As soon as this game was anounced I pre-ordered it. Love the miniatures, terrain and game concept. And all the parts come as HIPS, so nice and strong plastic, produced by IMO one of the best producers of HIPS (Archon games).
So time to start painting then. I started with Orko and Merman. Both were painted in my standard way: coat everything with thick layers of Contrast paint and then add extra shading and highlights. The vibrant and strong colours of the Contrast paint works perfecly for this game, you want bold and powerful colours. All in all about 5 hours of painting, which is quite fast for me. And I'm happy with the results.
Orko

Merman

Now working on Stratos, Man-At-Arms and Trap Jaw. Dunked in Contrast so time for some shades and highlights!
-
Great start keen to see the other pieces...
-
Wow! Beautiful miniatures and I‘m amazed and intrigued by your painting style.
Do you first do a white layer or paint the contrast paints directly on the minis?
-
Nice work!
-
They look great
I too would like to know more about how you are using contrast paints

quite - great result with the Merman figure. Wouldn't have guessed contrast paints were involved.

Thanks lads! Yesterday it was time for...Man-At-Arms!

And about my method of using Contrast paints. Normally I prime my miniatures zenithally (so first with black and then white from above and at a 45 degrees angle) but this time I airbrushed them pure white. I then coat them in Contrast paints until all surfaces are covered. I usually apply it very thick and use a hair dryer to speed up drying time. But make sure to blow from a distance, or else you might push the pigments around with the air flow.
Here you can see my next two: Stratos and Trap Jaw.
As you can see you have a great start with these paints. There is a nice vibrant and strong shade and midtone and often some subtle highlights too. For the speedpainters this should suffice for gaming I think. I used the following colours:
Stratos: Blood Angels Red (wings, belt and helmet), Talassar Blue (feathers and backpack), Darkoath Flesh (face), Nighthaunt Gloom + Contrast medium and Gryph-charger Grey + Contrast Medium (skin), Wyldwood + Contrast medium (base)
Trap Jaw: Black Templar (legs, right arm, strip on helmet, shoulder piece, left arm), Talassar Blue (skin), Flesh Tearers Red (helmet and loincloth), Warp Lightning + Contrast medium (face, belt, left arm, green things on the legs), Shyish Purple (base), Wyldwood (roots on the base)
With Stratos I used Contrast medium with the greys to make sure he woulnd't be too dark.
If you have other questions, let me know :)
-
Thanks for the explanations. That’s really interesting and very good results!
-
yep, great info - and fantastic results.
-
And the next: Stratos. You could see the Contrast only version above...here he is with some highlights applied.

And next up is Trap Jaw.

Pretty cool!
Thanks to you I ordered the game yesterday. ;D

-
Love that old skull. I’m actually just right now quickpainting the Quest Miniatures MotU series to idle away the time until the game areives! lol
-
And the next one finished...Trap Jaw! Such a silly design. But a lot of fun to paint with the garish colours.
Next will be Triclops.
-
Wow. He came out nicely! :o
If you think about the later designs (Looking atyou Rock People!), Trap Jaw is actually quite serious. He would not feel out of place in the 41st Millennium or a certain Steampunk Fantasy Wargame… just saying.
-
Keen to also see what you do with the MOTU Battleground terrain pieces and of course the main protagonists.
What are your thoughts on the game itself and rule mechanics?
-

Yeah, the IP has some totally silly designs, but I'm all up for it! Can't wait for stuff like Stinkor, Mekaneck and such. Did you see the MOTU episode of 'The Toys that Made Us' on Netflix? Pure gold...I laughed so hard.

