Title: Mary Shelley in the Silver Bayonet (new AAR, page 6)
Post by: Mad Lord Snapcase on March 05, 2022, 01:18:52 PM
I think I read somewhere that someone (the joys of senility, I can't remember anything, nowadays) had already thought of the idea of putting Mary Shelley into the Silver Bayonet. Apologies here for pinching your idea!

No pictures yet, as I am still painting, but this thread will keep track of my progress as I try to assemble a British Silver Bayonet unit. Whilst, painting, I came up with a rather wild back-story, which I post here. I have had to fiddle around with several important dates by a matter of years, so anything that does not sound right is either my intention or my error.

I will probably be playing solo but am still reading through the rule book at present.

So, without further ado...

Major Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
In ‘The Silver Bayonet’

(An acknowledgement that some of this text is taken directly from ‘The Silver Bayonet’ by Joseph A. McCullough). I do hope that is not a problem.

Major Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is ostensibly the second in command of the Much-Piddling Hussars, a Yeomanry regiment raised by the Earl of Snapcase in 1797. Sometimes referred to as ‘The Earl of Snapcase’s Own’. The regiment was comprised of local famers and officered by the landed gentry and nobility. The threat of invasion by Bonaparte and his armies, was considered high and many flocked to the standard raised by Lord Snapcase at Snapcase Hall.

Mary’s mother Mary Wollstonecraft was a feminist activist and had persuaded her husband, William Godwin to buy a commission for the young Mary in the Much-Piddling Hussars. Therefore, Cornet M. W. Godwin was duly entered into the regimental books at the tender age of thirteen, in 1800. She did not, obviously, take up her commission at that point.

As a teenager, Mary’s father encouraged her to undertake an education in many diverse subjects, medicine, politics, archaeology and even the supernatural. She fell in love with Percy Bysshe Shelley and travelled with him in Europe during the early 1800’s. This culminated in a summer spent with her stepsister, Shelley, Lord Byron and John Polidori (who had recorded his study and knowledge of vampires in novelistic form in a book entitled ‘The Vampyre’) on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Their earlier travels in Europe had taken them on a journey along the River Rhine. The party spent some time at Gernsheim and from there visited Castle Frankenstein in the Odenwald. It was reported that Mary and Percy had met and conversed with Doctor Victor Frankenstein at his castle. What they discussed has never been revealed.

A tragedy then occurred in young Mary’s life. Percy Shelley was drowned when a storm sank his sailing boat, whilst he was sailing near Viareggio in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Overcome with sorrow, Mary Shelley returned to England in 1807 and resided with her relatives at Snapcase Hall, Much-Piddling.
Reminded of her commission with the Much-Piddling Hussars, Mary decided to become an active member of the regiment. There was great consternation at first when it was discovered that Cornet M. W. Godwin was, in fact a woman. However, her uncle being the commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Lord Bertram Wilberforce Snapcase, these objections were soon quashed. Mary turned out to be a superb horsewoman, a natural markswoman and very talented with the sabre. As a natural soldier and with the influence of Uncle Bertie, she soon rose to the rank of Major.

Our story begins in 1808, when the Prime Minister, William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland sojourned at Snapcase Hall for an extended visit. Cavendish-Bentinck was fascinated to learn of Major Shelley’s time with Victor Frankenstein and John Polidori and of her own studies in the occult and the supernatural.

After dinner one night, Cavendish-Bentinck reveals to Mary and Lord Snapcase that he has commissioned a secret society called ‘The Silver Bayonet’. He recounts that as the wars of Napoleon ravage Europe, chaos and fear reign and the darkness that once clung to the shadows has been emboldened. Supernatural creatures - vampires, werewolves, ghouls, and worse take advantage of the havoc, striking out at isolated farms, villages, and even military units. Whether they are pursuing some master plan or simply revelling in their newfound freedom is unknown. Most people dismiss reports of these slaughters as the rantings of madmen or the lies of deserters, but a few (including Cavendish-Bentinck) know better…

The Silver Bayonet society is formed of soldiers who have faced and defeated these other-worldly evils. They are divided into small, specialist units and are usually led by a veteran Exploring Officer. These small units search for secret knowledge and weapons that can be used against the forces of evil and fight to eliminate these creatures, wherever they are found. Riflemen, swordsmen, and engineers fight side-by-side with mystics, occultists, and even those few supernatural creatures that can be controlled or reasoned with enough, to make common cause.

