Title: First Game of Five Parsecs from Home
Post by: AdamPHayes on February 06, 2022, 04:34:21 PM
I tried out Five Parsecs from Home as a way to create a small scenario for first time SF wargamers.

It worked quite nicely, simple rules that are soon understood and remembered, with little referring to the book or a QRS (when I make one...) required.

I have just been reading the 5PFH rule book so it is great to read other people's experiences with the rules.

The games seem to be nice and quick. My crew rolled up a lot of long range weapons luckily and so have always managed to get the first shots off unopposed and started to whittle down their opponents. Some enemies are quite tough to take down - eg Hulkers - but even the others can roll high and put one of your guys out of the battle.

There seems to be lots of variation each game with all the different enemy weapons possible, from scrap pistol to military rifles and the nasty plasma rifle. Also unique characters have turned up a couple of times to make things more interesting. There have been a number of different conditions for the battle - dim lighting/fog etc giving reduced range, that sort of thing. And I kept forgetting to roll the random events in the battle so you did well to remember on your first run through.

Excellent campaign system though which means I will keep on coming back to see how my crew are doing. I recommend it to anybody.

Where can I find the rules? I tried wargame vault but they only had the supplement.

There's also a hardcover from Modiphius.

If you get the hard cover from Modiphius, or show them proof you've bought it from another retailer, they send you the PDF as a free bonus. I got mine having got the book from Northstar. Glad I got a physical copy - it's much easier finding relevant tables than flicking backwards and forwards on a device.

Thanks for the report! Looks like it was a good game. Enough to tempt the youngsters into dark sci fi corners?

Indeed. Luckily it worked on a number of levels, the main one being it is also their Dad's nickname. (Yes, for exactly the reason you're thinking... :o)
