Title: [Commercial] Castles in the Sky- Available on the Osprey Website
Post by: Easy E on March 07, 2022, 09:32:57 PM
Greetings all,

This 5+ year journey is almost at its completion.  Castles in the Sky is up on the Osprey website for pre-order.  This is the game of flying battleships circa 1914.

https://ospreypublishing.com/store/osprey-games/osprey-wargames/castles-in-the-sky

This one is 80 pages long and filled with brand new art from Osprey, and brand new photos from Brigade Models.  This is a very nice looking book, perhaps my favorite one that I have done with Osprey yet.

If you have questions let me know and I will do my best to answer them.

How many models do you need on average and how accurate do they have to be to their profile?

The game is model and scale agnostic, but it helps visually if both sides adhere to the same general ship size.  However, it uses Measurement Units instead of hard measurements, and the "center of mass" (Usually the peg stand, but some large models have multiple pegs, so center of mass) for all ranges and measurements.  Therefore, any models scale can work.

The game can be played 1-on-1 ship battles up to a dozen vs a dozen.  However, I typically play 6-7 ships per side.

Sorry, when I say profile I mean "X amount of guns etc" rather then size.

Oh, then I would say.... not accurate at all.

After all, it is model agnostic, and who knows what people will bring to the table.

Congratulations!  Just out of curiosity, how locked are the rules to the early 20th century? I have been looking for some streamlined rules for Star Blazers/Yamato and was wondering if this could be easily adapted for that.

Thanks!

I have been thinking about how to respond to this question, and the real answer is.... I don't know.

My knowledge of Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers is too limited to say Yes.

No worries.  Though based in space, the fighting styles and ships in the show are inspired by early 20th century navies, which it why I thought of this as a possibility.

I am sure many of you have noticed that the Osprey Wargaming Series has another title coming out in June.  This one is called, Castles in the Sky- A Game of Flying Battleships.  This book was 5 or 6 years in the making, and has been one of my most difficult games to get "right".  There are a couple of things you will need to know about it right away:

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg25x6xBB0wtCx0ZuC1--MFnf4PnGA7zvhRtUN4g5V8ex0Zkq_r68Jc6hz4FNSyrIRgi9ZPxc00M06d9vHGdNdNnFpTnvTKQwjrP9Sfpw1qS7tEbLjtefhR68AkB8v6MYLyt_yIVMYqVo2aePSoR2PNok-y9kXvEdJzt27ZjGVbiD1-DSMSIO2VFXl3=s320)

-This game is 80 pages long, longer than a typical Osprey Blue Book

-All the art in this book is new and unique, never before seen in any Osprey book

-All the model shots are new from Brigade Models taken just for this book

-This book is V5.2 of the rules, and took many people's help and assistance to get this far.  This one was a community project just as much as something I wrote.  Big thanks to all those who helped along the way, there are too many Usernames, names, and handles to document without getting into trouble for missing one, but you know who you are!  Huge thanks.

As many of you know, the first game I made from scratch was a 40K wet-navy wargame, and I see my efforts here as a return to my "roots".  This is a game that sprang from a few different sources of inspiration:

-Castles of Steel and Dreadnought by Massie.  Two works about the naval arms race prior to World War I between Britain and Germany.  They are the sources of the name for this book.

-My studies in college about naval warfare and work on pre-WWI diplomatic history

-The Aeronef genre of games such as Aeronef, Imperial Skies, Leviathans, Sky Galleons of Mars, Dystopian Wars, and many more, and Musings on the Delta Vector blog

-A variety of wargames from oceans to space and beyond.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjuyFrIORjLVuHPo_WwG0s0VRYQycKvQDURYnqOo61h3O7Up-1oUwHJO1JONNPCvzBejwjdJ5vlZCjoMa4OQT3fHwy65KBEFiEnhMPrhCgyfUeI89j4AlcIVlKu0AVzL_NnzjGiDHHVBgIwhl-8oPDYlKKGIBWH_ZDDD82ORQE8CvNV52l9Fh343mEM=w300-h400)

As I approached Castles in the Sky, I had a few key design elements that I wanted to be sure to capture in the rules.  I will let you read them and decide if I was successful in my goals.  My design notes did not make it to the final book for space reasons, so you will have to read them here instead.  I hope you enjoy or gain some insights.

Castles in the Sky had the following design goals:

-Scale and Model agnostic

-3D battlespace

-Meaningful choices to be made

-Ships that can take a pounding, until they can't

-Battleship > Cruiser > Escort > Battleship

-Maneuver matters

-Some relationship to naval warfare of the period..... but flying

You can read more about the game and how I came to these design goals on my Blood and Spectacles blog post.  That can be found here:

what models are available for this game, please ?

is the game ruling some kind of "inertia" for the movement phase ?

is there some boarding action too ?

thanks
Title: Re: [Commercial] Castles in the Sky- Available on the Osprey Website
Post by: Easy E on April 25, 2022, 06:11:37 PM
There are a number of ranges available for this game, as it is scale and model agnostic.  The primary one is Brigade's Imperial Skies range, but there is also the Catalyst Games Leviathans, the Dystopian Wars range, the GHQ Micronauts range, etc.  You can pretty much put any ship model you want on a flying base if you wish.  The game also functions fine with paper templates too.

