Title: A return to the Seven Years War
Post by: OB on September 13, 2022, 11:14:42 AM

I abandoned my SYW project some years ago. Now I find my SYW mojo has returned.  I have pretty much all the figures I need mainly from Blue Moon and Old Glory.  I also have two fine sets of rules.  Then there are excellent flags available from David at Not by appointment blog. All good to go.

You can see my progress so far by clicking the link.

A flag with the grenadiers?  :o

Yes I know, the horror.  Flags were functional, handy even in a composite battalion.

Nice!  Yeah, I suddenly got back into the period about two years ago, after a gap of 25 years!

OB, I recently dusted off and re-flagged my 15mm SYW Prussians. What are  your "fine sets of rules"? I've tried Osprey's "Honours of War" which I would describe as "OK-ish"....hence any other recommendations  welcome.

There must be something in the air SJWi.  I have Honours of War and Field of Battle3 between the two very different approaches I think I'll be entertained.

My first Prussian brigade is now complete, 3 battalions. Le Noble Jagers you can see below.  I intend 2 units of Prussian light infantry. I’ve also got a Hungarian battalion done.

If it is of interest here is the link to my blog.

Oh very nice.  I'm so glad you didn't do the Prussian 3rd Hussars... I'm having nightmares and flash-backs after painting those recently...  >:(

Thanks Mark, I've two more to do but not the 3rd.  I got my second brigade of Prussian infantry done so that's the heavy lifting over.  For the Prussians anyhow.

I thought these pics might be of interest to those considering buying Grenz infantry.  The unit is a mixture from Old Glory and Lancashire Games.  They mix well enough to my eye.

Another milestone reached in my SYW Project.  The second Prussian infantry brigade is done.  There will be a third too.  The figures are mainly Blue Moon with a smattering of Eureka and Lancashire.  The flags are by Not by Appointment- I use them whenever I can.

King of the Battlefield Eighteenth Century Wargames Rules have been out there for nigh on 20 years!
They give good games as one on ones or as huge multiplayer all day bashes.
Simple to learn and great fun.

I would love to post some pics, but how?

Here are a couple of games of King of the Battlefield.

One is taken at home using some of the vast number of units we have amassed over the years. Not a historic match up but more a "yours versus mine" all day engagement.

The other is a normal Bank Holiday Monday affair at the club. We encourage newbies as well as old sweats to bring and play.

Have fun.

My first Austrian infantry Brigade is done.  I took the opportunity to do the Würzburg contingent because David from Not by Appointment does the flags.  That apart the Würzburg lads were good troops.

Quite a collection building up.

Curious comments on your blog about the issues with figures, finding bits of venting or flow channels (not sure about the terms you used, never heard before) after painting, enough to wilt your enthusiasm at the time.  A careful cleaning and filing beforehand usually does the trick and then another inspection after priming usually finds everything.  Once in a great while I might find a piece here or there that got missed but that is usually a result of assembly line painting a lot of figures.  My most recent project had a few bits - painting 194 15 mm Wildebeest (which I broke down into 3 x 48 animals and 1 x 50 animals, the last batch having the rest of the main herd of 180 and some live animal trade and six dead animals). [Source of wildebeests were Irregular and Stone Mountain Miniatures African cattle and Pendraken 10 mm actual wildebeest for younger animals - stand-ins, mostly]

Only rarely anymore do I find figures that have much 'flash' of any sort on them since most companies now use centrifugal casting.  I like figures that only need to have a file waved over them and they are clean!  Okay, most figures need a little cleaning/filing on the bottom of the base.

Back to your collection, I am a bit jealous as this is the one period that still tempts me but I just must stop - far too many figures to paint, enough to haunt a dozen gamers guilty conscience's.  Finish my German East Africa and, now, my only non-historical (I count Stone Age as pre-history, not fantasy) Star Wars cinematic adventure (not really sci-fi in my book) and I MUST be done.  The gray hair demands it!  ;)

Swarf, is micro thin sharp strands of metal, less than a mill in width.  like micro wire and hard to see.  Very difficult to get out if they stick you and snap, painful too.  I picked up the term from a machine shop and don't know if it is in common usage.

Anyhow, it seems to have been limited to the original batch.  The rest are as you say.

Just to add to your temptation Lancashire have a 20% off Sale coming up.  I have some of their SYW stuff and it is fine, could do with some NCO's but fine.  The new French are good with big horses, I'd like them to have a variant trooper rather than single pose.  I intend getting some more and doing a review.

Yes, the grey hair cannot be denied.

Superb, once again!

Well done on including limbers.  My collection sadly doesn't include a single limber.  I wish I'd done some as I went along, but it's too late now and the cost of equipping my armies with the flippin' things would be astronomical!

I’ve finished two composite battalions of Prussian Grenadiers for my Seven Years War Project.  They are drawn from the following Musketeer Regiments- Anhalt- Dessau, Braunschweig, Von Kanitz and Braunschwei-Bevern.

The figures are mainly Blue Moon with a dash of Eureka.

Well that's the SYW Prussians done.  The last artillery battery, Generals and Brigadiers completed today.

The Army comprises of 4 units of hussars, 3 of Dragoons, 3 of Cuirassiers, nine battalions of line infantry, two of grenadiers infantry and three batteries of artillery.  Oh, and two units of light troops.

The Austrians are nearly there.  A unit of Dragoons should do it.
