Title: Explorer in Cooking Pot
Post by: Doug ex-em4 on June 29, 2022, 10:44:21 PM
I’m sure I’ve seen a figure of this stereotypical Darkest Africa theme but I can’t remember who made it. Can anyone help?

Presumably a manufacturer whose sense of humour was stuck firmly in the ‘Carry On’ era and for whom casual racism, depicting Africans as savage cannibals, was not an issue. Maybe look for firms that were around in the 1970s/ ‘80s? Should be easy to find, it will be the range with grotesquely large lips and bones in the noses.

Pleeease ...pleease CM could you save us this out of place, sanctimonious sermon ?  :o o_o o_o :o..are you aware that is summer ..is very hot and we are in a hobby and wargame related amusing  forum and that  we are simply talking about lead toy miniatures? ..
By the way is untrue that you have to look only for 1970's or vintage type  castings...Old Glory makes one  in their Darkest Africa Range and another one in their Pirate Range..see "captured pirates"...said that, as i did'nt need to buy a full set from USA, i planned to do my "STEREOTYPICAL"  set with just a plastic miniature pot that you can easily find at boot markets among crates of toys remains and an explorer minis cut at waist height.

Masterful brushwork on the figure in the pot!

I made one of my own. The pot is a papermaché ball, body of a native warrior, head with helmet from some colonial:

That was a step too far. If you can't keep it civil then do not post. Both sides have said their piece, any more of this sort of thing and the topic will be locked.

Brilliant.  I must get him.  Great figure and painting.  That look of utter disdain is priceless.  :)

Thanks for the helpful replies - the Antediluvian one is the one I was remembering, although Michi’s is excellent and I may go that route.

Indeed. The recorded examples of cannibalism in Africa are few and almost certainly on par with the rest of the world. As a cultural practice it’s even rarer, just as it elsewhere in the world.

The white man in the cooking pot is a racist trope. It’s intention, thinking or otherwise, and most certainly its effect is to depict Africans as savage beasts. File along with depictions of people of African descent eating water melons, blacking boots etc, etc.

Why anyone would want to persist with this depiction is beyond me. You know if the entertainment world can give up ‘black face’, corporation's can give up flogging food with depictions of black ‘mammies’ on the label and most reasonable people have stopped using racist invective, I’m pretty sure it won’t hurt the odd wargamer to think about the trope. It’s not even a funny gag, it wasn’t even in the day of Bob Hope.

Okay, the point has been more than well-made at this point. Let's drop it now please. However you may feel about this topic, it isn't against the forum rules, but turning it into a political discussion is.

Fair enough although the desire to reply is strong. We’ll allow CM the last word on this - it’s obviously very important to him to broadcast his views.

Some great painting on display but don't like any of the miniatures for historicity etc reasons and consideration of how I want to represent my hobbying.

As the main protagonists of this nonsense can't rein in their desire to have the last word let me make it plain: If you want to discuss the rights and wrongs of Doug's request, go and do it somewhere else. This isn't the place.

Further posts debating this matter and/or taunting the other side will be removed just as the last one was.

Can we just stick to talking about wargaming? Everyone has different interests.
