Title: The era of Nicholas I
Post by: Khmorg on August 13, 2022, 12:01:19 PM
Greetings, readers of this forum.

I decided to make figures for the time of the reign of Nicholas the First. The size of the figures is 28 mm. I would be glad for any comments and links to books on the uniform of this period.

I am currently reading The Russian Army Under Nicholas I - 1825 to 1855 by John Sheldon Curtiss

It is very interesting covering the organisation and operation of the Russian army with a brief summary of campaigns against Persia, Turkey, the Poles and in Hungary as well as a look at the operation of the army in the Crimean war.

It's an interesting read. But no illustrations or uniform details other than broad description.

Very interested in figures for a Russian army for the campaigns between the napoleonic wars and the adoption of the helmet.  Id be keen to hear what your plans are!

Very nice.

Good to see some figures without greatcoats and Russians in attacking poses rather than just marching.

Are these compatible in height with the 28mm Warlord / Great War ranges or smaller 25mm Foundry / Ebor / Britannia figures ?

Unfortunately, I only have Warlord figures (Zulu War). I was guided by the size of Perry miniatures 28 mm. I'll try to post a pic of the comparison tonight.

They look good. Will Eureka be casting these or is it just a private project? Would love to see some Russians for the 1830s.

Thank you for your questions. I'm wondering what my work is like. My motivation is starting to rise!

Now about color
1. At present, there are foreign policy difficulties.
These figures are the fruit of my creativity. I have the technology of drop casting, but the material for this implementation will not be available soon. If anyone decides to produce them, then contact me in a personal message.

2. Plans for this project
Fortress artillery during the first bombardment of Sevastopol
Russian lancers in the Battle of Balaklava
Children of Sevastopol
Sailors
Cossacks scouts
sappers
doctors

In the future (if I do not lose interest), there will be a uniform for 1830.
Question. Make a figure for the Polish uprising of 1830 or a parade in Tsarskoye Selo?

Thank you very much for your attention to this work.
It so happened that I left three soldiers in the drying chamber for the battle near the Black River.
In an effort to fix this, I hasten to show you these three figures

Thanks for the idea.
I will try to find an image from 1854 of what such a soldier could look like. It was a bell or a rail that was pounded with an iron stick...I need time to clarify this.

Hi

First of all, I want to thank you for your project on the Hungarian uprising! This is very impressive work.
If you need information about the Russian uniform, then it is in the books of Zvegintsev and Viskovatov.

Now, at your request, I am talking about the material.
Frame - copper wire. Then (chest pelvis, etc.) from Magik sculpt + green staff. The figure itself from the procreate paty (top layer)

Thank you! I am very interested in your project since I am building basically exactly  this army as the third faction for the 1848 Hungarian project. Also thanks for the info on sculpting, I use the same method of copper wire+green stuff armature, but I am yet to try Procreate.

Perhaps as a side project you could do a childcatcher.

Children in 1854 collected kernels and brought them to adults. This painting was the inspiration.

And then a large group of figures about medicine.

Thanks for your comment.

When sculpting, I use the books of Gottfried Bammes.
the figure of a horse is more complicated than the figure of a man - but horses are very interesting animals. Several figures of running horses create the illusion that they are actually running.

Yes, I also used an artist anatomy book for mine, but the problem is with this approach that you also need a huge amount of simplification, so I also kept an old GW horse at hand :)

Yes. All riders are removable. Riders fit any horse. They can even be placed on Calpe horses.

Someone makes bags and rolls together with the rider (it’s easier to cast it in metal), but I made it so that the horse separately from the rider and the rider apart from the horse have the right to exist in a completed form.

So, I take a horse and install a mannequin on it (a wire frame and some material in the pelvic and chest area), the feet must be flush with the horse's chest.

It is difficult for me to explain the sculpting process in words. If it's interesting - I can photograph each stage of modeling in the future.

If you have time, I am interested :) I use the horse then wire mannequin method, but it is still hard to sculpt the riders legs in the proper position. Maybe I also need more practice.

Hospital 1854.
The nurses of the Exaltation of the Cross community worked in the hospital. These were the first (one of the first) nurses in the world.
The medicines were just oil, clean rags for dressing wounds, and hot drinks.

Lovely figures! :-* :-*

You’ve got me thinking. In the English speaking world the Crimean War is barely remembered. In the popular imagination Florence Nightingale and just perhaps ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ might be recalled. Despite their being several Crimean War ranges I’ve never seen a Florence Nightingale figure in this scale.

Id not heard of Dr Whiteheard, for the reasons Carlos describes. He'd quite an interesting life it seems -

I didn't know much about it either. My interest in this topic began with Nakhimov. Even at school, they told me that Nakhimov was a talented leader, but I couldn’t understand exactly what he did. I had to look for information myself, read books and make a "scientific mission" to Sevastopol. Now I think that I can still tell a lot of interesting things on this topic.

