Post by: manic _miner on February 09, 2022, 03:40:07 PM
Warlord Games have just posted info on the up-coming Slaine miniatures game and sets of miniatures that will be coming out for it.

Balor looks amazing riding his stag.

Always loved the cominc series and great to see a game and miniatures coming-out for it.

Not exactly "rabidly excited", but I'll surely be getting some of the minis at least. I was rather fond of the SD game, and much like with Judge Dredd, the Slaíne comics have grown on me over the years.

Those Fomorians look particularly useful.

Sadly only resin figures, but I guess that is what they'll be doing all their "special interest ranges" in these days.

I’ll be buying everything.

It was you that got me to buy the Dredd game at the Stockton show a few Years back.

They have shown quite a lot of miniatures for this in the video and post about the game.Very nice to see the Cauldron in the video and Elfric looks good too.The Undead types look like they will come in handy for other games too.

The huts in the starter game look okay. Not sure if you get the paper already torn for the rooves or you have to do it yourself ;).

And I :)
Hopefully they’ll match up with my Lucid Eye miniatures  :)

Finally. A staffer teased me about this years ago when I emailed them about blank stat cards for SD. I said that there should be a fantasy analogue to it, and it looks like it's no longer a tease!

There were some pictures of the miniatures shown from the open-day that they had recently.

Looking forward to seeing what else will be coming-out.

I like the look of the miniatures a lot and they've certainly captured the Glenn Fabry and Simon Bisley vibes, which is great. Good to see the Skull Swords and Fomorians so well represented. A tiny quibble was that Slough Feg looks way too beefy, but that really is a tiny quibble. There was a metal mini from another company that did a Slough Feg-esque (without naming it as such, obviously) in the classic pose - does anyone remember who they were?

This one?

Now available again from Northstar, I think it was originally released by Harlequin.

No, similar, but it was stood straight upright holding the skull out at right angles. Thanks for searching though.

I thought it was Gamezone that did the figure you're talking about Cubs, I remember it from ages ago, but it doesn't seem to be on their website - I may of course be wrong.

I really like the look of these, and the Drune soldiers look like they would fit well with the single one that Foundry produced which is pretty cool as he's really tall!

EDIT: Ah, I was right, its currently listed as Out of Stock on Hasslefree's site:

https://hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=gamezone-%252d-chaos-sorcerer-ii~gz%252d01%252d11&category=artemis-blacks~gamezone-chaos

But seems to have disappeared from Gamezone's altogether. Looks like its OOP. Warlord could have put the C&Ds out like they did when they took on the Dr Who franchise, which meant Heresy and Crooked Dice had to retire several of their "not" figures.

This version was by Fantasy Forge. The company before Harlequin.

Looking at the Lost Mini's wiki they do have them down as Harlequin. The markings under the base are Fantasy Forge from what i remember though.Picked some of the range up in blister packs many Years ago. There is also another Warlord type and the Shaman is very much like the one shown in the Warlord video.

Still got this figure and the others from the range.

Gamezone did do another similar version of him too.

depending on size of figures in this new range, would have thought there's good stuff in the Celtos range (still available from Brigade Games UK) for this.

I don't know about his 'classic' pose, but I immediately thought of this one from the Hordes Circle Orboros line by Privateer Press:

They're all good and all so very similar - variations on the theme obviously. I think it's the Gamezone one that's most familiar to me.

I was in, but all this talk about the lousy material has me hesitant. I did break out all my stashed away Celtos and my GameZone Feg though!

Not sure what the material is like but it is Slaine ;).

We might not get another chance of getting anything like this in the future. From what they have shown so far it will be off to a very good start. Not long to go now until the pre-order goes live at 3 pm.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind resin all that much (although I still prefer metal), but I am a bit wary of "Warlord Resin" in that I had an item presumably made from it softening a plastic base I attached it to. Also got burned a couple of times last year with 3d-printed resin items (unrelated, obviously) so may be unduly skeptical.

I got the ex-Fantasy Forge Celts bundle when Northstar re-released those, got almost all of the Foundry Slaíne minis before they were discontinued and will very likely get some of these new minis (and possibly the boxed game), but I'll wait how this resin behaves for a couple of months before investing more heavily into it.

Overall I like the minis...even though one of the Earth Tribe warriors looks to be punching himself in the nuts...or maybe it's just the angle the photo was shot in. I'd definitely watch a battle report.

Mostly though it just makes me wish Brigade would do something with Celtos.

They look interesting but would have preferred metal miniatures although I like the look and design of the miniatures.

Bit expensive too looking at the prices of the miniatures but most likely available online at -20%

Another alternative source of similar miniatures are these from Alternative Armies

Some figs are pretty cool, some not so but I'll try and see if my FLGS can preorder the all-in launch bundle. Saves additional costs S/H. customs and VAT charges because, well, in theory DDP should work but yeah, real world experiences say something different. Also, they choose the courier and if you're unlucky UPS will charge an additional 13-15 euro handling fee...

Shame it's resin... don't mind it for larger minis and scenery type stuff but I've broken too many (of the few I have) to really jump on this. Shame as they look great. Celtos minis from Brigade still rock though and I do have the few old Foundry ones.

@Deothar, I need that Hordes mini though!

Of course, if we can give Nick enough nudges, Northstar might just re-release these lovely babies again. There's 'perfect' and then there's 'damn perfect'.

They are very nice figures sculpted by Roy Eastland.Wish he was still sculpting instead of Teaching. The shield designs are nice on the Celts.

Is Slaine more of a UK thing? The figures would have some potential usefulness for those who may never have heard of Slaine, but it looks as though Warlord may be aiming at the UK market.

More of a 2000 AD thing,if you’re a fan of Judge Dredd,Rogue Trooper or Nemesis et cetera chances are you’re a fan Slaine :)

2000 AD comic being a UK publication for many years now.Has loads of different main characters/story lines and such.
So far Warlord have done two games based of the comics.Strontium Dog and Judge Dredd.Slaine will be the third and one which i have been looking forward to for so many Years now.
If you have never read any of the stories they are highly recommended and will give you idea's for other games too.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sl%C3%A1ine_(comics)

There have been some great artists work on the stories over the years.

Is Slaine more of a UK thing?

Slaine (I think most of us pronounce it 'slain', but I seem to remember the Gaelic pronunciation should be something like 'slawnye') first appeared in 2000AD back in the 80's and was a unique story from the off, being set in the far past, in an undetermined prehistoric 'Time of Legends' in the lands that would later separate into Ireland, Britain and western France. All the other stories in 2000AD were futuristic sci-fi and there was this weird 'sword and sorcery' thing popping up, based loosely around 'Celtic' mythologies but with some wonderful original storylines built in. As Manic Miner says, they are thoroughly recommended, especially if you go through them in chronological order. There have been lots of different artists who worked on Slaine over the years, all of them creating unique flavours, and everyone will have their own taste as to which ones they like best - I won't be tempted to steer the conversation into that arena, because that's a thread in its own right, and one that must surely flame into open war!

Wise words! Still, I was most pleasantly surprised in how some artists' styles, which I found and still find rather unsuited to Judge Dredd, took on a whole new level with Sláine, most notably Belardinelli and McMahon. Works absolutely superb in this mythic fantasy genre.
