Title: DBA game(s)
Post by: has.been on April 11, 2022, 08:03:46 PM
Had a chance for a mornings gaming with a friend
(Machsmecha aka Chris)
Thought I would introduce him to DBA. We managed two games.
Here are a few pictures to prove it.
051 = Carthaginians (Boo Hiss!)
052 = Noble Republican Romans
This was game No. 1.
Romans advanced, keeping a nice straight line. The Carthaginians
got into a mess trying to bring their reserves across the river.
Thus when the Romans attacked they were able to pick Punic
off one by one. The four bases needed for victory soon came.
Wonderful, then came game two.
053 = Hannibal & his Motley Crue.
054 = Proud Latin Line.
055 = Setting a possible ambush in the hills. Not just their side that
          can do 'Punic Treachery'
056 = I push Velites off on my right flank. It was a one way mission,
          they tried to ambush some Gallic cav, only to get ridden all over! :(
057 = Carthago Delenda est! (Carthage Must be Destroyed!)
          Unfortunately Chris is learning & starts to redeploy troops to his
           left flank.
058 = I am already down 3 bases at this point. I have to do something
          drastic if I am to avoid the ire of the Senate. My general launches
           a charge into the fray.  Hannibal see the opportunity for ending
           this with personal glory. He leads his bodyguard straight for  the
           Roman Consul. Rome falls.
           The Victor Ludorum (winner of the games) is Chris.

I certainly did enjoy it and quickly learned that splitting your forces across a river is a terrible, terrible idea  ;D I don't think I used the elephant once, Ol' Stompy shall have to save his trotters for next time!

In game 2 my plan A went out the window, so coming back along the road to pincer the Romans seemed the best option. It worked too, next time I'll try and have my own army ready to play as well.

Look forward to that. Let me know how you progress with...
Normans, if you don't change your mind.
I might see what figures I have for possible opponents.

I have made that very same mistake several times.

When it comes to 'Terrible' mistakes I have quite a library lol lol lol
A FEW examples:-
When about to throw in a DBA game my opponent pointed out that,
though it was down to a straight dice roll, if I won I would push him
back, but if he won...I would be destroyed!!! :o

In a Hordes of the Things game, I placed my general safely behind my
behemoth, only to find out (when it was pushed back) that it squashed
anyone behind it!! :-[

I managed to lose a DBA game before I even moved!
Poor initial deployment matched by my opponent firing a
War Engine across the table (at my General) =General
dead, no where to be 'pushed back' to.

In an AK47 game I started, maintained, then lost a fight for a hill (that I knew was
of no great value. ???

In a flying game I was sure increase in height was FOLLOWED by horizontal movement.
In actuality it was t'other way round, & despite other players warning me I ploughed
into a cliff with my last words being, 'Trust me I know what I'm doing'  lol

Unfortunately I could go on & on. :D

Those 2 veteran armies still look great Pete.

Thanks Gregor. Nearly all done by the talented Pete Duckworth.
The shield on the Carthaginian camp follower though was hand
done by little old me. That was, of course, back in the day when I
didn't need glasses.
It is a copy of an actual shield design taken off a Punic vase.

Fun looking game and love the accounts of failures as well as the cracking shield.

Thanks Golgotha.
On other failures, a friend recommended we move over to the then
brand new Ros 6mm figures. 'We'll be able to fill a 6' x 4' table with
a realistic number of figures.
I did try, honest!
I did a trial group of 20 hoplites.
Spears had to be replaced (scale wise they were more like cabers)
so I carved them all off. Not much figure left. New spears came from
the bristles from a tooth brush.
Each hoplite was given a freehand painted shield! :o
They even were given coloured HEMS to their tunics.
Took be about five times as long as the same number of 25mm figures.
I entered them into the Society of Ancients painting competition.
I don't think the judges even saw they were there! lol lol lol