For the terrain probably zenithal priming, some thinned contrast layers, some weird washes, drybrushes and then picking out the details.
I haven't played the game yet, but from what I read in the book and online it sounds great! Similar to Underworlds but I think it's better and a bit less random. But I hope to play soon!
-
Next up: Triclops! Also a ridiculous design, but it was a lot of fun to paint him. And now 6 done, so getting closer to finishing the core box.
Already started with Ram Man.
-
Awesome - really like the way his sword and eyes came out. What is the green thing on the base? Looks like a small creature?
Could you also do a group shot at some point?
Also, what orange are you using? I have been struggling to find that sort of shade of vibrant He-Man toy orange? Orange, is for some reason, it seems, one colour I hardly ever use...
-
Silly, but also awesome! :o
Your painting is excellent again. You certainly have the power! What did you use on the skin? Is that also contrast paint?
Btw - haven’t watched said episode, but now it’s on my list.
-
Looking good :)
I have this myself, trying to decide when to get to it. So many projects...
You are doing it justice! And that Toys that Made us was a great one. I actually like the whole series, really neat stuff to discover.

Thanks! The stuff on his base are some kind of weird crashed drone, almost like a mini zeppelin. And there's a small radar dish and a computer or something.
Group shot will be done of course! Probably once I finish all ten.
For the orange I start with Gryph-Hound Orange Contrast over a white primer. I highlight this with AK Deep Orange and then AK Deep Orange + AK Deep Yellow. But...I'd rather have a lighter and brighter orange colour from the bottle than this mix. This works, but having a lighter and brighter one would be way more convenient. But it would have helped if I did the same recipe I used on Man-At-Arms, by mixing in Fluorescent Orange to the highlights. Then you really get a great vibrant and popping orange.
Silly, but also awesome! :o

Cheers! For the skin I started with Darkoath Flesh Contrast...but I didn't like it. I wanted a deeper and richer skin colour. So I covered it all with P3 Bloodstone, a nice warm orangey brown. For highlights I used a mix of AK Medium Flesh + AK Tan Earth and then I used AK Basic Flesh for a highlight and finally I mixed in some AK White to the AK Basic Flesh for the final bright touches.
Looking good :)

Thank you! Yeah, we're all never bored by a lack of projects eh ;). But this sure is a nice one. Excellent plastic models and the colour schemes are just a ton of fun to do!
-
And another day...another model! Probably the only positive thing about getting caught with corona...
Ram Man
(https://paintoholic.nl/images/ramman1.jpg)
Another great silly design and before painting I really dreaded all that model. But in the end he was a blast to do, I loved doing everything. Maybe the best one so far for me.
Next up Evil-Lyn!
-
Yeah, the IP has some totally silly designs, but I'm all up for it! Can't wait for stuff like Stinkor, Mekaneck and such. Did you see the MOTU episode of 'The Toys that Made Us' on Netflix? Pure gold...I laughed so hard.
I watched it yesterday. And it’s really a fun eide. My constant laughing even brought my wife to the TV and she joined me. The episode definitely is a blast. Especially when you imagine all these guys in the 80s trying to seriously get people interested in the silly awesomeness of motu. My favorite was the evil grumpy artist. I’m sure a lot of things in MotU are just there because everyone was afraid to ask him for changes in his work!
-
Yeah, it was so cool to see these guys thinking up the crasiest stuff and making millions...until She-Ra was released...lol
And the next one is done too: Evil-Lyn! A rather fast and a bit rushed, but good enough I think. And of course with the typical yellow skin she has in the cartoons.
So only He-Man and Skeletor left! Oh, and a ton of scenery...but first the to main heroes to tackle.
-
I was never keen on Ram Man but the mini they have done does make him look much better than the original toy - he has a Roman Centurion sort of feel.
Whereas Evil-Lyn was always one of my favourites yet the mini just does not look as good as I hoped.
-
Evil-Lyn is pretty cool! What did you use for the skin? Contrast paint? Looks a bit like Nazdreg yellow.
-

