Title: Humble Huts (wall madness 9.8.22)
Post by: Verderer on July 23, 2022, 04:05:30 PM
I painted these plastic Renedra huts, and added a base with some wattle fencing, or at least my attempt at making some... I used a kind of paper string for the wattling, it works ok, but I didn't consider, that it will soak paint like crazy. So I think it's best to use some white glue to saturate the string, so it won't take as much paint and bloat too much. I will work on the best method to use it. I think it will work ok.

I will add some static grass and bushes later, but other than that, these are ready... and I think I got me another four to paint someplace...

Nice work.  Wonder if a simple rattle can spray of primer might fix the 'soaking' paint problem?

I agree with the others on your fencing- it turned out excellent.

Thanks for the fencing idea, it looks very effective. I will give that a go, but might give it a pre-paint with thinned PVA to increase integrity and prime to reduce the soaking of paint.

Thanks People. Yes, the string method could do with a bit of refining. The type I got has two threads wound together, so I get two pieces from each length. I might try something like winding a thread a bit 'tighter' and stretching it up by tying it between two objects, then soaking it with PVA glue and let it set. That might make the thread  smaller in diameter AND saturate it with one go, so I could then apply it on between the posts... something like that???

You can make wattle fencing for me anytime.  ;)

Well, one thing lead to another.. I got this idea of making a field wtih wattle fence, then I thought it would cool to have some dry stone wall there too, and THEN i got the bright idea to build the walls from individual bits... o_o

So here's a couple of WIP pics before painting the ruddy thing. It started out as therapeutic experience, but towards the end I had nightmares of laying the stones. I can only recommend this for the most patient of minds. lol

As for the build, the bases and wall frames are plastic card. I added a little DAS clay to edge the bases. The wall itself is built out of Milliput bits. I first made some various sized sticks of Milliput, squished it against a board. When dry, I cut/broke each stick into tiny bits which I glued on the plastic wall frame with super glue. The top bits are a Noch product called something like Talus... it's easy to file the rocks as the material is very soft, almost like gipsum.

As you can see, the 'field' is split into two wedges that I can place in various combinations or separately, for that matter. Should be useful.

Gluing all those bits on must have been tedious, but the end result looks brilliant! I like your approach of building the fields in sections too, for the added versatility.
