Title: Thatched Huts
Post by: Furt on October 14, 2009, 04:37:55 AM
Here are a couple of thatched rural huts I recently scratchbuilt from cardboard, for a game set in India.

I'd like opinions on whether they look Indian enough and if not how could I improve their Indian flavor.

Nice work! Of these two, the second one has more of an Indian feel to me.

Thanks for the comments lads.

I guess their are no India experts amongst us!

I expected at least to be shot down in flames for my uneducated attempts to replicate a nations native architecture!  lol

Well they look great either way. And how'd you get the texture on the first one?

The texture was made with "weed mat" covered with plaster. Weed mat is a black weaved plastic material used to prevent weeds growing in a garden bed. I don't know if it is an Australian product (I doubt it). I used the same stuff on the second building to give the appearance of the wattle frame beneath the mud covering.

That building looks very nice. Good detail and colouration. Should add nicely to your gaming table. Thanks for sharing!!

Looks more southern Indian to me, but very very good nonetheless!  I know we have that material in the states, and now I know what to do with the extra i have from planting my flower garden.  Great job and keep em coming.

I say you have done quite well there, fsultana. There are thatched roofs but plenty of flat roofs as well on small rural huts. Many of the thatched roof huts I have looked at had a more low-slung look. In addition, the thatching often overhangs a metre or more beyond the edge of the wall and supported up by rough wooden beams. Not that it means it is wrong but I am not familiar with the high wooden platform on the larger hut you made.

Thanks for the tips Nikopol - this is what I was seeking.

So do you mean flat thatched roofs or some other material laid flat?

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I'd resurrect this one, seeing that they are more of the same. These are made along the same lines but with removable doors and shutters.
Check out my blog http://adventuresinlead.blogspot.com/ to see what I plan doing with these.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I actually made a batch of six - they are fairly easy to make the most laborious part being the thatch and plastering.

Considering they are made of cardboard (Lego box cardboard actually) they are surprising sturdy when plastered and painted.

I like the thatch poking through better than the all round version I did before as well.

The shutters are cut off matchsticks, painstakingly glued together, but they look rustic enough.

Unfortunately I can't keep them all - four are going to the USA in exchange for more minis -  :'( . And if I want a whole village of these - well I guess its back to the grindstone.