Yeah I understand, the pose is a bit weird. But also from the 8 I did I think this is the poorest paintjob. That doesn't help her either ;)
And yeah, Ram Man looks menacing now...instead of the dumb doofus he often was in the cartoons lol
Evil-Lyn is pretty cool! What did you use for the skin? Contrast paint? Looks a bit like Nazdreg yellow.
Thanks! It's Iyanden Yellow. I thought the Nazdreg Yellow would be too dark for her. I higlighted the skin with Scale75 Sahara Yellow and then some more highlights by mixing in AK Ice Yellow and Ak White. I think I highlighted her too much...something I often do with female skin. It's one of the things why I like painting males a lot more, they have better defined muscles and you can do more intense shading and highlights than on females.
-
Thanks!
I’m currently painting through the set myself. Very enjoyable in more than one respect.
Concerning the sculpts: well some are not the best, but the scale is consistent - what can not be said about the aftermarket sellers - the quality of the casting is on eye level with GW, and I’m pretty sure we’ll see alternatives once the game has become a success.
Any plans on what to use for Castle Grayskull? I’ve been surfing the net yesterday. The old toy set is available relatively cheap if you don’t insist on a mint condition, there’s also the Origin set currently available for €60 at a German drugstore chain and the crown jewel the pricy and rare Icon set. CMON apparently are producing another set for their version of Motu, but as with the rest of the sculpts, I’m not happy with it.
-
The whole IP thing is such a mess...it's a shame CMON can do the USA and Archon Studio can do Europe. And both releasing different games and ideas. So odd. But it is what it is. At least I am glad that Archon doesn't use PVC! I can work with the material, but HIPS is soooooo much nicer to work with.
For the castle, a fellow gamer created a 3D model and he also printed and painted it. Here's the model:
https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/masters-of-the-universe-castle-greyskull
I've seen his painted model in the MOTU: B group on facebook and it looks very cool!
He also created a token holder:

Brilliant work all round.
This subject matter marries perfectly with your painting style, they were just made for you!
:-* :-*
The only downside is that you are not helping me resist this He-Man nonsense in the slightest!
>:( >:( ;)
-
Awesome! ;D
Now I don’t have a 3D printer sadly… :(
Totally agree on the mess they created with the IP, but when both KS were launched, I was zero interested in the CMON one, because of their usual recipe of throwing tons of soft plastics which arrive so late that I (and assumedly others) have lost all interest… Still waiting for Trudvang where I made the mistake again…
Archon’s KS got very poor reviews but the sculpts looked way better. When they released them in hard plastic that was a no-brainer. Like you I really enjoy painting metal and hard plastic minis.

Cheers man! And yeah, they paint up so fast with my painting method and they are so much fun. Loving the whole process!

"I, Skeletor, Master of the Universe, have awakened you!" - Skeletor
Awesome! ;D

You can find people who print for money...some more expensive than others. But this castle should be doable. Maybe not cheap with all the plastic involved.

It's interesting to see both games. Archon's looks more of a Risk-type of game while CMON's seems more of a skirmish style game. At first I was sad we didn't get a skirmish type game in Europe...but then Battlegrounds was released! And the best parts for if you get both games is that you can use the models from Battlegrounds in Fields of Eternia. So once the game drops I can play almost fully painted already. Really looking forwards to that one.
-
Yes! I have the same idea!!!!!
-
By the power of Grayskull...I HAVE THE POWER!
Or in other words, He-Man is finished! Cool model to paint and the pose is awesome. I struggled to get the face the way I wanted, but it's fine as it is now. So that only leaves Skeletor! The big baddie has been coated in Contrast colours, so should be easy to do. And then it's time for group shots!

I would second the Icon Heroes castle as the best option, but since it's OOP for some time, prices are way up from when I got mine.

As castles go it should be an easy one to scratch build - but the old toy one can also be turned into a suitable piece. It was always too small for the original toys and based on how big it looks in some of the cartoons might be ideal for 25mm upwards...
I would imagine that one could scrap the hex element of the Battlegrounds game and use more flexible measuring and thus allow for more exciting terrain features like Greyskull...
Like the He-Man addition, he matches the rest of your forces well. See you are keeping the best to last. Look forward to seeing Skeletor, hope you make him your best...
-
Some lovely work on these minis :-*

Cracking paintjob. You truly have the POWER!!!
@ White Knight: Seeing your excellent painted minis in those bloody brilliant Icon statues makes me regret having sold my time machine….
-
It's really cool seeing all these MotU threads. Lovely painting.
-
Cheers lads!
And the main box is...DONE! At least the models that is ;)
Skeletor
(https://paintoholic.nl/images/skeletor1.jpg)
Such a cool model to paint. And a very easy colour scheme too, so went nice and fast.
And as promised some group shots:

For now it's prepping the scenery for paint and wait until the next wave will be delivered. Can't wait for Scareglow!
-
It's really cool seeing all these MotU threads. Lovely painting.
For the past few days, any visit to this subforum leaves me with "I HAVE THE POWWERRRRRRRRRR" followed by the theme song inevitably stuck in my head. lol
-
Well done - do think Merman and Men at Arms came out best. They look great all together. So, now the terrain?
-
Cool!!! ;D ;D
What colors did you use gor Skeletor? The purple and the skin are really spot on.
-
Cool!!! ;D ;D
What colors did you use gor Skeletor? The purple and the skin are really spot on.
Cheers man! The purple is first Shyish Purple Contrast. I first added some deep and rich shading with AP Purple Wash + Scale75 Inktense Blue and highlighted with Foundry Royal Purple B, Royal Purple C and Royal Purple C + AK Ice Yelow. The blue is Talassar Blue Contrast, highlighted with Scale75 Sky Blue, Sky Blue + white and then glazed with AK Fluorescent Blue. Seems like a lot of steps, but it's quite fast to do.
-
Thank you!
I really love what you are doing here. The paintjobs may be fast, but they are so evocative of the toys. Awesome!
-
Fantastic work, you sure moved through them quick!
Reminds me of the ancient times when a box game could come out, and I'd have an army painted in a week lol
-
Thanks lads! And finally a new model, from wave 1. It's Sorceress. Great model, lovely to paint...but that face is so tiny, that sure was difficult!
Next up will be Scareglow...probably my favourite sculpt from the whole bunch!
-
Another great addition she looks good - especially like the way the staff came out too.
-
Cheers! Happy with the whites too. The trick was to take Black Templar Contrast and heavily dilute it with Contrast Medium. Two coats and you have a great coat over white. Some white highlights and done
-
Next one done: Scare Glow! What a fantastic sculpt and what a joy to paint. So much fun with the bright colours, weird body and his great cape. Loved doing him!
-
That is cool! :-*
-
Cheers Elk!
And the next one done, in about two hours. Nice and fast. It's Beast Man! I also received wave 2 some days ago, so I also got the very cool dinosaur with laser to do!
-
Beastman looks great, but Scareglow is simply breathtaking! Awesome model, excellent painting!!! :o :o :-*
-
Love the new additions - the Beastman sculpt itself I find a bit disappointing, but he has come out well...
-
Cheers! Yeah, Scare Glow is such a cool sculpt and it's great to mess around with fluorescents on him. Beast Man is...okay as a sculpt. But still, I like he is so different from all of the other models. But I would have preferred a sculpt with the infamous whip in action.
-
absolutely flipping fantastic (yet again Malebolgia!) - love it all - and I'm too old etc to know anything about the cartoon series etc :D
-
Absolutely love the paints jobs on these
-
Thanks guys!!
And the next one done...the fabulous Tyrantisaurus! A T-Rex with a laser, a frigging laser...the dream of every child. And once again so much fun to paint. An epic sculpt and the casting in HIPS is just perfect. Loved every part of him.
And a shot with a regular 30mm model to show its size better.
-
Jawsome! ...and as you say a frigging lazer...
-
What’s better than a Tyrannosaurus Rex? :o ???
I friggon‘ T-Rex with Laser guns!!! ;D lol :-*
Great paintjob!
-
I picked the starter up recently- no mean feat as I'm in the US. Good news is that all of the plastic is outstanding. Malebolgia's paint jobs are doing a great job of showing off how nice the models really are :)
Bad news is if I want to get more of the models it's going to cost me! ;D
Hopefully CMoN's MotU game components will look good enough next to the Archon ones. If so, I can download the rules for the new expansions and use those minis.
-
T-Rex is the first animal I think of when considering who needs an exo-skeleton :D
Great paint job on all of the minis!
-
Thanks guys! Next one's finished too: Teela! Not my favourite sculpt and model to paint, so glad she's finished. Now it's time to get the terrain painted. I have the full terrain set from wave 2 primed and ready for the paint (the lava and cave terrain), looking forward to doing crazy lava stuff with the airbrush.
-
I really like that one and eagerly look forward to the terrain.
-
It may not have been fun to paint, but you certainly made that figure look good!
-
Oh, even if you don’t like her, she still is very cool!!!
-
Cheers lads! I think it's the abundance of gold that felt off. And I really like painting male miniatures a lot more than females, due to their more defined muscularity <insert Heroquest joke ;) >
-
Teela looks great. I see that Archon ensured that Teela kept her thick (or thicc, as the kids say on social media these days) thighs :D
-
just wonderful stuff.
-
Really nice work, the variation in the skin color is super cool.
-
Cheers lads! And the fun continues...now with wave 2 fully done! It took some time to get all the scenery done, but it was a lot of fun with the lava and fossils. I did have some issues with too thick paint in my airbrush at the last step, so you can see some slight speckling. But it's okay for me. The best thing is I now have a fully painted set to play with! Of course I still have the scenery from the core box left, but I felt this scenery was just way cooler. And now on to wave 3!

