What kind of rules do you use when you´re playing Cthulhu tabletop?

Thanks from a cold Sweden!  >:(

I use 'strange aeons' from unclemikes worldwide, currently my favourite rules of any genre  :-*

there's also 'chaos in carpathia' from westwind, and you can download playtest cthulhu rules from malebolgia here on the forums 'cosmic horror' it's currently the topic below this one on this board, and ganesha games have 'fear and faith' which are fun

i'm sure people will be along shortly to suggest others.

regards

jim

We were playing the Call of Cthulu RPG last night with miniatures on a tabletop.

Well, Advanced Heroquest dungeon tiles and a Heroquest board on the tabletop. 30+ minis, though :)  Glad my character didn't see the vision of Nyarlathotep :D

Chaos in Carpathia or SuperSystem.

Savage Worlds is actually a pretty good system if you're looking to combine RPG mechanics with miniature combat.  Just use the Guts stat to represent sanity, convert the necessary mythos beasties to Savage Worlds stats, and you're away!

Just don't make my mistake and inadvertantly sever an important NPC's leg with a ridiculously lucky shot from a .22.  It's hard to question them when they can't stop screaming.

You could try the Fear and Faith rules based on the Song of Blades and Heroes engine.  Simple straightforward rules and well supported by the yahoo group.

Hi

Newt week I'll be trying Strange Aeons and then Mythos Miniatures (currently a playtest version) so I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm also thinking about using Savage Worlds Showdown (free) now that reality Blurs have launched Savage Worlds Cthulhu.

How very true!

Love the GW/Chaosium Call of Cthulhu, always been my favourite of all the RPGs I have ever played, and not just for the insanity ;D, there is always the very real chance of your character dying in a messy and altogether unsavoury manner...

...14 hit points eh, and what's it's minmum damage role...? more then that... arse :o...

Got a 3rd edition hard back rule book, and some great add ons from some other editions (20s source book and a Britain source book), play a bit of a mish-mash but it really works for us, nothing better then a percentage based skill system.

I wish there were mass combat rules for Call of Cthulhu, ah it would be a perfect world then.

Well Mongoose published mass combat rules for their version of runequest.  It shouldn't be too hard to adapt, both systems use a variation on Chaosiums d100 rules.

The savage worlds showdown rules have just finished alpha stage and will soon be uploaded in their updated beta form.

The system itself originated in “deadlands: the wyrd west” it has horrors, monsters and normal people with sub modern guns and shaky magic facing of against them. I would say it’s a perfect fit for CoC skirmish games. It comes with a troop builder that allows for a lot choices.

In fact, should you want a more risky magic system you could check out the savage worlds  deadlands reloaded RPG. It has a magic system that works on drawing a poker hand, failure makes for some interesting things. (normally the GM would have a bad spirit take over for instance, but it would be reasonable to have the mythos player take over)

And indeed a third party is releasing a cthulhu savage worlds book, should allow for some interesting setting rules.

Didn't Chaosium have some mass battle rules in their old Stormbringer RPG?

Since the rules are very similar they might be adaptable.

If the game Stombringer can be found.

Sorry, that wasn't very much help was it?  :(

The savage worlds showdown rules have been updated since alpha and are once again available, with the few problems it still had removed. (well, I have found a thing or two that still need some small works) all in all it looks very good and professional as expected from Pinnacle entertainment.

Personally I think the intimidate skill makes for a good ‘mental assault’ insanity stuff.