Cavendish-Bentinck went on to explain that the other great powers, France, Russia, Spain, Austria and Prussia also have their own, similar units. Sometimes these units work together, but more often than not, they battle with one another, hoping to secure some ancient knowledge or lost treasure that will give their homeland the upper hand in the war that is being fought in the shadows.

In conclusion, over large bumpers of vintage port (delivered by the shaky hand of Old Scrotum, the aged and wrinkled Snapcase family retainer) the Prime Minister reveals that he wants Mary to form and lead one of these small units of the Silver Bayonet. The Prime Minister believes that supernatural agencies are abroad in the vicinity and with Mary’s natural military prowess and her associations with Frankenstein and Polidori, she is the ideal candidate to form an elite group of this nature. Mary accepts with alacrity and the three of them toast to her success in the future.

Thus, is the Much-Piddling Silver Bayonet Troop formed and Mary’s head whirls with ideas, but initially she must recruit some like-minded and courageous individuals, as she cannot work alone. Immediately, she thinks of her old friend and sometime lover, the disaffected French noblewoman, Countess Marie Antoinette du Bedandboard. The daughter of a Royalist cuirassier officer, the Countess is virulently opposed to Napoleon, whom she refers to as that ‘stunted and odious little Crapaud’. The Countess is exiled from France and resides in some style at her home in Felpersham in Borsetshire. Mary prepares an invitation to the Countess to come and stay at Snapcase Hall…and so it begins!

To be continued…

Countess du Bedandboard - a creation worthy to take her place amongst the Snapcase pantheon of characters.

You can add "Madame Footscott" to your pantheon at some point as well if you like. She's quite a lady.

I think that we have received some valuable information on Scrotum. He is clearly undead of some type. A doddering, wrinkled servant in the early 1800s and the 1920s. However, gorged with blood!!

I think you may have something there! We Snapcase's have never before pondered on the mystery of why the current Scrotum is always old. It may be as you say and definitely food for thought.  :o

Vaggers and Wilgut Spleens, many thanks for your kind remarks.   :)

These things are always a bit boring without any lovely colour pictures but no minis finished yet, I am afraid. However, in view of the fact that it's International Women's Day, I have decided to have an all-female cast for the Much-Piddling Silver Bayonet Troop.

Fabulous backstory and what would appear to be a fine selection of aristocratic young ladies in the Much Piddling Troop.

I look forward to reading the tales of derring-do that will no doubt follow.

Bit of a delay in producing the unit due to an upcoming holiday.  :D  However, everything else is ready, scenery, monsters, clue markers etc.

You know, if there was a bloodthirsty Unicorn on the loose, an all-female unit might well be the very thing Horseguards requires. (I'm thinking just using the Black Dog stat line, maybe.) And any liche who is prophesized to never fall to any man's hand...

Qwirz, War Monkey and Grumpy Gnome, thank you.

Major Shelley's unit is now up to 50% strength. They are joined by Lady Constance Snoring-Cabstanleigh. Lady Constance is a sapper by trade and is seen here holding her copy of De Tractatu Magicarum Linguarum by Dr. Martin Pale.

I probably don't need to tell the very informed readers here, but the De Tractatu Magicarum Linguarum is a work which treats of the various languages used in magic, including the Sidhe tongue. Dr. Pale concluded the latter was connected with the ancient Celtic languages of the British Isles.

Lady Constance is from the very nice people at Black Pyramid Gaming (https://www.blackpyramid.co.uk/collections/black-pyramid-infantry) (with the hand-swap from original shako to a book).

The S.T.A.M.P. (Silver-bayonet Troop At Much-Piddling) are now up to 5/8ths strength. Major Shelley has now recruited an old naval friend of hers, Ronnie Toastrack, or more properly 1st Lieutenant Veronica Toastrack, of the Gloucestershire Toastracks. Ronnie will be the unit's Sailor.