Not huge on He-Man stuff, but that's all really, really well done. I particularly like the skin tones on Teela.
-
Thanks! Although I don't really have a lot of childhood memories of He-Man, I do love the miniatures and it's so much fun to paint them as bright as possible with a lot of saturated colours. A lot different than most other projects I have (like Bloodborne lol). And it fits my current painting way of using lots of Contrasts.
-
Bloody lovely stuff.
I have the entire range, but it had been collecting dust since I was focussen to get another project finished in time for an event.
I did got distracted by a "quick" painting of the scenery from the starter box.
Took me way longer than planned off course, but I really enjoyed the process.
Now I have He-man and the tradeshow He-man and Battlecat on my table.
I really enjoy painting the cartoony colours ( NMM not withstanding)
They are great models and those last pictures of yours, all painted up amongst painted scenery are truelly inspiring.
The lave looks killer.
-
The lava scenery is superb too, the dark grey and bright orange/yellow contrast is grand :-*
-
Thanks guys!

Can't wait to see your paintjobs on them! Maybe He-Man at the next Poldercon...?
The lava scenery is superb too, the dark grey and bright orange/yellow contrast is grand :-*
Cheers! I did went back to them after airbrushing because I thought the contrast was too low. So I added a good black wash to all stone parts and I think the contrast is a lot better this way. So it's great to read your comment, because that is exactly what I aimed for!
-
Wahooooo! That terrain is just awesome. Very atmospheric and nice contrasts. :-* I love it!
-
Cheers man! :)
-
Terrain looks fantastic very atmospheric I would imagine it would be hard to paint up and make look this good without an airbrush.
-
Thanks!! And yeah...can't imagine doing this or enjoying painting it without an airbrush... o_o
-
Next up...the Master of Odors...Stinkor!
Love the idea behind Stinkor and the model is very cool too. He was a lot of fun to paint and went rather fast. Like with Man-At-Arms I used fluorescent paints to up the vibrancy on the orange and I like how he turned out.
And I also did some of the scenery that came with the expansions: the Gas Cannister, the Teleporters and a big crater.

Great job with the eyes and fur in particular, this is my favourite so far 8) 8) 8)
-
Oh my God! He’s awesome!
Stinkor: He stinks and destroys!
-
Looks groovy.
Maybe I need to look into those fluorescent colours.
I'm really looking forward to the Hord expansion.
Curious how they play and the Hord trooper was a figure I always wanted, but never owned, as a kid.
-
Phew!
-
Great job with the eyes and fur in particular, this is my favourite so far 8) 8) 8)
Cheers! I really wanted to paint this guy, because the whole concept is so silly. And he did not disappoint!
Oh my God! He’s awesome!
Stinkor: He stinks and destroys!
Thanks man! And hopefully his smelly powers work cool too in the game.
Looks groovy.
Maybe I need to look into those fluorescent colours.
I'm really looking forward to the Hord expansion.
Curious how they play and the Hord trooper was a figure I always wanted, but never owned, as a kid.
Thanks! Fluos are excellent if you want to give your colours extra oomph. For oranges, reds, blues, yellows, greens and magentas they are fantastic. And it works well to get that bright toy-like look.
And I saw a preview pic of the Horde yesterday in Archon's live chat...looks gorgeous!
Phew!
Pass the Deodorant!
And the next one is finished! It is...
Man-E-Faces
That outfit! The colour scheme! The dull pose! The silly orange water pistol!

