Hi guys,
I wanted to show you my latest set I have just finished: the Viking Longship!
It's designed for 28-30mm minis when printed at 100% and you can build one or as many ships as you need :D
Customization options included hull colors, ornaments, shields, sail types and colors, deck detailing structures.
You can go for a quick and simple build or add more detailing or even a rig with some sowing thread!
The "red stripes sail" build was with mast glued in place. The "black/yellow diamonds sail" was built with a removable mast for easy storage. The last pics shows the build with removable bow and stern figureheads (so you can change them if needed) and everything ready for storage in a flat box.
I am thinking about making a smaller faering and a medium knarr ship too. Any interest in that?
Hope you like the pics!
Chris

Wow! That looks very effective!
-
Wow!
Took the words right out of my mouth! Wow!
-
Very nice
-
That looks amazing for just paper. Damn!
-
I’m definitely interested in the other ships as well. A bit of variety in a fleet would be great!
Just curious, what are the dimensions of the longship? (Length and width?)
-
That is very impressive.
-
Oh that’s nice 8) 8)
-
thanks you guys for the kind words!

The bare hull length (without the figureheads) is apx 50cm/20". Add 1-2" with the figureheads, depending on which of the four options you choose.
The width of the deck at the widest is 4".
And speaking of variety ... you can print and build using color modifiers, so even without all the other detailing options you could have a fleet where each ships looks a little different (lighter, darker etc.)
I'll start working on the geometry of the knarr hull then! :D
-
Thanks for the information! They’re fairly large models, but should be great for scenarios like boarding actions- I’m picturing using them and some knarrs for to game Norse-on-Norse sea battles.

I designed this Longship with gaming action in mind so I went for the longest that made sense and tried to allow enough deck space for many minis! The good thing with papermodels is that you can print them at other scales than the original 100% so it's very easy to make smaller versions too if you need that variety in your fleet. I would just keep the ornamental parts like the shields and rowing bench/chests at 100% so they still make sense with figures (or whatever your baseline scale would be - would be interesting to see a 15mm figure build printed at 50% for example)
During research I found that they actually came in all sizes. The historical finds very often were huge funeral ship so probably not the average raiding ship :)
-
Not too shabby at all 8)
Pretty good for as paper model.
-
And the story continues ... with a Viking Knarr, the trading ship.
Here's a prototype build I made to test the geometry.
I have added these raised deck platform parts so I can have a proper submerged storage deck. Next up is the texture painting and then looking forward to a textured test build!
-
Here are a couple of pics of the first texture test build. Still a lot of work on (esp the splitting of hull side parts) but it's starting to look like something.
Should be enough space on deck for mini action!
... and also space for cargo in the bay!
Finally a comparison to the Longboat I made.
I want to work on some missing parts and then start the second round fixing all the issues I found while doing this build.
But what do you guys think so far?
-
I like that a lot! It looks great and will be a very useful size for a number of scenarios. I can imagine them being used in some of the Oathmark scenarios from the first expansion book…. The open cargo hold with removable barrels and crates is clever, too!

thanks! yes, I wanted to make sure I could replicate the cargo hold. could make some fun gaming going in and out, up and down the different deck heights.
So here is a pic with all the details I have added. These knarrs have those traversing beams, probably to tie up the cargo and also the sails.
I would skip the ones on the raised deck areas for gaming as they would complicate placement with minis but I wanted to have them as an option in case one want's to go that route with a build.
-
That’s interesting about the beams, I hadn’t heard about those (I am in no way an expert on medieval ship building, though!)
It’s a beautiful model and I think you have achieved a great compromise between detail and wargaming requirements.

It's only the Knarr that I have noticed those beam across the deck. And there were a couple of different versions of this ship type too if you look into research. I just settled for one type that made most sense for gaming. Actually I just read today that the Knarr ship type was the one used for long distances like crossing the Atlantic to Iceland and Greenland (not the famous longships)! So kind of a big deal :)
-
Here's a little fun diorama pic I made with the prototype of the Knarr ... LEGO crew loading up the cargo :D

The second test build with the reworked parts and textures is coming together really nice. After all the first test build is always mainly to find everything that doesn't work well and correct it! Very happy how it turned out so far.
Here's a look at how I used texturing hints and a new parts split to "hide" the hull part seams in plain sight :D
(https://papierschnitzel.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/DSC04107.jpg)
-
That looks very natural, I have to look very carefully to see the seam, and even then I’m not certain! I am looking forward to the release of this!
-
I am also looking forward to the release. The second test build went very well. I am happy how all the reworking of the layout and texturing payed off.
Here's a look at the model so far.

The mast can be taken off in case you want to switch to another (sail) or just make space for gaming!
I will add some extra detailing with a sailing rig. Adding those lines usually makes a model really pop :D
So ... more soon!
-
So here is the final build of the Knarr with sailing rig! And I also put the Longship there for size comparison.
Now all I have to do is prepare the PDF files for the parts and the instructions for release :) Should be ready sometime end of next week!
-
Excellent! It’s great to hear that the knarr will be available soon. I’m looking forward to building a few!
-
Those are great... they look great and they are already designed to lie reasonably on a table for game play! Inspiring stuff.
-
Thank you guys! Here's a little update: got the files split up and got the cut files 50% done. Also working on the instructions. I got the step-by-step pics section done but I want to do some overall 3D renders showing how it all goes together.
Already looking forward what you guys will do with the growing Viking fleet :D
-
This looks amazing and I will probably get some of these once I finally have gotten around to figuring out the basing for the ships I already have. For a port scene, you need quite a few after all!
-
Look fantastic, especially with the rigging. You have now done a number of great ships are Medieval cogs and the like potentially in the pipeline?

I do love ships and I'll put it on my list :D

You're welcome! Working on the next one already ... Viking Faering :D
-
To complete the Norse fleet builder series I want to add a smaller rowing boat, the Viking Faering!
Here's a look at the first prototype test builds.
The exchangeable rowing bench inlays allow for different looking faerings, so you can populate your harbor or village coast with a couple of unique looking ones.

-
That’s looking very promising! Very nice shape.
-
The Knarr is just what I was looking for for the Baltic Crusades. I’ve just bought one and will print it at work tomorrow.

Thank you! If you can, share build pics. I always love to see what you guy do with the sets.

Here's a size comparison of the Faering against the Knarr ...

Texturing can start now :D

Liking the look of the new addition - clearly, another must-have...

Thank you sir! :)
Here's a first look at some texturing!

Starting to look like a boat now :D
Need to add some oars and the weathering effects. We might not want pristine new boats on the table!
-
Beautiful work, yet again!
-
I have added an alternate floor texture for more variation potential.
-
Very nice touch with the different floor options. Great addition very keen to see what comes next.

Thanks :) I have not decided the next big project yet. Probably something more with the Grenzwacht (Outpost/Castle) setting. Also want to create a couple more Basic Bits for my Patreon. I think I got enough sets made for the Viking setting for now! But if anyone has ideas what they would like to see, please do let me know.
-
Adding some optional details ... oars and rowlocks to hold them in place for rowing!
Almost done with this set. Just have to add weathering effects and then it's on the path towards release :)
-
The Faering, the third set in my Viking Fleet Builder series is out now!
Here are a couple of pics of the final weathered builds.
