Title: The Great Wargames Survey 2022
Post by: GuyB on August 04, 2022, 10:18:14 AM
Hi everyone on the LAF!

Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy have launched its annual survey of our great hobby. This year we have many prizes for those who wish to enter our prize draw. The anonymised results are made available for all wargamers on our blog - you don't need to buy the magazine to see the results.

The more people who enter, the better chance we have of getting a comprehensive picture of the hobby as a whole for 2022.

You can enter here: https://gws2022.paperform.co/

You can also read about previous surveys here: https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/wss_gws/

Thanks,

Guy

Done but the education question seemed a bit stark of choices?

Thanks for taking the survey.

Done but the education question seemed a bit stark of choices?

Are you missing any? This is a new question but we always keep track of comments for future editions.

College/further education.

Just seems a bit of a jump from secondary to degree level.

I did two college courses before my degree but I would bet there are more college attendees than doctorate candidates  :)

It’s the problem of international degree equivalency, but we did offer BA and MA as college options. Should we add ‘Some college courses’?

Thanks.  Done.

I am really interested in the answer to folks primary source of rules.

My suggestion would be;

Secondary school
College/further education
University

Just a suggestion of course  :)

Sharing among wargamers everywhere is an excellent thing to do.

And noted!

Done ... but most of my answers are nonsense because the limit on options is waaaay too low. If it's going to be "pick 3" one of the options needs to be "all of the above."

Also, shared on the Pendraken Forum.

I know, we’re cruel, aren’t we… It’s all Guy’s fault, as everyone knows.

Submitted.  Been doing this survey since it came out.

Only one minor qualm, or suggestion; the survery does not include any options for people who produce rules or design terrain or models.  For example, my favourite part of the wargaming hobby is writing rules and watching people have a good time with them, etc.  Is that "technically" part of wargaming as a hobby?  I'm sure there are quite a few wargamers who dabble in 3D sculpting, game design, terrain manufacture...even if it's not their primary employment, etc.

Might be worth adding a few options on some of the questions for the folks who enjoy that aspect of the wargaming hobby.

By the way, I fully understand if that's not within the scope of the survey.  I know it's more aimed at being a 'consumer research' style survey.

My suggestion would be;
Secondary school
College/further education
University

...Um, just to complete this. There may be a problem, some words do not have the same meaning in different languages and it can be confusing for some people trying to answer.
In France "enseignement secondaire" (which may seem a good translation of "secondary school") actually means everything between "école primaire" primary school (c.10-11 years old) and University. In France a "collège" is the first half of this, usually the first 4 years, the other 3 years before baccalauréat are known as "lycée". French wargamers willing to answer your survey, although knowing some English, may not understand this difference (I myself would not have if some computer game long ago had not asked me to build colleges and other educational buildings etc. on a Cuba-like island).

Interesting  8)

So maybe just a ‘catch all’ and have it as Further Education as an option after mandatory secondary school?

I've hit a brick wall on the question 'Where do you play your games?'

I've checked 'at a club' but that doesn't appear to be a valid answer and keeps returning the 'THIS QUESTION IS REQUIRED' error message.

did it again, and thanks again to Kawansary and Guy for doing this. I also struggled with some questions. Might I suggest that for future surveys it would be interesting to see what sector wargamers were working in (very broad I know, but government, education, health, IT, care, retail etc)

One question I would be interested to see would be about use of technology : in game and in prepping, how many use an airbrush, 3d printer, laminator even?

And done, another done and dusted.

Be interesting to see if spending continued upwards after the Covid lockdown and reopening.

Cheers
