges for the lowlands. Perry do some Irish gallowglass and hand gunners suitable for the 16th C which might be the source of some conversion pieces.

The earliest, specifically highlander, 28mm range that I can think of are the Eureka Highlanders in their ECW lineup so 17th C not 16th. No two handed swords but bows, lochaber axes etc.

I think Antediluvian are a good look as they do quite a few gallowglass in mail and aketons who probably fit that period of highlander.

They’re great sculpts in my opinion.

Pete’s flags are planning to bring out some mid 16th century highlanders.
He’s already released the first 4 packs of lowland Pike and command and has commissioned highlanders but no news yet on release dates, I guess it depends on how well he recoups his costs on the initial figures.

The range is sold via E bay. You can see an example of the highlanders on his Italian wars blogspot. The figures are scripted ny Nick Collier who does The Assault Group figures and the ones I have match in with the Antedeuvian figures others have mentioned.

The other manufacturers not mentioned so far mentioned are Reiver   Castings and Dixon who both  do a  ranges of Scots for  Flodden.

Good luck with your project and I hope this helps

Interesting period to pick. You could work back from the 17th century in which case Warlord have a fabulous range of highlanders. Also worth looking at the venerable Foundry range that mix in very nicely.

Also worth considering the Gallowglass from the 16th century Irish ranges. Ulster and Scottish isles and northwest coast has close cultural ties in this period. Antediluvian have some of the finest figs anywhere for this.

One of my “someday” projects is to do James the fifth’s (6th?) attempt at planting lowland settlers in Lewis. A Fife based gentleman’s adventuring society was formed and tried to carve out estates around Stornaway leading to conflict with with the locals and if I remember right the first use of large scale musketry in the Isles. Been a while and can’t remember all the details but fascinating stuff
