Title: Building a 1/50 scale Tango boat from styrofoam (and escalating into monitors..)
Post by: Pijlie on August 26, 2022, 03:33:27 PM
The Tango boat was a project I didn't need, wasn't planning on but started just because I wanted to see if I could. Wherever will I store it? But it did turn out rather satisfactorily, I daresay.

In the course of the project I not only built three Tango boats, but also thought up a way to easily reconfigure them into Monitors or a Medivac vessel with a heli deck.

Fantastic build, some great modelling.  You should be well chuffed with them.

Wow! Those are amazing. That's some seriously impressive foam-cutting skills.

Very nice 8)

And not just one but three, because why not, right?  :D The shapes do look very suitable for building with styrofoam though; very straighforward geometric shapes stuck together; almost asking to be built that way!

Now I have to research what Tango boats actually are, because even though I know about quite a bit of hardware, these, I don't know. lol  I take it they're Korea or Vietnam era?

It would only be polite to shed some light on that.

Tango boats (the name comes from their usual serial number T-designation) were heavily modified LCM6's landing craft that were meant to be used in amphibious operations in Vietnam by the ARVN and the US brown water navy.

They were essentially a combo of a troop transporter and an assault boat. They were built in several configurations of which I have built the three most common: the landing craft, the medivac boat with a helicopter deck and the monitor meant for bunker busting and support fire. Beside these there were versions specifically for Command and Control, refueling and equipped with heavy flamethrowers, the so called "Zippo"boat.

By the Powers Of Google. I found them at https://www.rivervet.com/tango.htm (https://www.rivervet.com/tango.htm). An interesting site in its own right btw.

Cheers  8)

Intrigued, I looked into the subject some more; fascinating stuff, that. they were basically WW2 era landing boats with modern upgrades and armour. A bit niche, but I did learn something new again :)

The French did they same kind of thing in the late 40's, early 50's. Tres chic!

Really great work on building these - very impressive modelling skills!

I assume if the base hull was a WWII LCM then they weren’t anywhere as near armoured as they look?

From Wikipedia:

High-hardness XAR-30-type steel and bar armor provided ballistic protection for the crew from rounds up to .50-caliber in size and offered some protection against high explosive antitank rounds up to 57mm. Below-waterline hull blisters provided added hull protection, minimized draft, and increased stability. The Tango’s armor, however, generally could not withstand the full force of a B40 rocket