As for inertia, it is not called out as such but there is some movement impacts to goin up, going down, and ships can not stop on a dime, but can be stalled.

Boarding Actions are present as well, but are pretty uncommon.  You did not get many boarding actions in the Age of Dreadnoughts.

Just an FYI, but checked with FLGS, and I will be getting one, and they'll have at least another on the shelf as soon as it gets to distributors.

Thanks!

Doug

Alas, just had a word with my store's manager, and though it shows as available on Osprey's site, it appears we can't get it in until the 13th.  :'(

Just teasing with the tear; with the speed I get things started, when it is in my hands will be 'just fine.'

Well, I made some paper templates for myself to playtest by downloading ship plans from Wikipedia for actual WWI ships!

You can also find some paper templates and tokens made by a fellow gamer here:

There is a new review up from Ash from Guerrilla Miniature Games:

Thank you for the resources they look great with any luck I can now get round to playing these rules - like the ship counters as they look more like alien worlds than an alternate reality WWI.

I got the rules yesterday- looks interesting

How closely do your vessel profiles match to the Brigade Models ships?

Flight stand wise, other than Aeronautica Imperialis are there any others with built in dials?
Title: Re: [Commercial] Castles in the Sky- Available on the Osprey Website
Post by: Easy E on July 06, 2022, 02:35:00 PM
Flight stand wise, I am not 100% sure.  Litko probably has something that works.

As for how closely the profiles match Brigade ships, keep in mind I tried to base my profiles on historical ships.  This is a scale and mini-agnostic game so therefore I did not even look at the Brigade models when making profiles.

However, that has not stopped me from using them.  I just say, this one is a X class, and that one is a Y class.  As long as I can tell the ships apart in game, it doesn't matter to me.

Thanks - I’ll check out Litko and other likely sources for flight stands. Having ones that change height would be cool, but may not be that practical!

With the number of photo of Brigade models in the rules, I wasn’t sure if there was any direct link - but as there isn’t I’ll stop second guessing and go with the ones that I like the look of!

...

I was just looking on the site, but didn't seen anything adjustable for height, but bases with openings for dice and an upright with 'steps' to put a height 'flag' might do you. I think there was seven or so step/notches.

Alas, couldn't find exactly what I sought, but will keep trying. Can't seem to make the search work for me, and with something like eight thousand possibilities, browsing is kinda daunting.

Greetings all,

The blog has some pictures from the book launch gathering in Powell, Wyoming at Gestalt Studios.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtGVL4i2EON-yiPClhgw0kpHKcF31IKkRj9Q54csVzAYvqsbhTW1-xMN3mIvkLHSg6z52hB8DVIVq9SJVHeh3VqEzQw0kWv_8cIU7E8KeGlbfdqCV_Yqt0lRoq6h9lKNqvcBDgU08__Ug30vFg_D47JwKk0XWuVvfulFX3f5ygT1Vxs0ROQWtYlx3D/w640-h426/IMG_2891.JPG)

It is always tricky doing something like this in the summer near Yellowstone.  There are literally 100's of things people would rather be doing.  Therefore, I was very happy with the turn out for the event.  We kept the Demo table full, and I was pretty busy interacting with folks during the whole time.  In fact, the game went a bit longer than the allotted 2 hours.

I got some new, potential recruits for our small wargaming group, sold some books, and met a lot of great people.  That is what I call a success.  I don't have a ton of videos or photos, as I was trying to help moderate a demo game, pitch folks, sell books, etc.  Therefore, my attention was all over the place.

Anyway, if you want more pictures, you can check them out on the blog here:

It did indeed. Based on the short review there I’ll probably pick up a copy soon. I have a couple of small fleets that I bought to use with Aeronef, then packed away. Castles seems like a good set to restart that project with!

I tracked down this review on the Historical Miniature Gaming Society website:

https://www.hmgs.org/blogpost/1779451/Historical-Book-Reviews?tag=warships

Quote
BOOK REVIEW: Castles in the Sky: A Wargame of Flying Battleships

by Eric Farrington.

Softcover (7.25 x 9.75 inches). 80 pages. 2022.
Osprey Wargames 30.

Consider this a First Look as I have not gamed with these rules.

In the post-Martian invasion world of 1872, humans reverse engineer Martian technology and learned how to mix new chemicals with lighter metals and add steam power to create lighter-than-air warships. The old GDW Space 1889 used kinda the same setting. Yeah, it's a steam-punk speculation of John Carter of Mars.