"Ronnie, my lass, you stole my ship, you sailed to England and left us with barely some clothes to wear on that abandoned island only to join those other lassies? Now look at us, weren't we enough of a woman to make you stay and hang around with us? Hanging you around is what we have in mind now, traitor! Say your prayers..."

She is great! There is nothing wrong with having a sailor in the group, even better if she has her own ship!

My plan for TSB is to have a ship with crew and the shore party will make up the Team. I can rotate lesser characters in out and have a "Pool" to draw from when characters get killed off. I will have my team officer for Shore Party affairs and a ship's Captain for action on the seas.

I hope this gives you some ideas to play on.

A lifetime devoted to getting outside of a sinew-stiffening libation helps with all of life's little anxieties. Mankind is born a double gin under-par!

“Intoxicated? The word does not express it by a mile. I was oiled, boiled, fried, plastered, whiffled, sozzled, and blotto.”

Moving swiftly on, some ancillary characters for my forthcoming games of TSB. On the left is the Comte Coqsure du Bedandboard, the estranged husband of the aforementioned, Comtesse du Bedandboard. On the right we have Johnathan and Arabella Strange.

Yes, I agree, Blackwolf and white knight. The Ziterdes watchtower that I have, is a very nice piece of scenery.

Meanwhile, the Silver Bayonet Troop are now up to ¾ strength. They are joined by Dr. Pattie O’Fernyture, née Harper. Pattie Harper was born in 1782 in Tangaveane, County Donegal. She was the second of eleven children who survived infancy in a farming family in the Catholic peasantry that predominated in rural Ireland at the time. Her younger brother Patrick (the fourth child), may be known to some readers for his exploits in the 95th Rifles. Patrick had left the family in 1801 to join the British Army. Pattie’s father was Irish, but her mother was from Catalonia. She was married off young, so that there were less mouths to feed in the Harper farm. Her husband, Darragh O’Fernyture was killed in the Irish rebellion of 1798. Pattie attended medical studies at Trinity College, Dublin, paid for by a rich uncle, Séamus O’Fernyture.

Here she is, armed with her trusty blunderbuss.

Thanks, Qwirz, syrinx0 and War Monkey.

Getting near to trying out the first solo scenario now. I was short of wolves and dogs, so I painted some yesterday, very quickly. Not looking too good, but they'll be OK. One or two werewolves required as well, but I already had some of those. Just need to get set up now.

That reminds me I need to get more wolves too!

Everything looks great, your werewolves look awesome! I hope to see more of "The Bad Things That Are Out There"

My plan is too due everything in 15mm range. I received figures for Ghost, Ghouls, Ghast, Goblins, Orcs, Trolls, Vampires, two different sets Cultist plus leaders, wolves, Gargoyles Have will make for large demons, a set of small familiars that will make for smaller demons. I have washed them all and are ready for basing this week.

As I had mentioned earlier, my team will work from a ship. In the book you're trying to beat other nations to said artifacts to win the war over other nations, however I am planning to have a main Cult that is trying to do the same thing, but they want to be the ones pulling the puppet's strings over all nations. Along with a Vampire Clan that are out to rule the world as well.

I too will be playing it solo as well, have my Marines on the way from Stonewall Figures there are the Americans, British and French for the moment I will be getting the rest of the other nation later. I have Pirate figures from Rebel Minis for the ship's crew I have other figures in my queue right now form other manufactures. I have plans drawn for a Church, a Cemetery as well as for buildings for a village and a port town. I have the plans drawn up for the ship I'll be using, I just need to plan out the other terrain items I will be needing at first mostly the port, I want it to be modular so I can rearrange them for different layouts. I have the pink foam board for doing so. I hope to be posting about all of them soon! I have nothing ready, I am just now diving into this era of terrain and everything else, for me it has always been Sci-Fi.

Again, I am looking forward to seeing your gaming table and terrain that you will be using as well.

War Monkey, that sounds like a fascinating plan you have there. I do like the ship idea and am looking forward to seeing what that looks like. It looks like you are going to have quite a collection of minis for this. As to terrain, well, here we go.

