I had a giftcard from a rebate for a tire purchase and was looking for something new to try out. I remembered playing Triumph a few years back at a Fall In! so decided to give it a shot. These are 15mm Polybian Romans. The casting on the pilum left a lot to be desired so I decided to give them my "Warmaster High Elf" treatment and convert them up. The hafts are brass tube with a small pin tip glued into them. I them added a block of plasticard as the weight and shaped it with a knife.

The rest were pretty much stock, except for some spear and javelin swaps on the Triarii and Velites. I just need to finish building the cavalry then it's on to painting.

Very exciting project! Can't wait to see more.
-
I started off my Polybian Romans with not painting any Romans at all, but Cretan Archers. I'll be using these as skirmishers. These are closer to true 15mm than the Romans (more 18mm). I'm telling myself that the Romans were just better fed.

I like 'em, they look great.
Now if they only can shoot straight!
-
I've been working on the Velites these past few weeks. Most of the colors have their basecoat down and I'm halfway through painting the red.

Very nice.
The club where I game has quite a few guys who know a lot about ancients and they play Triumph!...
and they all seem to enjoy it.
-
It seems big down in Maryland in the US, I haven't seen anyone playing up in Massachusetts yet. My buddy has some Tibetans (you know, Rome's ancient enemy) so hopefully we'll get a game in sometime. If not, maybe I can squeeze a tournament in at a HMGS show.
-
Nice work! Which manufacturer made the figures that you then improved?
-
They're Khurasan's Punic War line.
-
I finished up the Velites tonight, the line infantry also has their basecoat of red down as well. I have a small local con coming up where I volunteered to run some Warmaster games so I'm going to take a break from these for a bit to finish up some 10mm terrain. Hopefully I'll be back to painting them in September.

-
Absolutely cracking :D Looking forward to seeing more! What rules do you intend to use for these?
-
Thanks Arche. I'm using them for TRUIMPH!, I'll be making magnetic bases that I can drop them into. They're based individually incase I want to try a skirmish rule set (looking at Clash of Spears for that).
-
I think I started these Romans two weeks ago. They take a bit more time and effort than the WW2 Americans, I think it's the red and metalics. I have their shields yet to do, but I wanted to clear coat them first as the shield covers so much of the figure.

Your figures look just great.
-
So glad to see these are being worked on still - utterly gorgeous miniatures (oh how I wish Khurasan had a UK distributor! :( ), and your work on them is absolutely fantastic. I'm really looking forward to seeing some group shots of these all together! :-* :-*
-
Thanks guys.
@major, me too. I'll likely get back to them in late December or January, I have some 6mm sci-fi I want to work on next for the EpiComp painting competition at the end of the year.
-
Just as an observation, I play DBA3, I will never play TRIUMPH because those guys basically ripped off Phil Barker.
They are relying on the difficulty and cost to bring an action in a US court for a UK citizen to thumb their noses. If they were Chinese, you would all be calling them pirates.
-
Not looking to get into a shouting match over rules, just showing off the Romans for entertainment and inspiration. If that's your hill to die on, more power to you. I see it no differently than anyone else's homebrew rules though.
Language can be copywritten, mechanics cannot. Given how much has been added to the system between the different troop types, combat result exceptions and terrain generation, plus the complete overhaul of the language itself, I couldn't see any case holding water.
-
Wow! Those Romans are really cool.
-
Yeah, beautiful figures. I’m looking forward to seeing them with their shields.
-
Back to the Romans! I finsihed up my Triarii this week and also spent some time putting together bases for everything.

Now I have usable units for Triumph! and can use the figures in a skirmish game as well. Next up is the Principes, cavalry and then I need to figure out the shields. I'm looking at some sort of decal at this point.

Lovely work! I'm glad to more of your progress on these. :)

Nice progress!
-
Are these khurasan?
Nice little force you got
-
Thanks guys. They are, LoxIslay.
-
Nice work.
-
I finished up my principes for a game of Triumph! this Saturday. I should be able to get them some bases by then too. I need to start figuring out what I'm going to do for all their shields. I'll probably track down some design and make decals for them.

Good progress

Looking really nice!

Thanks guys.
These Roman Extraordinarii kind of came along for the ride as I was working on the Principes. They just needed a bit more work that I completed tonight. I also finished up the bases for them and the Principes too.

Really nice work - I always get excited when I see you've updated this thread! :)
I assume that you're going to dress up the bases all together at the end with some greenery and/ or areas of rough ground?
-
Impressive soldiers.
-
Thanks guys.
@major, yes. I got a custom printed fleece blanket which I'd like to match with flock. Woodland Scenics isn't going to do it so I'm looking at some other flocks from Scenic Express.
I'm hoping to tackle shields next, I've got some decal paper and liquid film for that so we'll see how it goes.
-
I spent this week cleaning, priming and glueing shields on the Triarii, Principes and Extraordinarii. I also painted up the Triarii's shields. I glazed one in the recesses to tone down the shading, not sure if I like it yet. Thoughts? I don't know why I spent so much time on the figures, the shields cover 80% of the detail.

