Title: Grumpy Gnome’s Twilight ’49 project log
Post by: Grumpy Gnome on March 03, 2022, 03:03:04 PM
So it would seem my latest obsession has become Weird War 2, which is something of a surprise to me.

Now I am trying to figure out how exactly I want to set up my potential mash-up of various influences for a Pulpy, Weird War, post-apoc dieselpunk/atompunk game setting.

If you are curious about this project then this thread is for you.

Here is a blog post going a bit deeper into my ideas.

Suggestions, feedback and advice are all welcome!

Interesting project fella!

I agree clear bases are not for me….I’ve yet to see them look good on a table….they draw your eye worse than a generically textured based figure in my opinion.

Interesting haul of civilian cars you have there?   Are they a German manufacturer ?

Thanks mate!

They are mostly Solido 1/43 scale. There is at least one Corgi civilian truck.

The military vehicles are a mix of 1/50 Solido, 1/48 Tamiya, 1/50 Corgi and 1/43 Atlas/Eaglemoss/etc.

I have been incredibly fortunate with careful bidding on eBay.

Clear bases do not bother me as long as they are really thin. I dislike the thicker clear bases that are more commonly found. I managed to get some really thin but still sturdy ones from a seller in Australia but I just do not fancy transferring so many already based figures onto new clear bases.

There is that too!    I think unless you are going to rpg them into buildings in say a modern setting, then I don’t see the appeal of them tbh.  Each to their own.

I will look out for some of Solido vehicles, thanks.

Do post progress on here, not just your blog ss I rarely follow blogs please?

Nice collection of vehicles good to also see the Mars Mantic stuff lurking among it all. Keep 'em coming.

I read your blog post(s).
Nice collection!

Based on the pictures:
How about Martians invading western Europe in 1946 or late 1945?
After a devastating Martian first strike the western powers assemble a rag-tag strike force to fight the nefarious aliens. Zombies could be human captives infected with a mind control virus by the Martian Science division.

Just my 2 cents.

Digits, German, French and Belgian eBays are full of inexpensive Solido vehicles. Military and civilian, 1/43 and 1/50 scale.

Sgt_T, one of the things I have been mentally wrangling with is that I would prefer to make this one big project but I keep finding myself falling into two categories…

1) Alternative Europe in the late 40’s where Aliens invade during the War. Dark brooding forests, mountain fortresses, old world charm. The Occult. More Weird War Red Skull vibe. Oh and a retro Twilight 2000 twist.

2) Alternate America in the late 40‘s to early 50’s. Desert wasteland. Lots of Pulpy Americana. And Canadians. Definitely some Canadian element. More Fallout New Vegas vibe. No idea how to effectively introduce European elements in this one.

I know I could combine both in one setting but then it feels like two huge subprojects and I do not know which to do first.

Just as I do with my fantasy project log I will try to put mini updates here every time I do a blog post on this project. And since blogs are not the best platform for conversions, I would encourage discussion of the project here.

I am keen to use Chain of Command as one game for this setting but perhaps not the only one. I have some ideas of a modified Last Days for example to allow for some smaller unit gaming.

As for Alternate Earth or a completely fresh new Dieselpunk or Atompunk setting, both have their appeal.

An Alternate real world setting allows for some shortcuts in world building. The fantastic is grounded in some recognizable reality. But it brings a lot of political and emotional baggage.

A fresh new unique setting avoids a lot of the baggage but is a lot more work and suspension of disbelief is more difficult to achieve.

A first step of this decision is changing symbols on vehicles I have procured. The most problematic are easy enough for me to change but to change all of them, that definitely personalizes them but also damages resale. Not the biggest deal as I tend to avoid buying at full retail price but it is something my money conscious self balks at. And it will be a lot of work to do it well. And it impacts that “real world shorthand”, for both good and bad, I was talking about.

Any input you folks have on this project is greatly appreciated!

Alternative Earth is always good I find. In fact I’ve been working on mine for years( basically an excuse to build WWII ‘planes with my own background). It has become 1/48 Crimson Skies /diesel punk. :)

Very cool Blackwolf. The freedom to explore your imagination is a strong motivator.

That's a nice project!!

I'm working right now in a weird ww2 solo skirmish wargame, I have already written most of the rules and I'm testing them.

The player Will take the role of an allied sergeant with a bunch of soldiers along different scenarios.

In most of the scenarios they Will be ordinary soldiers with ordinary ww2 weapons, although un some cases they Will have powerful weapons or unexpected allies on their side.

They Will face nazis, supernatural entities, high techo weapons, strange cults...

The idea is that the Game can also be played without the supernatural/weird elements as a solo skirmish ww2 Wargame.

I'll keep an eye on your project!

Keep going mate!

Not much progress… but a little…

https://thegrumpygnome.home.blog/2022/07/20/yes-i-am-still-alive/

I am not sure if my Twilight 49 is leaning more Pulp than Weird War now.