...as the evening shadows lengthen over Piddling Down, the men of Loose Chippings (a village not far from Much-Piddling) wend their way home from the fields.

At their rear, the Alderman of Loose Chippings, Churm Rooftrouser stops to berate Foul Ole Ron the beggar. Honeygander Gooseboote, Loose Chipping's Lady of the Night is in the gibbet again. Caught soliciting again in the hours of daylight, no doubt.

The men are thirsty after a day's work in the fields and are heading straight for the Cockdropper's Arms for some cider.

Landlord, Scrabster McGurgle and his wife Tully, await their regulars with tankards full of the best scrumpy in Loose Chippings.

Esme Weatherwax and Nanny Gripes  are arguing over the stew for the men's supper. Nanny Gripes is known for adding extra wild garlic but it gives Esme the wind! Goody Plumbob looks on.

Captain Jedediah Shortcake of the Loose Chippings Fencibles is in his usual seat, carousing with Mimsie Slopcorner (Loose Chipping's other Lady of the Night).

So what's the point of all this jibber-jabber, you may well ask. A message arrived at Snapcase Hall for Major Shelley. Cavendish-Bentinck (the PM, you'll recall) has had a report from one of his agents that the long-lost artefact, Spongerobert's Orb of Seeing may be in the vicinity of the ruined watch tower, north of Loose Chippings, on Piddling Down. The Much-Piddling Eight are tasked to investigate and recover this valuable piece, if possible. It could be of immense help in determining the plans of the Harvestmen. With no time to lose, the gels head to the old watch tower as the sun begins to set. What perils may this night bring? We shall see...

Wow! All those figures and your terrain is awesome! :-*  I have a lot of catching up to do! compared to your setting. lol

I can't wait to see how their adventure turns out!

I have a wish list going for civilian figures as well as additional military ones. I also have a wish list for battlefield damage terrain wagons, cannons, dead horses, dead cattle and dead soldiers, for moving across fresh battlefields. Setting up for encounter with ghouls, ghast, and revenants, after all it is during the Napoleonic period. Plus, a wish list for old ruins and damaged builds along with whatever else runs across my mind.

War Monkey, you've reminded me, I have some dead cattle somewhere, must find them, thanks.

Qwirz, imagination is our only weapon in the ongoing war against reality!

So, the Cockdropper's Arms and the villagers of Loose Chippings are just for atmosphere, really. The main action will centre around the ruined watch tower. I have laid out a 6' x 3'board but will only be using 3' x 3' (see second photo) for the first scenario 'Wolf Pack'.

Indeed. As the sun begins to sink in the sky, the sound of wolves howling can be heard amongst the trees surrounding the old watch tower.

Thanks for all your comments on the table set-up. I should point out that the terrain tiles were made by Silent Invader, of this forum and lovely they are too!

Unfortunately, just as the game commenced, reality intruded! The Authorities decreed that the kitchen table was required for what apparently, is it's intended purpose. I thought it was for wargaming but Lady Snapcase has this crazy idea that you sit there eating. I will be setting it up again in the library at Snapcase Hall this time, not the kitchen.

In the meantime, I have painted the Northstar Goblins. I rather like them, they do look rather nasty and vicious!

Currently my game room is being used for storage until I finish getting a couple of rooms rewired and walls refinished.

You’ve done a grand job on those little villains. I’m relieved that we have the Seiner kaiserlich-königlichen (k.-k.) apostolischen Majestät Rechtschaffenes
(Leib-)Jägerkorps. to protect us from such abomination.

A worthy addition to your SB cast-list - I think you may have sold me on getting some of those.

So, that was in May 2022 and we are now in April 2024. It's been a while, but we played a game of Silver Bayonet yesterday. Doug ex-em4 and I played on-line, using my Carnevale scenery, which you can see on another thread on the Gothic Horror board.

Without further ado, the Gentlemen of Much-Piddling bring you the main feature, "Dark Doings in La Serenissima!".

