I've painted the odd few Burrows and Badgers Miniatures over the past 18 months and received a bumper crop of them as one of my Christmas presents from my wife.
I have toyed with the idea of buying the rulebook too but already have quite a few small party skirmish games that I play with friends, and really I was looking for something with more of a few versus many vibe for playing solo anyway.
I also wanted something a bit less magic orientated than Frostgrave ( I already play this and have a few warbands) but with hefty chunk of suspending disbelief to allow for a world populated by anthropomorphic animals.
So off I went to look at Rangers of Shadow Deep, the much loved solo game by the author of Frostgrave, as the starting basis of my world.
The biggest hurdle I could see was that all the enemies I needed had to be based in the same animal populated world so I spent some time looking for how I could provide alternatives.
I think I've pretty much cracked using various Skaven, giant insects, spiders and grubs - with a bit of green stuff and imagination I reckon I can get a good force of evil together which will compliment the feel of the B and B figures.
Civilians will most likely also be from the Burrows and Badgers although I'm not fully decided on that yet.
Long term plans for these miniatures is to expand them into other solo games, especially the Perilous Dark scenarios of Frostgrave and Sellswords and Spellslingers.
I will be painting a large band of creatures, some will be selected for my initial party into the Shadow Deep, others held in reserve as my forces lose members or to make up parties for other adventures in the same universe.

Great start to your warband's adventures in the Shadow Deep.
-
For the white rat with red eyes, you might want to consider getting some pink paint to dot the eye with, that tends to work really well for red eyes in making them look less flat there.
But I really like the looks of it.

It does look a bit flat in that pic, here's a close up of his face which I think shows it better. Will definitely try red eye with a pink pupil next time to see how it goes.

Yeah, that looks a lot better.
The first pick just reminded me of how hard it was to do the eyes for some of Reaper's Mouslings
For red eyes, I've found using a dark red and a more mid tone pink (specifically Reapers Gory Red and Breast Cancer Awareness Pink), adding a bit of white to the pink (about 50/50) for a further dot is great for a glowing red eye, with the red and pink being carefully worked in when thinned extremely far around the edges.

Brilliant painting mate! You really bring the figures to life.
-
Thank you.
This project is going to be very slow as I'm keen to keep everything in the animal world and will be preparing for a scenario then playing it, one at a time.
Have 2 more animals to paint for the starting warband I've built and will be building/painting alternatives for Giant Rats and Zombies for the first mission.
-
Welp, my wife wants some now lol
Well done!
-
They are very cute do like the close-up showing the red-eye.
-
Very nice! Love your idea
-
Cheers guys.
NG, it just shows she has good taste.
-
So this river has forked slightly as I have now purchased the Burrows and Badgers book; it is wholly possible that some characters who appear here may wonder off into different rulesets at different times.
-
Reading the Rangers book suggested that my collection of 10 small fir trees might not be enough for some of the scenarios so I took at chance on a pack of 30 trees for £10.99 delivered from Amazon.
It's taken me about 6 hours in total to complete them and I think they look pretty good.
They do need sealing to stop the foliage dropping off and they don't come with the root sections as shown in the pics so took a bit longer to fix into place.
Pics show them on my new grass mat from Battle Systems - it's ok but I wish I spent a tenner more on a better one. This one is thin which I don't mind but won't lie flat which I do.
It arrived really tightly rolled and despite hanging in a steam room, weighting down flat and ironing for hours on end it still has a ripple effect which can leave figures and lighter terrain tipping sideways.
I think I'll just buy a better mat at some point and cut this one up to use as forested areas with a few trees on.

They look very good for the price. What did you use as a sealant to stop the foliage from dropping off?

Ages ago I accidentally ordered 2 tins of Humbrol spray gloss varnish instead of matt.
I tested it out on one tree and it looked fine so pretty much a can and a half went on these and it's done a really good job, hardly any foliage loss now.

Baron Greenback had his Nero. ;)
For the younger readers, replace the above comment with "Caterpie- I CHOOSE YOU!" :D
Great concept and execution, though now I want to see beetles as their rivals' hounds for some reason.

I really like the way that you have painted those caterpilars.

Thank you chaps.
I got both references Mr Grout - I'm old enough for the first and my kids were avid Pokemon fans.
There will be more insects both friend and foe before this project is done.

Quite a productive days yesterday between the Six Nations matches.
Finished off three Mouse City Guards and based them this morning.
The first scenario of ROSD requires giant rats, but my giant rats are the people; I have repurposed my Manaworms from Frostgrave to be giant centipedes in ROSD.

gosh, yes - those caterpillars really are gribbley ...
nice work on the B&B figures.

Do you leave the centipedes in their normal rubbery state, or is there something you apply to them to keep them still?

Left them as is, they are more plastic than rubber, obviously chopped some up for those bursting out of the ground and painted eyes black.

Genius idea to use these figures for Rangers of Shadow Deep. Must do the same.

Still working through the terrain and bestiary for Rangers, onto the Infected Trees now.
Rather than cobwebbed trees and cocoons I've made 10 spider holes for the burrowing spiders I've painted. Bit of a cheat but made things easier.
Will paint a couple of heroes and/or civilians next.

The Burrows and Badgers miniatures flatter my painting skills, the sculptor is also an accomplished painter and he definitely knows what painters need when he's making these figures.
The centipedes and the spider holes are genius!
I like to do stuff on the cheap where possible.

Thank you. The spiders look a bit more colourful on the pictures, especially when viewed on mobile phone.

Didn't sound arrogant to me at all so no worries on that score.
I was intrigued though so trawled through your blog to find them; yours are much more detailed and realistic than mine.
Was a worthwhile visit in many way, your terrain building is amazing.
I may well be copying some of your stuff in the near future.

I have to say having been someone who's put many an hour into ROSD I really like this concept
-
I'd also been thinking that the B&B minis would be good for ROSD. Great job on your minis and terrain creations.

Thanks chaps.
After nearly 2 months with no painting I decided to get this project back up and running, current plan is to have everything done for the first 10 scenarios by the end of the year.
So I have hacked the legs off my Irregular Miniatures Cave Bugs; the single ones are to be swamp maggots with swamp zombie stats, the swarm is to have barrow worm stats.
Also completed Jack Maclary, a terrier of the Town Guard.
I still have rubbish photo skills, I'm afraid.

What a sad and distant expression Jack is wearing! I have never seen a terrier with a 1,000 yard stare before. I guess if you serve in the Town Watch long enough you end up seeing a few sights you wish you hadn't.
Lovely painting.
-
Wow. That is a really really nicely painted terrier.
-
Great paint job, particularly the face. Lovely work.
-
Agree with all of the above. Plus, those maggots actually look quite terrifying. Good job!
-
You're all very kind, thank you.
I have 15 more figures to finish in order to play the first 10 scenarios; all are purchased but some still need building/kit bashing prior to painting.
Very slow burn this project but I will keep the thread updated.

Hamish Macbeth - Swordsmaster.
So first attempt at tartan which looks fine in hand but not so good when zoomed in - best my old eyes and shaky hands are going to manage I think.
Also speed painted 8 more Plague Monks including a shaman, acolytes and sergeants.
Wasn't sure which pic I liked best so you got both.

They're good. Nice choice of colour palette too.
-
Outstanding brushwork. I must agree. Your use of color is wonderful. It really makes the miniatures pop.
-
Thank you.
Looking forward to getting them on the table.
