I’ve decided to make a little corner yamashiro to show the potential of the new releases. The clear ‘gateway’ is an unfinished master that should be complete in a week or so.
It’s not based on any particular one (as there are hundreds, with more being discovered every year) but it should show various aspects of a typical yamashiro of the sengoku period.
The storehouse is actually the master as I’m waiting for a miscast (all the components are either miscasts of first pulls).
None of the walls are stuck together yet as I’ll be concentrating on the baseboard first. The earthen ‘bridges’ crossing the moat were a defence tactic as it concentrated the enemy when approaching the walls.
It’s three layers of 25mm foam. My boards are 50mm thick and the extra 25mm will give it some height. The roofs and watchtower will all be removable for ease of storage.
There will be some fencing in front of the gateway but that will become clear when I’ve roughed it out.

-
Thanks chaps :)
Hope to update at least once per week.
-
I like the blue, looks great. When will you release this one
-
That's looking great already, I love the level changes. I forsee this being a cracker!
-
Not a period I collect but a fantastic looking layout non the less.
-
Thanks again :)
When will you release this one
Silly man lol
-
nice start
-
Lovely work James. :-* :-* :-*
When will you release this one
In 15mm too of course... :D
-
So, the initial groundwork is done and the simple gateway is almost ready to mould. When I’ve got a first pull I can join it to the rest of the walls (which are now glued together) and start to paint them.
Once the walls are painted I can stick them to the base board, blend them in front and back and then finish the groundwork proper.
I’ll also be making some siege equipment; some of which might eventually become available in the webshop :)

Amazing! Love it. Well done as always mate.

You’ve been busy! The ground texture looks good. 8)

Thanks :)

This looks brilliant .... shame my samurai are 3mm tall :-)
WTB - Shrink Ray!

Cheers :)
A 3mm range is very doubtful but never say never :)

So, more progress on the yamashiro.
All the walls have been primed and given their base colour apart from the simple gateway which is being cast at the moment. Some of the wall sections have been stuck together to ease painting and the joins will be sorted once they've been stuck on place.
I need to coat the remaining blue foam surface with either glue, watered down filler or caulk just to make sure there's no resin off gassing that could cause damage to it (doubtful but best to be sure).
I'll try and make a start on the siege equipment this coming week.

Really excellent :)
-
really nice
-
Thanks chaps :)
-
It’s looking magnificent.
What was the purpose of the earthen bank ‘bridges’ that segregate the moat into sections?
-
Cheers :)
They were for two purposes, for support of the berm and also to channel troops into a smaller 'kill zone'.
Some of the larger yamashiro layouts were really quite extensive and intricate.

I suppose that another purpose might have been to limit attackers' movement around the walls - once some attackers were committed to a section of wall (and its pit), the berms would have hindered their movement to reinforce any gains further along the wall...
-
Well, I know where my reference photos will come from!
-
Started painting now. One joined section at a time and blended in as I go. Once they’re all on, blended and the ground work basecoat is on then I’ll add the groundwork colours. Doors and supports to do but I’ll add those nearer the end to help prevent clumsy fingers knocking them about :D

Nice to see it all coming together.
-
That’s a nice update. It’s interesting to look back and see what’s changed from the previous week.
-
Thanks :)
Progress is low but steady. The yagura is now finished, apart from a few interior details, more on which later. It's been stuck and blended into the surrounding groundwork. Photos of the inside when the details have gone in.
I've also made a few bamboo palisades from JA09 in the 28mm catalogue and will also be making some slightly esoteric siege equipment.
I've been asked a few times about the colours used. It's quite simple, a sprayed dark brown primer followed by a light overspray of a lighter brown. Then drybrush up through Wargames Foundry's Base Sand triad with a big, soft brush. The panels are also painted with the Base Sand triad usually giving the last layer two coats to help solidify it somewhat.
I'll go through the groundwork details when I get to that phase :)

Thank you :)

very nice indeed
-
Incredible work...love it!
-
Looks amazing!

Cheers :)
Didn’t get a chance to update last week but will do this week.
-
Didn't do it that week but I have done now :)
All the walls have been painted and attached. The watchtower ground floor has also been attached to the baseboard.
Next week will be the two barrack blocks, the gates and the final groundwork. The entrance bridge will be the week after those along with the entrance defences.
Photos have been taken inside from now on because of the inclement weather (well, it's certainly inclement here lol).
I've had several people ask if the 15mm yamashiro will be following the same lines and the answer is yes but also there will be some larger buildings that are impractical for 28mm :)

Looking ACE!