HMS Black Pig, a small sloop commanded by Ronnie Toastrack (1st Lieutenant Veronica Toastrack) had landed the Much-Piddling Troop in a quiet part of Venice, near the Chiesa di San Francesco della Vigna, under cover of darkness.

In a secret meeting in Padua several days ago, the troop, under the command of Major Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (Much-Piddling Hussars) had received orders to proceed to the Arsenale di Venezia.

During this meeting, it was revealed that a sister troop of the Much-Piddlers, the Market Snodsbury Troop, had been dispatched to the Arsenale to gain intelligence on a secret naval project, only to disappear without trace.

The Most Serene Republic of Venice was no more, after the depredations of the French and the Austrians. During the French occupation, Marcel le Fesse (Napoleon’s master shipwright) had taken up occupation in the Arsenale and there were rumours of him working on some undersea design, based on the secret papers of Leonardo da Vinci.

So, here they were, the Silver Bayonet Troop, crossing the Canal de le Galeazze and entering the Arsenale.

Gathering together, Mary briefed the team on their objectives. Find the Market Snodsbury girls and retrieve them and the secret papers they were carrying.

As dawn breaks over La Serenissima, the troopers can see dark wolves prowling, it looks like they are picking over the remains of human bodies. Can this be why the Snodsbury girls disappeared?

Undeterred, the Much-Piddling troop descend from their rendezvous, with revenge in their hearts. Seen here, from top to bottom are Duchess Ophelia Lovett-Behynde the Occultist, Lady Constance Snoring-Cabstanleigh the Sapper, Marchioness Honeysuckle Tossington-Crust, Infantrywoman and Captain Pattie O’Fernyture, the Doctor.

As Patty is attacked by the nearest Dark Wolf, another approaching Dark Wolf metamorphoses into a Werewolf.

Patty dispatches the first wolf and is attacked by another.

As the werewolf advances, some of the troopers climb up onto the railings, to get a better shot. Some shots find their mark, but don’t seem to stop it’s ponderous advance.

Can nothing stop this supernatural horror?

As Patty disposes of a second wolf, the werewolf is poised to attack. Is this the end for the gallant Irish doctor?

But lo, just as the werewolf is poised to rip Patty apart with its vicious claws and fangs, a shot rings out from Peaches Snapcase (Riflewoman the Honourable Verity “Peaches” Snapcase) and the werewolf is down.

More wolves move to attack, but now the Much-Piddling girls are well placed to repel them. Several are killed in a welter of powder and shot.

Duchess Ophelia Lovett-Behynde is now free to advance and discovers the secret orders of the now deceased Market Snodsbury Troop.

Comtesse Marie Antoinette du Bedandboard inspects the grisly remains of one of the Snodsbury troopers.

Commandeering a nearby gondola, Duchess Ophelia Lovett-Behynde, clutching the secret papers, heads back to the Black Pig with the good Doctor and the Marchioness aboard. They have orders to return in the jolly boat to collect the rest of the troop.

Whilst they wait for the jolly boat, Peaches, Mary and Marie Antoinette advance onto the bridge, to hold off the remaining wolves.

“Ahoy, the Black Pig”.

The wolves are brought down, one by one.

As they wait, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley surveys the carnage and wonders where they go from here.

It was a good game, wasn’t it m’lud….I don’t think either of us had looked at Silver Bayonets for a couple of years so it was like starting from scratch really. There were a few delays in getting started when my extempore bookmarks kept sliding out of the rulebook but we got there in the end.

The format of playing a solo scenario as a co-operative worked well via a video link.. The gameplay was fun, enhanced by your fantastic, burgeoning, Venice setting. At one point, it seemed as though the wolves would be never ending, as fast as we killed them, more appeared. However, getting rid of the werewolf, with everyone who could do shooting at it, certainly made things more relaxing. And finding the all important papers at the first attempt was very handy.

So, a success all round I would say - thanks for the game; I look forward to the next foray into the mysterious backwaters of Venice.

MaleGriffin, Mary Shelley is from Gringo '40s, Ronnie is from Black Scorpion, Patty is from Colonel Bills' and the rest I think are from either Elite Wargames or Black Pyramid.
