Title: Ivanhoe in Bretonia
Post by: Koppi on August 14, 2022, 10:11:42 AM
Today some words about an old film; and some pictures of Bretonnian knights.
English translation at the end of the german text.

I agree! Prince Valiant is awsome. I recently purchased a series of books with all the comic book strips starting from 1937. But I also enjoy the movie with Robert Wagner. It is the only movie that I can remember where shields actually get battle damage (although unintentionally if I remember correctly).

Always good to see Bretonnians especially ones inspired by the likes of classic Ivanhoe movie.

The Prince Valiant cartoon series was good and re-watching it now some good ideas for scenarios. One of the GW knights errant minis might make a good Valiant.

It is however distressing to see how much old GW Bretonnians now cost on the likes of ebay.

There are however good proxies available on the likes of Etsy for a fraction of the cost and likely even better looking see for example: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1238528694/breton-knight-errants-unit-7-miniatures?gpla=1&gao=1&

For an Ivanhoe game you would also want to play a tournament of jousting for which GW did a rule supplement in white dwarf called Full Tilt.

Steel and Steed is a rules set specifically for tournaments (grand melee, archery, jousting, etc).

The strips are lovely, I've read up through book 8 of the collected series with my son so far.

Speaking of the shields, when I was a kid, stationed in Germany in the 80s, we went to see a reenactment in Bavaria.  There was a full military camp outside the castle, huge spectator stands, and full tilt jousting.  The evil black knight kept a flail hidden under his saddle and would bash his foes with it while the reeve wasn't looking.  In the end the good Bavarian knight came riding in and they unhorsed each other.  During the ensuing melee they beat on the metal shields (with axes) so hard they went from convex to concave.  Naturally we cheered the Black Knight just to be different (got some funny looks that day, let me tell you :) )

In the end the Black Knight triumphed, took the crown, kicked the reeve over and made his escape.  My son now has the wood shield my parents bought me that day, complete with all the scars from playing knights with it.

Steel and Steed rules look interesting - though expensive and evidently there is also a card deck. Said rules do also seem overly complex. There is little online about these rules but good review and how to play here:

There was also the 1954 Prince Valiant movie