Thank you for your attention to this work.
When the first battle of Alma took place, there were a lot of wounded and the city infirmary simply could not accommodate everyone. The wounded were placed wherever it was possible. Mostly they were tents and bedding made of straw.

Subsequently, the following medical support system was built
Yellow and red zone. Zheltaya is an advanced dressing station (for the first time, there could be doctors here - they were not at the collection point for the wounded. Although Pirogov sometimes came against all the rules to these points). Krasnaya is the main dressing station (there were four of them). Then - hospitals (two). Then - rear hospitals (1,2,3 lines). And, finally, permanent (indispensable) hospitals - in the depths of the empire.

In general, the goal of medicine was to provide Christian assistance (shelter, food and warmth), and not to return the wounded to the ranks upon recovery. Wounds to the head and body are usually fatal. In the arm or leg - amputation.

First there will be several figures of divers, then sailors. The figure of Admiral Kornilov will be an equestrian figure. I will photograph the manufacturing process in detail. (It is not surprising, but the admiral on horseback commanded the sailors and naval artillery firing from the bastions.)

In general, let's dive into the probable past. In Balaklava, in one of the cafes, I came across a photo of a diving suit, which was taken from one of the British transports. The ship crashed on the same night as the Black Prince. The diving suit was brought to blow up the flooded Russian battleships at the bottom. The enemy had plans to clear the fairway and go to the roadstead of Sevastopol. So .... they meet an enemy diver - two of ours who went out of their coastal underwater cave .....

It isn't all that surprising. I mean, as far as gaming is concerned, why would you need one? It's not like she was anywhere near the fighting. She's about as much use on the gaming table as having a figure depicting the Earl of Aberdeen. There is more justification for a Mary Seacole, but even then, what would you do with that figure on the table top?

I agree about the figures being great.

Title: Re: The era of Nicholas I
Post by: carlos marighela on November 19, 2022, 11:57:44 PM
I agree, in a direct, plonk her on the table sense, there is no real rationale.

Of course if figure ranges purely reflected blokes in the act of hurting each other, you would probably be consigning about 15-20% of the stuff produced to the skip. Any number of non-combatants, see, this range. Any number of vignettes, any number of quirky, eccentric and arguably useless (in a wargaming sense) figures out there. I'd say about 15-20% of figures are just set dressing anyway.

I'm mildly surprised that nobody has commissioned Flo as a convention giveaway or that Annie over at Bad Squiddo hasn't done one.

Anyway, I digress. Hoping that this range will see a commercial release somewhere. They certianly deserve success.

figures solely to create the atmosphere of that time. of course, the mechanism of the game excludes civilians, but each of us will be pleased to have a very good moral goal. Rescue a wounded guy, protect a civilian, get a defenseless sympathy bonus. the figures of historical personalities in the entourage of time will bring the breath of time even closer. the effect of writing in a historical epoch.

They can be mission objectives (especially in skirmish games), added to terrain pieces, or simply just be there for the sake of collecting. I like the concept of having them.

Bastion with 36-pound ship guns of the 1848 model, Aleksandrovsky Zavod and Rear Admiral Kornilov.
Vladimir Alekseevich Kornilov had a checker, which was the memory of the deceased friend of the midshipman - Zheleznov. Grigory Zheleznov bought this saber for some small money in Pyatigorsk, where the ship "12 Apostles" called in 1841. By the way, Lermontov was a second cousin of Kornilov. So the highlander sold the saber and said that he did not take money for a richly decorated saber, since there was a curse on it. Each of its owners dies in the first battle. In the very first battle, Kornilov put on this sword, since the possibility of an enemy landing was more than real. As a result, the enemy shell tore off the Rear Admiral's leg, broke the saber and killed the horse.

In a couple of weeks I will have news on this project.

These figures have capsule rifle. This doesn't quite fit with RCW.

Further, this project is planned

sappers,

generals,

Moscow regiment,

Don Cossack cannon,

saboteurs,

prayer service.

Next, I will travel in time to either 1830 or 1812

Next will be the artillery of the Don Cossacks. This artillery has proven itself well under Balaklava.

Sappers. These are the invisible heroes of the defense of Sevastopol. Many fortifications were built under the guidance of the talented engineer Eduard Ivanovich Totleben. The thing is that the fortifications were in harmony with the landscape. Thanks to this, it was possible to build fortifications faster than the enemy and the enemy had to build counter-batteries in areas less prepared for this. Sappers are not only fortifications - this is also a mine war. The war of moves, trenches and mines was completely won by these heroes. the enemy failed to lay a single mine under our fortifications.