Personally, I really like the effect. :)

Sounds like just the sort of thing I do! lol
-
I don't know why I spent so much time on the figures, the shields cover 80% of the detail.
The dilemma of every ancient Roman player ever :)
Nice white shields though!
-
In reference to the shields covering up your good work.
I always recall an interview with an actress from the old "Gone with the Wind" movie. The women wore full period authentic dresses with full undergarments. One day she turned to the director to complain of why they had to wear these items as the audience would never see them. He turned to her and said "You will know they were there."
So you would always know how good they are behind the shields. ;)
-
So what I'm getting out of this is I should keep wearing the Roman undergarments while I paint as it's character building?
-
I was wondering if red tunics were really uniform in Polybian armies or were they perhaps less homogenous, either within a small unit, such as a maniple , where individuals might have different kit and colored tunics or all the way up to maybe the whole legion being uniform, or somewhere in between? Do we have historical sources or is just a wargaming conventional practice to make them a uniform red.
-

Uniform would be highly unlikely, as soldiers supplied their own kit. No actual evidence either way of course. I suspect not even shield designs were uniform at this point but we wargamers do love our uniformed Romans.
-
Work continues on the shields. I finished them for the Principes and Extraordinarii this week. On to the Hastati next.

The curse of my curious monkey ancestors is that I have now googled "ancient Roman undergarments", how did it come to this? :'(
Subligaculum by the way.
-
Wow! Great updates and first nice looking bases!

Thanks for that, good to know when I show up sometime with Romans in blue and run into a heckling pedant. stillwith very individualized kit I try to make units have a bit of common colour, even take up to later periods like feudals. It helps to just make a stand easier to remember which command it was assigned to when commands get intermingled, even if I have grown weary of my opponent reminding me that my blue command has run out if pips so that new hole in my line cannot be filled!
-

Roman soldiers supplied their own kit? Really? Other than pre Punic Wars when every citizen soldier was expected to bring their own armour, I would be very interested to find the sources for this, I don't recall Sumner or Goldsworthy mentioning it. I think it was mentioned that one Roman commander realised his (Roman) opponent had been reinforced due to the new shields of one of his legions.
-
Pretty sure that even new but individualized shields would still be easy to tell from old weathered and battle scarred but still individually decorated shields that had been on campaign for a while. New troops in fresh kit would be pretty obvious…especially if you had seen the others before. Tunics and armour other than shields might be more individual and still have uniform shields or shield decoration. I wouldn’t rule it out even if there is no source one way or the other.
by the way the figs here that got me wondering are pretty sweetly done, uniform or not!

it was noted at a distance, it was one of the primary sources that indicates that different legions had different shields. You would need to be pretty close to determine that shields were new rather than different.
-
That does make a bit of sense, but knowing how pigments fade, i wouldn’t be surprised to be able to tell older pastel bleached colors from new even from a distance. Gaping chunks of scarred wood or leather too are we talking a mile away or just a few 100 yds?

Roman soldiers supplied their own kit? Really? Other than pre Punic Wars when every citizen soldier was expected to bring their own armour, I would be very interested to find the sources for this, I don't recall Sumner or Goldsworthy mentioning it. I think it was mentioned that one Roman commander realised his (Roman) opponent had been reinforced due to the new shields of one of his legions.
My understanding is that the state didn't begin issuing kit until the time of Marius. Happy to be shown evidence to the contrary of course. It's been a while since I read up on this stuff.

The Hastatus shields are done as of tonight. I've got four bases of cavalry to do next, then everything needs some top coats and basing.

looking good.
-
Very nice! :)
I see you abandoned the lower shading on the shields then...?
-
It's there, just not as pronounced. I may hit them again as I work on the cavalry this coming week.
-
The cavalry conversions got finished up this week, and they got primed and based as well.

I also had this Cretan leader type hanging around so I painted him up too. Not sure what he's going to be used for yet.

“Have anyone seen a platoon of archers around here someplace? I must find them because I am their leader…”
Incentive to paint up a new squad. No wasted figures…ever! All must get on the table.
-
That model is stunning! He would not look out of place in an adventuring party! Great paintjob.
-
A few runes and he'd be good to head into the Big Rubble.
-
Thanks guys.
I've been working on the Roman cavalry these past weeks and finished up the Equites (aside for the shields) tonight.

Very nice. And on sabot bases too. Especially like the fringes on the saddle cloth. Nice attention to detail.
-
Lovely work - well done! 👍
-
Thanks guys.
I finally finished the horses for my 15mm Polybian Roman allied cavalry this week. I still need to do the shields for them, but that's going to involve a conversion as I don't have enough of the two types to split them how I like for easy unit identifcation.
