Title: Sailors for AWI?
Post by: v_lazy_dragon on June 27, 2022, 01:32:57 PM
Hi Folks,

New to the AWI period, and I want to start off doing some skirmishes based around Patriot Privateer raids in Nova Scotia (& what would become New Brunswick).

Looking about, there don't appear to be any dedicated ranges of AWI Sailors although a couple seem to exist for the FIW. These look to be:

Galloping Major - Extensive, good mix of options. But by my understanding are at the large end of 28mm and are likely to dwarf any opposition I end up getting?

Crann Tara - Smaller selection, probably still enough for my purposes, but are at the opposite end of 28mm and if anything might be little small compared to Perry/Brigade?

Northstar - Do a set of FIW/AWI sailors with muskets and have a set of 18th C sailors in the seven seas range. I have the 7 seas sailors (Somewhere!) and they seem to run large? I am guessing the M&T figures will match the others in the range and mid 'mid-28mm' size?

Eureka - Although not Sailors, they do some Marbleheaders who actually took part in some early privateer raids and would make for a good addition.

Have I missed anyone?
Are there any AWI lines that would fit well with GM? (I am happy to shave some bases on GM/use boosters on Perry/etc). Apparently the Redoubt AWI figures are awful?
Are Crann Tara as super tiny as they look?
Are the Eureka Marbleheaders also the usual 'near 25mm' that most Eureka models are, or would they also fit Perry/etc?

The Perry's southern militia would probably work okay. They also do the Ethiopian regiment who fought for the British and were equipped by the Royal Navy.

The Eureka AWI figures I have match Perry almost exactly.

Old Glory does a pack of 30 AWI naval crews:

and some of their other naval crew packs might work as well:

Thanks folks - I had thought about the Perry southern militia, but great thought on the Ethiopians!

Good one with the OG sailors. Do we know how big they are? I have had OG figures run from 25mm to BIG 28mm

The Foundry  range probably has a few useful figures, but my feeling is that some of them are a bit early/hollywood?

I have the Old Glory "naval crew with swivel guns" pack and they are definitely 28mm.  They are a little more bulky than Perry, probably closer sizewize to Foundry or Brigade Games
