Well, Here I am again, yet with another project while keeping all the others up and running.
Since my latest trip to the Ganzi/Garze region of China I've collected plenty of references and pictures of the intricate yet frugal architecture of the region.
While most of the "traditional" buildings are made in interlaced tree trunks, the truly old ones generally have a lot more plastered areas around.
I kept all of this in the backburner for quite some times, but recently with my partner we decided to take the plunge - and we made a first page of concepts, starting from memory + google + my own sketches taken while there.

From there I knew where to go: the windows are by far the most prominent feature of these buildings, and the one that would then define the gauge for the other details. After a couple of iterations on Sketchup we came up with some satisfying results:

... and printed:

The idea is to "fit" the windows into slots into the core of the building, which will be done in XPS. The plastering of those walls makes them rounded and soft, and the XPS is perfect for that.

Here's a first test. We're planning to make the windows a lot more colourful, and possibly add some touches of paint to the walls as well. For now, I'm calling this a success.
Very excited about the project, we'll try to keep the thread updated!
Cheers,
Jack
EDIT: Anyone would recommend some good quality tibetan models? Peasants and such, or characters. The Copplestone ones are pretty bad, honestly, and lazily posed. I'd love to have something slightly higher quality, even 3D files would do (yes, i'm THAT desperate. I generally never print 28mm figures)
-
Waaaaawwwwwww NICE WINDOWS!
-
Wow 8) 8) fantastic
Really hope you manage to keep the thread updated
-
This looks like a greta project! I think that the crispness of the windows works perfectly with the more rounded architecture. I am looking forward to your continued work.
-
Wow, that looks great. Can't wait to see the progress on this!
-
Mmm, yes. I hope you go into commercial production.
-
Yes to ALL that the others have said. :-* :-* :-*
-
I thought the Copplestone Figures are pretty good especially the cavalry. The poses of the Matchlockmen could have been more varied though.
-
Thank you all! We're gonna start with the building over the weekend, updates soon! :)

The cavalry is indeed a lot better, but since we're planning to work on this project for a more pulp-alley-ish kind of games, i don't think i have use for that.
I would love to find peasants, some personalities and possibly some yaks (the copplestone ones are a good option for sure).

The build has started!

We're now planning where to put all the windows, then the plastering can start!

Look forward to watching this develop, Cracking stuff so far.

Amazing!
May I ask when you were able to visit? I was last there in 2011
-
I like your drawings as much as I'm going to like the finished article.
Lovely work.
-
Smashing stuff. Watching with interest!
-
Wow, I love the detail on those prints. The building WIP is looking good too.
What thickness of XPS are you using?
-
Great stuff.
Keep up the good work.
-
Woah - I'm amazed by the amount of replies! Thank you all!
Replying to the more specific questions:
What thickness of XPS are you using?
I generally cut my XPS with my proxxon cutter. Honestly, it's a VERY CRAPPY tool, highly inaccurate and all, but does the job for this kind of buildings.
This considered, I generally try to cut a 5 cm thick XPS into four sheets, so they range between 1 and 1.5 cm each.
May I ask when you were able to visit? I was last there in 2011
I went to Ganzi/Garze in 2019 right before the lockdown - it was a fairly intense trip, mostly hitchhiking and local busses, and i made it to a local artisan who made pottery out of black clay. I spent there 3 nights and did my own tiny pottery thing while living with his family!
...Speaking of which, starting from a picture found online we selected two first vases:

...and we sculpted our own!

Updates soon-ish, real life permitting. :)

Cool thanks. I built some ruins recently but they are only 6mm thick, next time I'll double up the foam and your walls look great.
Those pots look really good and I like the look of the black clay.

Some door frames... Shutters will follow, I'm still not sure wether they'd look better printed or hand-made.

Ssso.... I've been looking for convincing tibetan miniatures around and other than three porters with Yaks at copplestone and elsewhere some tibetan monks without pictures on the site I didn't found much.
Frustrated, i started doodling...
...and by the end of the day I had done this.

So yeah, my first 28mm miniature ever. :)
Cheers

Wow....don't stop there :o
-
Hum, i should probably upscale the model a bit, shouldn't I?

Hes a short guy, Tibetans often are, just do the next one a little taller.

Fair point. it's weird how height variations in miniatures feel a lot more unacceptable than in real life.
Anyways - I'm calling this done.

C&C welcome, happy to hear ideas for the future!!

Damn he looks good!
More civvies are always welcome!
-
Very nice, love the beads
-
Thank you!! Gotta put some paint on it asap.
Updates soon, first i have to complete the Enlisted army for Full Spectrum Dominance!
Cheers

Amazing work on those Jack! :o :o

Sangennau great job with your printing work, very good designs.
Your terrain is coming along nicely too.
I’m no expert on clothing/uniforms in this area and era but suspect general Tibetan clothing wouldn’t have changed much between 1925 and 1935 and the buildings would be the same so with your Pulp staging I reckon you could even get some Nazi villains from the Ahnenerbe involved in a scenario or two set in 1935 cause you know ‘everyone hates those guys!’…
🙂
-
You’re a great artist!
-
Interesting topic.
You do wonderful work.
Your creativity and skill are exemplary.
The buildings, scatter terrain, and figures are all top-notch.
(Seems like a new range of figures in the offing here.)
-
Splendid!!!
-
Great project. I'm watching this with interest :-*
-
Thanks everyone! <3
I'm kinda stuck at the moment with the project because being a together-activity with the partner it is subject to the other activities going on... but it's not dead! Stay tuned! :)
-
Looks amazing!
-
Small updates for a change - i decided I wanted some Mani Stones, and to do those i would need some engraved patterns....
So yeah, a bit of time has been spent collecting prayers and layouts, and after making them into a blender brush I engraved them into some flat stone:
and off they go to the printer!

Updates soon, hopefully! :)
Cheers
Jack

Nice. Great texture in behind as well.
Never thought of making a brush in blender to create reliefs. Looks like I know what I'll be doing with my next project :)
-
Excellent work!
-
So as these are embossed rather than engraved, are you going to press these into foam to make the tablets? Bloody brilliant idea if so.

The problem is that the real ones are embossed, not engraved (they remove all the rest of the stone, it's crazy). So the idea was to make a mold and pour plaster, which can be broken the way Mani Stone are done in many places! =)

ooh neat! :D

I can't remember the last time that I was so impressed with someones miniature hobby work! The windows are lovely and your figure for me absolutely is spot on and captures the period. I look forward to seeinf how this develops as I have often wanted to print windows and doors to insert into buildings and now I am seeing someone do it. Pure quality, thanks for sharing

What a wonderful project! Great drive, attention to detail, a wish to get it right and TALENT. So much talent. Superb mate, keep going.