Great to see an update n this piece- wonderful work.

Thanks chaps :)

Looking very nice. I'm tempted to do some Samurai every time I see your stuff. What rules do you use James?
-
That's looking very nice, I particularly like the way you paint the woodwork and thanks for the explanation of your colour scheme.
Cheers

Cheers fellas :)

Just give in to the temptation :D
To be honest, I haven't played with them for years but we were using FFoL Core rules with a few thematic traits that were made up. I'm fairly sure that Jaye will be doing a Japanese supplement at some point.
With the medieval supplement that's out it would be even better (with some choice traits added) :)
-

I can resist anything but temptation. ;)

Interesting. I've used bigger battles for a few historical games but the core rules we've mostly used for the more cinematic stuff.
-
I've sorted the gates and interior colours for the ground work and I'll be sorting out the growies for everything at the same time (which will be near the end).
The doors are hinged but one of them is a bit stiff so I might do it again.
Really looking forward to playing on it once it's done :)

Looks superb :-*

8) Cracking work
-
Thanks chaps :)
-
That's looking excellent! It's the sort of display you see you'd see at a museum, but you can game on it.
-
Not quite that good but thanks :)
-
Makes a lovely vignette. Bravo.
-
It looks great. :-* :-* :-*
-
Very cool!
-
The entrance bridge will be the week after those along with the entrance defences.
When can we expect that corner building to hit the shop in 15mm? I want to place an order to recreate this setup for my project. If it isnt in the pipeline, I will substitute with some other buildings....from your range of course.
-
Not quite that good but thanks :)
I beg to differ, I've seen far worse in museums!
Now if only I could get a shrink ray to reduce it to fit in with my 3mm samurai :)
-
Cheers :)

I'm hoping before Christmas but I want to get the other elements out at the same time (wall options, simple gate etc) so it might be best for you to order normally first?

Yeah, I don't think I'll be doing a 3mmrange I'm afraid, my eyes can only just cope with the 6mm lol

Ah, well! I'll give up my search for a shrink ray and save my pennies for some of your 28mm accessories to go with my Soda Pop 28mm Chibi Ninjas. :)

Cheers :)

Order placed this morning! When you release the other stuff I'm sure I will do another one. OUCH....that shipping was a shock, not blaming you as I know shipping cost have hugely increased over the last few years. Good quality products make it worth it though. ;)
-
Received with thanks :)
Might not be until Tuesday until I can post if that’s ok? Got a few sections to cast up, I’ll put a couple of extras in as a thank you.
Yeah, postage is a killer unfortunately :?

Not a worry and thank you! Your building are always a pleasure to work with.
-
Thanks :)
Well, finally got everything done apart from the growies which will hopefully be this weekend.
I've made two bridges, one complete and one with the planks taken off which was a fairly common tactic and the palisade is loose. There's also a photo of the parts used for the complete bridge in case it's of interest :)

Thank you kindly chaps :)
-
Looks great James.Really nice to see this taking shape. Will there be more boards to go with this?
-
Thanks :)
No, it’ll just be this one. It’ll match the normal boards I’ve got and I’ll be doing a few building bases and paddy fields to dot around near it.
-
Simply brilliant - both the Yamashiro and the garrison. Fantastic work.
-
WOW this project looks really nice! :-* :-* :-*
-
Great stuff so far - can't wait to see more! :o

Cheers :)
The first layer of grass is on and once it's dry I'll add the second layer and then the tufts, limited water effects in the ditch and the little details that should make it pop :)

Looks great.
I’m intrigued that you’re adding a second layer of grass. Presumably a different mix and I’m interested to see how you’ll work in amongst the first layer.

Looking amazing :-*

Sorry, I missed this. It’s the same mix and won’t go everywhere, it’ll just add a bit more ‘depth’ to what’s already there.
-
This looks wonderful. :-*
Please can you clarify the dimensions - is the tile 600mm square?
Are the figures Perry 28mm?
Thanks
-
Yes and yes :)

:o wonderful!! :-*

Some of that and a lot of practise :)

Also intrigued by the 2 layer grass and then tufts approach. Can’t wait to see what that looks like.
-
Cheers :)
All done and I rather enjoyed making it. The additions will be kept loose so they can be moved about during a game if necessary. No idea as to rules yet but potentially using Lion Rampant with some period mods.