It's the ultimate 80s toy and I really wanted to paint this guy. And although blue is my least favourite colour to paint, I am very happy with him. And once again, lots of fluorescents to up the vibrancy. What a cool model to paint! Next will be Buzz-Off!

Love him! And totally right. He’s among the best Masters ever released and his design is so stupid that it’s actually a stroke of genius!
-
Everything in here is fantastically bonkers, I'd forgotten just how silly Masters of Universe was. Love all the paintjobs, I think beastman is my favourite. The contrast colours - which I normally find a bit oversaturated - are perfect for these. Great stuff..
-
Lovely crisp and bright.
It is indeed extremelt 80's
-
Cheers lads! Yeah, Contrast is fantastic for that bright saturated 80s look. I'm also using it on my 15mm sci-fi to get that retro sci-fi look and it works so well.

This is the joy of Masters of the Universe in a nutshell- especially after the cartoon came out, it was an unabashedly crazy magi-tech setting, where Rule of Cool, or at least Rule of Far Out (man!), was the main reason for everything.
Stinkor is one of my favorite minor characters; the rest of Skeletor's crew avoid him because the poor guy can't turn it off. He smells so bad that he needs his own tech to help him not gag on his own odo(u)r. His backstory is wonderful dark comedy.
I am looking forward to getting my copy of CMoN's take on the game (the one exception to my usual "no more CMoN Kickstarters" rule).

It was actually your thread here that made me go all in with Contrast paints and also Acceptably in the 80s Chaos works brilliantly with then.

The Contrast adventure continues with Buzz-Off!. Awesome silly design and a real treat to paint. I'm still impressed with how stable the model is considering he is only connected to the base with part of his foot! Great design

Only Whiplash left! And that's a good thing for wave 4 is supposed to be delivered tomorrow! Whoop whoop!
-
That's nice! I'm loving seeing these on the forum.
-
Gosh, I never liked him but he has come out really well. Awesome job.
-
Buzz-off Buzz!! One of the last and one of my favorite MotU characters! I remember he had claws instead of hands and couldn’t hold *anything* in it, especially no weapons lol lol
An excellent paintjob as usual. I’m always impressed just how good contrast paints on those models work. You continue to have the POWER!
-
Oh, Dang. He looks amazing.
Stellar job on the yellow and NMM effects.
I just ordered wave 4. Including the Hordak on Mantisaurus model.
I have the other ones. Figure all leaders need a mounted version.
Very curious how the new faction plays.
-
Cheers lads! It's a great character to paint...I don't do yellow a lot so that was something new and fresh :)
-
Superb, he came out well - the wings are a treat! 8)
-
Yeah, the wings were a lot of fun to do. Contrast > drybrush > Edge highlight > glazing some Contrast around the shades. Fast and effective :)
And the next -and for now last- model of the range is done...the man in green: Whiplash! Cool model. Not very flashy or wild, but he has a nice colour palette to work with.

That finishes all of the current models! Tomorrow I will receive wave 4, with Hordak and co so the fun will of course continue. Here's a shot of everything I did so far:

This is stunning, love your work! ... and the group shot is out of this world

continuing to get fantastic results. :-*

And a new addition...although technically not from Battlegrounds. It is the stretch goal freebie from the Fields of Eternia kickstarter. Yes, once again Archon Studio did something totally silly: add a free HIPS dice tower to the pledge. Homongous, heavy and totally awesome. Lots of fun to paint and easy too. And although made for Fields of Eternia, of course it will be used in Battlegrounds as well!

Some form of Grayskull Castle is already on my overextended to-do list.
Might just be a backdrop or STL print, But ofcourse I need a physical representation to go with my mini's

I have.
It might be an option as a base for the build. I might also do an entire scratchbuild.