Well, I remade two sailors.

Thanks for the kind words.

The Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Empire was based in Sevastopol in 1854. There were many families of sailors in the city. When the fortifications were being built, both women and children came out to help.

Some good news on this front, the majority of Khmorgs sculpts have arrived at a manufacturers and once we have made the moulds (and there are a lot of them to make), you will be able to purchase them from anywhere in the world.

Great looking minis!  :o

Not my scale but wow! I wish someone would do some of these in 15mm!

I noticed that a few posters mentioned the Polish Uprising earlier in the thread - my question would be which one? There were two - 1830 and 1848. Of course, only the one in 1830 involved Russian troops.

Incredible work!

In the future, I will make figures for 1830. I have some information on the uniform of this period. I even have a few Polish books. But first of all, attention will be paid to the Russian army during the Polish uprising of 1830.

At present, the Eastern Company 1854-1855 project of the Crimean War has not been completed.

First of all, the Cossacks did not wear spurs. The Cossacks had horses for personal use and they took care of them.

I've been following this thread intently for months but it looks like I never commented before. This is all truly beautiful work and an exciting expansion to the period which is much under-rated.

I for one will be lashing out on the Cossacks in a significant way just for starters. This year I've been re-engaging in my Balaklava build and only decided to do the entire Russian army.

I'd love some Hussars and Ural Cossacks for obvious reasons. As an Aussie, I couldn't be happier that Eureka stepped up so I'll be in like Flynn.

I never thought about giving up the Ural Cossacks and hussars. I'll put these topics in the queue. Nevertheless, in the Crimean War of 1854-1855 of the Eastern Company of 1853-1856, it was the hussars who received the first St. George Cross. The hussars' junction met a French colonel in charge of reconquest (if I'm interested, I'll find the name of this sheep). The detachments exchanged greetings and the Frenchman handed out a personal card to the commander of the hussars. Then the French were taken prisoner. It was sometimes a very gallant war.

Saboteurs. In those days, brave people gathered and went into the trenches of the enemy. They brought trophies and prisoners. The most famous was the sailor Peter Koshka. Armed with what they could. Sometimes bullets were poured into a small bag and with this bag they stunned enemy sentries on the head.

You are an amazingly talented sculptor.  The movement on your figures is so natural; not forced at all.  It creates a realism rarely seen in anything but “one-off” diorama pieces.

Your ACW sculpts are wonderful, but these are at another level altogether.

Keep challenging yourself.  I can’t wait to see where you go from here.

This project is for my relaxation and removal of psychological daily stress. This project is to dive into the past. In the apartment of Nicholas 1.
When creating the figure, the goal was not to create a figure for replication (although any figure can be cast in parts)

And to ACW - I think I will return in the future  ;)

I'm very pleased to have received today a series of photos of these wonderful figures from Nic Robson of Eureka Miniatures. A good number (but not all) are laid out on the mould wheels ready to go and order codes and price lists have been created.

I'm on the verge of placing my first of what I anticipate being several orders, commencing with the lancer/uhlans. I will drop everything and paint them up as fast as I can to share what they turn out like - as far as my skills can do them justice at any rate.

The masters for the dismounted ural cossacks look great and I can only beg that mounted variants will follow. I will post as much as I have permission to on my blog and will link back to the LAF but it's probably not appropriate for me to hijack this thread.

I already threw out a wish list but I'd like to publicly advocate strongly for regular Light and Heavy field and horse artillery guns, crews and limbers (6pdr, 9pdr licorn, 12pdr and 18pdr licorns). These are gaps in the period more generally in this scale.

I understand the difficulties of getting post out of Russia but Khmorg ... you are doing a beautiful thing.

Currently, generals are in development, then there will be choke shooters. (also Ural (army) Cossacks in attack, prayer service, Moscow infantry regiment)

At the same time, I was invited to take part in a project for Russia in the 17th century (Times of Troubles). I will earn money, buy molding rubber and mold the necessary items for the 1830 project. Artillery will be part of the 1830 project

Comrades,

I've placed my pre-order for some Uhlans this week with Nic Robson of Eureka Miniatures. Nic has developed the figures codes and they are ready for moulding. He was kind enough so send me the complete photo set of the masters on the rubber mould wheels. He has not received the complete range to-date. As you might all appreciate, postage out of Russia is difficult at present. You will notice the foot skirmishing Ural Cossacks which we had not seen before (I don't think).

Sorry for not answering earlier.

Part of this figurine crossed two customs houses with great adventures and ended up in Eureka miniatures. they are already in the metal

there is no part on the second part yet there is no glitter.

In the process of making arrows from fittings and generals.

but lately I've been busy with other projects.

I hope that when the world calms down, this project will begin its further progress
