Title: The Mothercrushers are preparing for war
Post by: jon_1066 on September 01, 2022, 11:50:01 PM
My new old project is an Oldhammer warband for use with Dragon Rampant.   They are the old Nick Lund Orcs centered around Eezer Ugezod  and the Mothercrusher tribe.

The first unit is finally painted - the Orc Chieftain's Chariot.  Just need to base it.  It is the Mirliton produced version of the original Grenadier sculpt I picked up about 10 years ago when I first toyed with the idea of reviving this lot.  It will be a heavy rider with chariot upgrade

I've got a bunch of the original Grenadier Orc Wolf Riders (Heavy Riders with or without bows), the Chronicle Death Commandos (Elite Foot), the Mother Crushers from the regiments of renown with a few Chronicle Black Orcs to make up the numbers (Offensive Heavy Foot), a bunch of plastic Fantasy Warriors Orcs I've converted in various ways (Mixed Light Foot) and the old Grenadier Goblin War Giant (Greater Warbeast) to round them out.  So plenty to keep me busy.

Some thirty year old paint jobs will need stripping!

I am using the Foundry Phlegm Green triad for the orc skin.  I want to go with fairly dull and grubby clothing and equipment for most of the orcs with the principal banner colours being blood red and black.  The symbol will be the crescent moon as it is cast into the sides of the chariot.  I'll carry that on throughout the army.

Very cool 8)
Strangely I’ve almost finished my classic Asgard orc and goblin army, these earlier figures are much more canon than what’s available now.

That’s a great looking chariot and the rest of the army looks promising! I’ve been messing around with some of the old Grenadier orcs, too, and I’m looking forward to seeing your army come together.

Now you just need a Samuel L Jackson figure.
"Will someone get these Mothercrusher Orcs off the Mothercrusher Plain?"

Ha!

Great-looking set-up!

The crucial question, of course, is who is the real Eeza? The Regiments of Renown one (the better figure, I think) or the Death Commandos fellow (bigger!).

That's a great idea. You've got to go Nick Lund all the way if it's the Mothercrusher tribe, his style is just too distinct.

Now that really is a can of worms.

Cheers

I figure that since there is way more than a 24 point warband there he can exist in multiple states - riding his chariot, with his death commando chums,  leading his regiment of renown or even on the back of a wolf should he desire.  He can be subbed out from most of those units with an alternate or the entire unit may not even be selected (especially if the giant is coming along).

Great to see the chariot all painted up Jon - always fancied that kit myself. This has the makings of a truly badass warband.

I do hope you share some photos when your done. I so love a pre-Hammer orc.

I always preferred Adams orcs and goblins to Lund but you have done a fantastic job!

Thanks.  I’ve got another warband’s worth of them as well!  Might get paint on them in about ten years based on my glacial pace of painting.

There's a wonderful rapport between Nick Lund and orcs.

Fantastic - do love and adore the Grenadier orcs. Eagerly await to see more.

Started on the Fantasy Warriors plastic Orcs

and the back

They are not quite finished but getting there.  The boss on the back of the archers shows they are actually the EM4 version rather than the originals.  They will be covered by a shield (Black with a red moon motif I'm thinking)

Those look good, I like the colours you chose. The spearman looks quite a bit more dynamic than the original pose - it shows what you can do with just a few cuts to reposition the original pieces.

Thanks

I was pleasantly surprised how much you could change them.  The spear orc is definitely the easiest to change,  the Sword one not so much.  Even just changing the angle on the base improves the archers no end.

These are the spear conversions I did - from a basic arm swap or angle change to a couple converted to an archer.

They're looking good!

Lots of great inspiration here; I've just aquired another 48 of these fellows and need to work on individualising them. So I'll be stealing freely from this thread!

You could definitely do more, especially if you drill out the hands and put other weapons in.

The spear-orc cuts nicely at the waste to rotate the body (one you've freed his other arm).  Both arms are ripe for chopping off, repositioning and/or swapping.

Head swaps are significantly harder because of the way they are moulded on.  I decapitated one of them to rotate the head angle which works OK.

The Archers could make a good spear orc (if left handed) or prime conversion to a standard bearer.

Have you seen this blog? Lots of good ideas on there as well.

That article you linked to was what inspired my attempts at conversions!

I like the variety of re-posing you showed in the picture above. The conversions turning spearmen into archers worked quite well. That’s one I haven’t tried, but I might give that a try if I expand my EM4 orc archer unit - the standard plastic archer is a good figure, but a bit of variety would be great to have. Thanks for sharing pics of the modified figs!

Yup. I have one converted to have a short spear in the left hand with a Perry kettle hat over the hood (he's been unpainted for years because I need to repair the brim of the helmet at the back) and add a slung bow to go with the quiver. The right hand of the archer is in a good position for a shield, and the hood means that helmets look good when added. This thread should provide some impetus to get him done!

Yes, it's a great source of inspiration. The swordsman is probably the hardest to convert successfully. I've added helmets and different weapons over the years, but the weapons always end up needing repaired - probably time to paint and multibase them to keep them intact!

I'm also going to try splicing on some Oathmark orc heads - I think they should be big enough to look OK.
