Title: Miniature sizing tool?
Post by: racm32 on April 04, 2022, 05:00:22 PM
Does anyone make a small tool for quickly determining miniatures size? Ideal has just 15mm, 20mm, 28mm, and 32mm marked on it? I'd love to have something like it I can keep on my key chain so of I see something with wargaming potential I can do a quick scale comparison.

From some promotion a while back I got a little Keychain tape measure in inches and centimeters which has served me well on many occasions. Closest thing I can suggest.

I once designed a small tool for determining if finds along the way, like buildings, vehicles etc would be suitable for gaming. It's a creditcard sized measuring device with 28mm and 15mm silhouettes on it, complete with elevations for bases.

You can find the thread I started in 2011 right here (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=35028.0). On page 3 you'll find the definitive design.

Only the one prototype was ever printed, but it has resided in my wallet for nearly a decade, as evidenced by the obvious wear, tear and grime accumulated over the years. And I've occasionally used it too!

MHS Miniature Height Scale (https://www.miniature-heroes.co.uk/product/mhs-miniature-height-scale/)

Any use? If so, you’d have to contact them about when they’ll be in stock again.

That’s the one, sorry thought it was in the scale-o-matic thread, in the workbench (should be though ;) )
Mines in pretty much the same state from being kept at the back of my wallet.

Thats a great idea. Unfortunately the images on your old thread are not showing.

I used to have a similar card I carried, but I found that even with that it was hard to really gauge the size.  Maybe if it was transparent or something.
I finally just stuck a 1/72 and 30mm figure in my pocket and carry them around.  That works better for me.

Though now I'm wondering if a silhouette cut out of thick Lucite or acrylic would work.  That could easily be on a key chain.

Cheers :)

Try using a different browser, such as Firefox. My hosting space does not have the latest certificates (because it's old), so Chrome and some other browsers will not automatically display the images. Sometimes opening the image in a fresh browser window helps too...

I just have a mini tape measure on my keychain.  Comes in handy for a lot of things.

There is an app one can get for one mobile phone that gives measurements. Never used it myself but seen it used - could be used to measure distances and ranges on a wargame table too...

I do like DS16 - I just keep a figure in the car and if I find something with potential, I just go grab the miniature to compare.  A bit easier for me since I've only done 15 mm (until last year adding 10 mm Vietnam to my collections).

Seems to me someone out there in the acrylic world can put something together fairly easily - just not sure it would prove profitable in the end.  Or maybe someone creates a print-it-yourself 3D item (wouldn't work for me, no intention of getting into 3D printing).

about 7 years ago I took a flimsy plastic ruler and cut it down to the size of a credit card.  Keep it in my wallet and use it all the time, mostly to gauge the size and scale of resale shop toys that might have wargaming uses.

I prefer having all the ruler gradients over just specific figure heights.

I used to keep a guitar string gauge with ruler (about the same size but made of metal) in my wallet but now just the thin plastic ruler.

@eilif - That's a really simple solution, might have to try that.

Good to ask this question here rather than of a wife or significant other, lest hurt feelings be engendered.  ;)

There used to be a thing called The Scale Card (http://www.thescalecard.com/), available in different versions, but it's OOP. :-[

Quote
The Scale Card is a credit card size tool for every model builder who wants to keep everything in scale. Easy to use at swap meets, flea markets, antique shops, even hobby shops, and at home on your workbench. Using figures (or heads) in scale and three inches of scale rule, it keeps your purchases within your selected scale. Cards range from 1:12 to 1:700, some in metric.