Brigade Models makes small aerial ships and apparently here's the Osprey rules for them. Think of this as pre-WWI naval warfare, but with elevations.

The rules uses three ship classes: escorts, cruisers, and battleships. Individual ships use a series of firepower, movement, and special characteristics to differentiate, with a number of d6s rolled for firing and also adding and subtracting dice for various sky terrain and ship attributes.

One quirk is that a lot of specialty "Command" actions use 1d6 rolls with a 4+ for success. Otherwise, it's move and roll to hit (4+ base), with 2d6 damage table for successful hits. Boarding (rolling a number of Command Dice -- again 4+ base to hit), entangling, air torpedoes, airplanes, and sky mines add spice to direct fire.

A number of scenarios along with a campaign game are included. Ship specs for nine countries' aerial navies are included. The usual array of Osprey illustrations populate the booklet.
As I noted, I don't know how this plays, but it is encouraging me to break out some of my Avalanche Press games and loot the counters for a test drive.

And you never know. Alas, I failed to find flying ironclad miniatures at Historicon. I imagine you can use regular 1880-1890s ironclads just fine.
Enjoyed reading the rules for its possibilities.

Given my old-man's-attention-span, I keep getting side-tracked on minor quibbles when working out the games structure, and what I assume is a paired down quick reference would help.

Much thanks to you and Mr. Kurcina! I susspect the ship templates will be as much an assist to my endeavours as the quick ref has been.

I will point out that, currently, the Quick Ref link in this blog post is broken, though copy-and-paste of the URL works just fine.

As for keeping info on the board, I wonder if I may try scenario bashing to keep numbers within a d6 range, as there are plenty of bases about that will hold same.

As many of you know, when I was writing Castles in the Sky there was a strict word count for the book.  However, I wrote so much content that I had to go back and remove some of it from the book.  Even with my edits, the final book is still larger than any of the other Osprey Wargaming Series books!  Instead of the normal 64 pages, it is 80 pages of content!

To make the rules fit to the new expanded size, I still had to cut out some rules and other details that I wanted to keep in.  The biggest space eater, was the ship templates.  Therefore, I had to remove a lot of ships.  Therefore, each fleet was left with only 1 Battleship, a cruiser of two, and 1 or two escorts.  All nationalities lost at least a single ship to make space.  I want to make these ships available to the community here on the blog!

Over the next few weeks the blog will have new and expanded content for Castles in the Sky.  You can see the first entry with some new ships for the British, French, and Germans.  In addition, there are rules for the Regional Powers that never made the book.  You can find this new content here:

When I look at it on the writing part of blogger, it looks fine.  But when it fits it into the blog... no such luck.  I will keep playing around with it.

In the meantime....

FYI- I fixed the formatting on the blog.

When all the fleet updates and rules are posted, I will put them in a PDF version.  Thanks.

No, thanks to you!

My 'edit' pulled the same trick when I pasted to the forum.  >:(

Finally put ships-on-the-table, solo mode. Having fun, but getting itch to resurrect other rule sets again, as well.

Hope you're happy...

Kewl beans!

Alas, don't log on to YouTube, so can't leave comments there.

He did have me going when he said 'three' factions for Irregular; I'll check, but pretty sure still Manacus and Uranus.

I will say that I HAVE used poker chips, as well as the smaller chips you can find in some board games, and suggest you don't dismiss that quickly. Given the number I've found in thrift/charity shops for damn cheap, ticks off that box.

As for thinness, you can always glue as many together as you need/want thickness. Basically three colours, but I use a red per 'mega-band' and a few white as 'band increments' between.

Dragonlance, now there was a blast from the past! Thick, soft white plastic disks with place to put the dragon base. I thought they worked like c**p, but did look awesome.

I assume plenty of folk, when presented with name of game flogged by Bridade Models as Aeronautica Imperialis, screamed 'Damn right too GW!' Actually, two games, Aeronef and Imperial Skies.

Thanks, Eric! I MIGHT consider this solution with a bit larger, steadier bit on the bottom if I ever give up on the Devil's tools.

Seriously, gambling equipment for sacred miniatures? Blasphemy!

Next I'll be rollin' dem bones... lol

The last rules update with Ground defense rules and ground defense stats is up on the blog.

I will have a PDF version with the addendum data on Wargame Vault on the Blood and Spectacles page in a few weeks.  Until then the blog should get you through.  Enjoy!

The Joy of Wargaming has been ramping up to play some games of Castles in the Sky.  Here are some of his initial attempts at playing the game.  Might be of interest to those here:

Edit: The Joy of Wargaming does talk a bit about lack of a QRS and some other resources.  However, these resources are available on my Blog here:
