Title: Paramar Project
Post by: Pictors Studio on September 16, 2022, 04:15:10 AM
We had a good time with our last 30K campaign that we decided to delve into things a little deeper this time around.

We wanted to do a campaign where we could combine Titans, Space Marines and Spaceships.  There were several options but with what we had it seemed like Paramar would be the best choice.

One of our guys is building Alpha Legion so we should be good on that.  Then I have stuff for the Titans, both War Griffons and Tiger Eyes and another guy has more War Griffons, so we were covered there.

I have enough BFG stuff to do both sides of what was a rather small space battle.

So all that was left was the Iron Warriors, and they don't take long.

We are going to do four games.

The first is going to be BFG.

The second is going to be the Titanicus game.

The third is going to be the tank battle between the Alpha Legion and the Iron Warriors.

Then the final will be the assault on the moving maze defensive works at the heart of the Paramar base.

Each game will have an impact on the next.  So the side that wins the space ship battle will have an advantage in the titanicus game, the winner of that will have an advantage in the tank battle and if the Alpha Legion get warriors to the base in the tank battle they will be able to use whatever they get off the table in the final siege.

I'm working on the Iron Warrior tanks right now.

That is all that is done so far.

Ultimately there are going to be three Sicarans.  A squadron of two count as Elites and one as an HQ choice for this force.

This is one of the tanks from the squadron.  This will be the squadron command tank.

Then this is the other one from that group.  I still have the overall command tank to do.  I still have to buy that.

The troops choices are made up of Predator tanks.  I ultimately need three of those but I have two done so far.

The third will probably be similarly armed to one of those above.  I'm not sure that the Volkite weapon is worth it for a tank battle and these are Iron Warriors so they are most concerned with bringing down fortifications.

But we'll see.  The graviton and Volkite weapons do look pretty cool and once they pop those XXth Legion APCs the softer bits inside will need some killing too.

The Heavy Support choice was the first tank I did, which was the new Kratos.

I went with the battlecannon option so that they would have some choices about shooting at infantry as well as tanks with it.  As anti armour, any other Legion would be on the struggle bus with the battle cannon, but as the Iron Warriors get a +1 S when shooting at armour, the S8 battle cannon becomes a rather threatening S9 weapon.

I'm working on some Siege Terminators next.  I also have a Spartan APC to assemble and build, which I'll hopefully get done this weekend.  It will be the fourth of those that I've done.

What I have left for the tank force is the termies and their Spartan, 1 more Predator, 1 more Sicaran and a Land Raider Proteus with a squad of regular Iron Warriors in it.

So I need to finish 4 more vehicles and 20 infantry and this side of the third game is done.

Odd, a couple of the pictures won't show up.

Here is the first Sicaran

A very nice looking force. I rather like the final armor effect.  Spray/airbrush with a wash for the tanks?

Pretty much.  I did some weathering on them for rust, blackening and dirt.  Not sure how well that comes out in the pictures.  There is also some chipping on the hazard stripes.

I mostly got the infantry done for the tank game.  There are only 20 infantry from IVth Legion involved in the battle.

Here are the Terminators.

These are the Siege Tyrant terminators.  They have a missile launcher system in addition to their twin linked bolters and powerfists or chainfists.  They are going to be in a land raider spartan which I'm planning on getting to this week.

They should be almost as effective as the tanks at being anti armour, if they can get up on enemy armour they will probably be even more effective.

There will also be Alpha Legion infantry so a secondary purpose will be to eliminate them as well if they come spilling out of their APCs for some reason.

The other squad will just be a regular tactical squad.  They will have limited utility against any of the vehicles on the table and will be in a Land Raider Proteus.  Their goal will probably be to try to get to the front of the Alpha Legion force and take out any infantry trying to hoof it off the table after their vehicle was destroyed.

Only six of them done so far. I have the other four assembled and primed, as well as the command Sicaran, and hope to get them airbrushed in the next 5 days or so.

I added a sixth tank to the force.  This time it is the HQ tank, another Sicaran.

This one is armed identically to the others.  I was hoping that we were going to see more Sicaran options released before November but I don't think that is likely at this point.

I also finished up the remaining four space marines for the tactical squad but they didn't look significantly different from the other ones, so just imagine ten of them instead of six in the picture above.

The Land Raider Proteus comes out next weekend I think, it is up for pre-order on Saturday.  I'll try to get either the Spartan or the remaining Predator done before then.  That will just leave the Proteus and the whichever I don't do first left for the army for this battle to be complete.

And I have a lot of stuff to paint for Fall In before then.

After these last two tanks are done, I'm going to start working on the Battlefleet Gothic stuff.

A bit of a divergence from the Iron Warriors, but this little guy is going to be used in the 2nd game of the campaign.

The Dire Wolf is my least favorite titan design so far. I got one for the sake of completeness and the Neutron Laser looks like it has some nifty rules.

I'll probably get another one to go with my Ember Wolves as they do suffer a bit from not having any really heavy hitting weapons sometimes.

This one is for my Tiger Eyes obviously and will see service on Paramar.

Thank you!

Here is the Tyche's Lament, the Iron Warrior ship.  I decided to go with a Desolator class Battleship.  The Aix-Ro is going to be a Repulsive class grand cruiser.

Overall the Iron Warriors are going to have 6 ships, this battleship and 5 escorts, I think.  The Alpha Legion will just have two, the grand cruiser and a regular cruiser.  This is more ships that the narrative states but it will make for a more interesting game.

The slab-sided ship seemed to hang in the void, its black and metal armour plates were an abomination to any sense of aesthetics but looked as though they were just the thing to stop planet smashing lance blasts or kilometer long torpedoes.

Vitripius Kril looked up to the Captain of the Aix Ro.  He had just reported the appearance of the IVth Legion flotilla.  The Captain looked at the ship, it barred the way to Paramar V and so it was a nuisance that must be removed.

"Destroy them," he said.

The Aix Ro responded instantly, beams of light and massive shells streaked across the void to slam into the Iron Warrior's flagship.

Explosions erupted along the front of the Tyche's Lament as the Alpha Legion barrage liquified meters of adamantium armour and sent them whipping away into the void, turning into spheres of near-impenetrable metal as the heat bled away from them.

The momentary surprise that accompanied the barrage from fellow Astartes was quickly replaced by rage. The scowl that spread across the scarred face of Kyr Vhalen would have caused his crew to tremble if it had been directed at them, as they knew they were to be the means of avenging the insult it emboldened them.  The Iron Warrior battleship was then moving after their new prey, the escorts that had initially backed away from the attack now moving in to support.

The two Alpha Legion ships moved to intercept the fast-moving escorts and blew one after another apart or left them drifting through the void as gas venting and burning hulks.

It did not deter Vhalen from his target and soon he was astern the Alpha Legion ships, as bomber craft kept the crew busy the Tyche's Lament pounded the Aix Ro with volley after volley.

Eventually the two Alpha Legion ships split up in the hopes that they would force the Iron Warriors to guard their flank, but Vhalen was implacable.

The Alpha Legion mission was not wholly lost.

While parts of the ship were drifting away and significant engine damage had been sustained the XXth legion poured resourced into keeping the ship together for long enough to deliver their precious cargo to the surface of Paramar V.

Two waves of Alpha Legion terminators were beamed down to the planet, right into the Paramar Nexus, to being to dismantle the Mechanicum leadership there and leave the rest of the system in a confused state while the Alpha Legion main attack began.

But those were the only two waves of attackers the XXth legion would get.  As it passed above the planet the Tyche's Lament continued to batter it with planet shattering attacks.

First the shield generators were destroyed and then beams cut through main support columns to the bridge, with fires burning throughout the ship now the bridge tower, being above the planet but affected by its gravity, was pulled down into the hull of the ship and the whole thing came apart.

As the Alpha Legion fought on the ground in the Paramar Nexus they were unaware of the impressive shooting stars that were all that was left of the Aix Ro, burning  even if the thin atmosphere of Paramar V.

It was a lot of fun.  Our next game is going to be a Titanicus game.  It will be the attack of the Tiger Eyes on the War Griffons.  We are going to do a double game with a reinforced maniple of Furreans in each of the games vs. a maniple of Gryphonicus.

It will probably be a Gryphonicus Warlord with 4 Reavers on one side vs. a Furreans Warlord, two reavers a warbring and a warmaster and then the other game is likely to be two Gryphonicus Warhounds and 3 Reavers vs. 4 Tiger Eyes Warhounds and a Dire Wolf.

After the third turn of each game, we'll see if enough titans have been destroyed to merge the two into a large game.

I got a unit finished for the second Paramar campaign game for this upcoming Saturday.

This is a unit of House Perdaxia Questoris knights.  They will be joining the Certastus knights I already have for House Perdaxia.

All three knight armors are equipped with the melta weapon option.

One of them also has the chest mounted meltagun.  So at close range these guys should be quite deadly and not something enemy titans will be able to ignore.

Although they do lack any long-range sting.

Next up is another unit of Questoris, this time for House Rajha.

With the Alpha Legion's attempts to end the Paramar campaign with a surgical strike in shambles there was no choice but to mount a full-scale invasion of Paramar V.

The loyalist world had vast reserve of ammunition and fuel so a siege was out of the question for the XXth Legion. One massive assault with overwhelming force delivered as quickly as possible was their only recourse.  With the resources of an entire Astartes Legion, one Titan Legio, a Forge World and two knight houses behind them the coiled serpent struck.

A race was now on.  The Traitor fleet was well beyond the system and had to burn their engines without concern for safety to beat the Mechanicum forces of Gryphonne IV as they prepared to defend the system placed in their control.  The Alpha Legion long range auspexes could detect the erection of void shields across Paramar V and as they got closes the thrumming pulse of Titan engines starting and pumping energy through the body of the massive war engines.

Slower moving traitor Mechanicum vessels were towed by the faster moving XXth Legion ships and soon the two enemies were obscured from each other by the detonations of planet rupturing lance beams on impregnable void shields and the explosion of ordinance in the thing atmosphere of the planet as counter batteries brought down anything the Traitors sent.

The attack of the Alpha Legion was multifaceted, however.  Soon three frigates drove straight through the atmosphere of the planet, their weapons blazing but causing no more damage than the fire storm created by the friction between the massive ships and the planetary atmosphere.

With no way to target such close, fast-moving objects, despite their size, the planetary defenses were of less use to save the loyalist forces than the intrinsic gravity of the planet.

The massive ships started to come apart this close to the surface of the planet, ripped apart by their own massive weight.

Only one escaped but the suicidal attack was enough to tear a hole in Paramar V's defenses.

Soon massive landers were touching down on the planet's surface, their ramps shaking the ground as they fell to the ground.

The ground would quake again as the titans of Legio Fureans marched towards their destination.

Hearing the war horns of their enemy the crews of the War Griffons were shocked to see that the enemy contained fellow Titan Legions.  As the sable and gold titans appeared the Legio Gryphonicus sounded their own war horns and stood their ground over the open desert near Landing Zone Secundus.

The Blood Hunger strode towards the right flank of the line of loyalist titans.  The heavy booming noise of the Mori Quake cannon firing overhead from (http://Beyurs Cynrak)echoed down the plain as the shells landed among the enemy, blasting knight armours to pieces and shaking the ground where they stood.

In the center Cyra Bazhirr backed up a maniple commanded by Alfair Mustar.   The mighty Warmaster titan strode behind the Warlord titan the glow of its plasma weaponry heralded the destructive force about to be unleashed on the loyalist line.

The deafening collapse of void shields ripped across the plain.  A War Griffon Reaver was ripped apart by the plasma weaponry of Cyra Bazhirr in one volley.

But the loyalists were not helpless in the face of the tide of enemy titans.  The Argentum Lamina charged towards the enemy, smashing a massive chainfist into the torso of the Larine Mor, smashing through the armour before discharging its melta cannon at point blank range into the fusion reactor of the traitor engine.  The Tiger Eyes' Reaver staggered backwards as its systems overloaded, shutting down one after another before collapsing backwards, sending rust-tinged dust into the thin atmosphere.

The rest of the loyalist center targeted Alfair Mustar, ripping away the void shields from the Warlord titan. As the smaller titans fell and the Warlord was vulnerable Cyra Bazhirr strode forward to take the brunt of the enemy fire.

Alone the Warmaster titan was able to destroy the loyalist Warlord but couldn't be everywhere and the Argentum Lamina attacked the vulnerable rear of the Alfair Mustar.  After suffering repeated damage the Warlord couldn't sustain any more punishment and shut down when the melta-cannon from the loyalist reaver ripped away the internal structures of the titan's legs, power conduits hung uselessly and drained all the energy from the massive machine, its arm weapons sagged as the machine shut down.

It wasn't enough and, undamaged, Cyra Bazhirr strode towards the Nexus it's weapons undiminished in their destructive capabilities.

On the traitor right flank the waves of knights and titans met with success after success as the light loyalist maniple.  The loyalists pushed back and the Tiger eyes were not unscathed as they caused the collapse of the Loyalist left.

The Alpha Legion tank column pushed on, moving to full speed now that the titan battle was over, eager to get into the Nexus itself to end the fighting in the Paramar system for good.

However, while their approach was devoid of titanic opposition, it was not to be uncontested . . .

I got the last of the Predators done for the Iron Warriors. All that is left for them now is the Land Raider Spartan.

This gives me 3 Sicarans, 3 predators, 1 Kratos and 1 Land Raider proteus so far.

I'm working on some Alpha Legion troops now too.  Hopefully I'll have 10 infantry and a rhino done before the weekend.

And the first Alpha Legion contingent rolls off the line.

Alpha Legion colours are pretty easy to recreate with contrast paints now. All I did was spray them black, then metallic and then used the contrast Turquois on them.  Then it was just the details left.  I finished all ten figures sans basing in a day and I was on-call that day.

I'm working on a rhino for them now too.  Hopefully that will be done by the end of the day today.  I haven't decided whether to concentrate on that or the Iron Warriors Land Raider Spartan.

The Iron Warriors force is finally finished with 10 days to spare.

The last element is this Land Raider Spartan.  I've had it the whole time, actually, it was the first model that I had for this force.  I got it in one of the four starter sets I bought.  This is the last of the Spartans of those too.  I've done one for my  White Scars, my Thousand Sons and my Rout as well.

I'll have to take a picture of all of them when the weather improves, but this gives the Iron Warriors a total of 9 AFVs: 7 tanks and 2 APCS.

I also bought a land raider proteus when I was at my FLGS yesterday, just in case we need one for the XXth Legion force, if not my World Eaters can always use another Land Raider.

Or time to get back to my White Scars so I'll have enough to fight these guys in a Tallarn game later.

Meanwhile, as promised, here are pics of the lot of them.

This is the whole force.  It is a tank company backed up with two squads from an armoured infantry company.  The Sicaran in the front is the commander.  There is a platoon of three predators and behind them a platoon of two sicarans.  There is also a Kratos platoon of one tank.  On the right is a tactical squad inside a land raider and on the left is a Siege-Terminator squad inside a land raider Spartan.

In less than a week they will be taking the field against the Alpha Legion traitors defending the Paramar Nexus.

Title: Re: Paramar Project - Third Game battle report up.
Post by: Pictors Studio on January 29, 2023, 04:22:48 PM
Our third Paramar campaign game was yesterday.  We had 8 players during the course of the game.

The Alpha Legion force was:

1 Land Raider Spartan
1 Land Raider Proteus
   10 Alpha Legion tactical squad
1 Land Raider Proteus Explorator
   10 Alpha Legion tactical squad
3 Rhinos - each with 10 Alpha Legion tactical squad
1 Sicaran
3 Predators variously armed.
10 Jet bikes in two squads, 1 squad with 5 multi-meltas, 1 squad with 5 Heavy bolters

The Iron Warriors had 3 Sicarans, 3 predators, 1 land raider proteus, 1 land raider spartan, 1 Kratos, 10 siege terminators, 10 tactical marines as pictured above.

The scenario.

4x8 foot table.

Alpha Legion goal - get more than half their infantry off the far side of the board, they start 24" on the short board edge.

Iron Warriors come in staggered

Sicarans first turn
Predators second turn
land raiders and kratos third turn.

They arrive in the middle 3 feet of the long board edge on the flank of the XXth legion line of march.

The three IVth Legion Sicarans arrived and ran into trouble right away.  They managed to push the jet bikes with the multimeltas back, which helped but were just able to position two of their tanks to get mostly snap shots on the approaching Alpha Legion.

The Alpha Legion advance on a wide front attempting to shield the more vulnerable rhinos with the Land Raiders.

The first round of Alpha Legion fire proves especially deadly.  The Iron Warriors commander is cooked alive in his tank as a predator conversion beam pierces the hull and causes the ammunition to explode.  The other tanks are damaged in the fusilade.

When the second wave arrives two Iron warrior tanks are already burning.  The initial attack from the Predators proves largely desultory, and while some damage is done, no enemy are disabled.

The Alpha Legion push on in an attempt to get to the other side of the table, always keeping their Land Raiders between the advance of the Iron Warriors and their rhinos.

The predators fail to make much of an impact on the XXth Legion column and soon many of the reinforcement tanks are burning as well.  At this point the Iron Warriors have lost 4 tanks and have not destroyed a single Alpha Legion tank in exchange.  They have killed two jet bikes.

The final wave of reinforcements arrives with the Land Raider proteus driving straight into the enemy formation, the marines within charging forward to attack the Alpha Legion Harrowmaster.

But it was just some Alpha Legion shenanigans and the commander was not where he appeared. The Iron Warriors were somewhat stuck but tried to make the best of a bad situation by firing on the remaining jet bikes.

At this point the Iron Warriors have managed to move one of their Predators into a position to fire on the vulnerable rhinos, destroying one.  The Alpha Legionnaires inside escape their wrecked vehicle and run towards their objective undaunted.

As the Land Raider Spartan moves into position, the IVth Legion finally starts being able to punch back with some force.  A second rhino is destroyed and the predators are forced to move into position to defend the advancing infantry.

The two Alpha Legion Land Raiders surge forward to try to get to their objective and make themselves a more obvious target than the remaining rhino but not before the Iron Warriors destroy one of the predators.  Meanwhile the Iron Warriors infantry engage the Alpha Legion bikers and the Harrowmaster moves to pull the jetbikes out of the melee.

The last of the Iron Warriors' predators is destroyed while the Kratos takes to the high ground to be able to target more of the enemy force.

The scrum with the bikers comes to an end when the Alpha Legion Harrowmaster kills three of the Iron warrior marines.

With all but two of their AFVs destroyed, the Iron Warriors are still not finished.  Emerging from the Land Raider spartan is a force of Siege Terminators.  They barged their way forward reducing a unit of Alpha Legion to scattered pieces of ceramite and shattered bodies.

After weathering the return fire of almost the entire remaining Alpha Legion force the last of the Terminators strike causing serious attrition to a second unit of Alpha Legion. The Spartan and the Kratos, almost unhindered, take advantage of the enemies distraction by destroying the final rhino and one of the enemy Land Raiders.

The Alpha Legion still surge forward and manage to destroy the Kratos.

With only one remaining APC the Alpha Legion force has been significantly slowed on their way to their objective but still have significant force to make a difference.

Overall it was a minor Alpha Legion victory.

Title: Re: Paramar Project

We have our last Paramar game next Saturday, the 22nd.  We'll be doing the first Alpha Legion assault on the Paramar Nexus.  It will be 20 Alpha Legion terminators and a Praetor against the mechanicum forces in a labyrinth controlled by the loyalists.

Here are some of the traitor terminators.

These were some really sweet models to do.  The kit has an alternate arm so if you don't want the conversion beamer you can give them all volkite pistols.  It doesn't give you an extra shoulder pad though.  If they had put one more shoulder pad in the kit you could have magnetized the arm and then switched them out.

For example, in this game having more volkite pistols may have been more advantageous as the beamer is much more of a long range weapon and it will be a pretty confined space.

Still pretty cool looking figs.

I'll take plenty of pictures of the game and then ultimately post a write-up about the whole campaign and how to re play it.

The leader of the strike force is finished.  It is the Alpha Legion Praetor in Cataphractti armour.

A pretty neat model. I like the Lerneans more, but this model is pretty sleek too.

There is going to be a lot of Volkite in this game.

The final battle in our Paramar campaign saw the Alpha Legion strike force on the Paramar Nexus slaughtered as they attempted to storm the complex.

Lead by a Praetor, 20 Alpha Legion terminators moved through the Mechanicum labyrinth.

The defenders were not about to let the Traitors off easy.  Using their weapons and also their ability to control the base itself they stoutly resisted the XXth Legion advance.

Initially the Alpha Legion terminators, who were better equipped for close up fighting, had some difficulty in engaging the enemy, who had longer ranged weaponry.

The one conversion beamer they had was the only thing that could fire in the early stages of the fight.

The Mechanicum advanced to bring the majority of their weapons to bear and were still out of range of their Astartes enemies.

The Mechanicum opened the floors up underneath the attackers, had pop-up defense turrets that fired on them and unleashed monstrous robots that came right out of the walls to attack them.

The Alpha Legion veterans did not lose many to these attacks, but the few they lost were important given how outnumbered the attackers were.

Eventually the Alpha Legion were able to get into assault range.

The Praetor and the terminators made short work of the Skittarii defenders.

Even the monstrous robots that emerged from the very walls of the compound were dealt with efficiently by the traitors. The resultant explosions of the automatons were often more deadly than their attack capability.

And the surprise of the attacks slowed the Alpha Legion assault and allowed the other Mechanicum forces to redeploy to get out of the range of the massive armoured marines.

As the Alpha Legion Praetor got into range of the control room the Mechanicum forces sealed off the corridor behind him.

Although he fought well his attack futile without support.

One by one the Alpha legion terminators are brought down.

As they struggle into the last corridor the Alpha Legion face certain annihilation but still strike back at the foe with everything they can.

The forces of Gryphonne ensure that there will be no escape as they reconfigure the base to allow for the quick movement of some of their remaining forces from one side of the compound to the other.

Ultimately the last terminator was killed and the base was free to prepare for the next attack from the allies-turned-enemies, but this time they would have reinforcements from the IV Legion at their side.

This was the last game of our Paramar Campaign.  The forces involved in the assault were based on the first game and how long the Alpha Legion ship was able to remain in orbit around Paramar V.  Not long enough as it turns out.

The game played out the way the "historical" battle occurred, with the Alpha Legion strike force leading a very bloody, but ultimately futile attack on the Nexus.

The Alpha Legion were outnumbered by more than 2:1 in models and about 1500 pts to about 1300 pts.

The Mechanicum were also allowed to make d3 modifications to the table each turn.

Those modifications could be:

1. Drop the floor.  One section of the table could have the floor drop out from any models on it.  Those models had to make an Initiative check or plummet to their doom.  Given that they were tough-as-nails terminators, their doom wasn't so assured and if any model that fell rolled a 6 on a d6 they were able to survive and cause some havoc below.  In that case future in future turns the Mechanicum would roll d3-1 to see how many modifications they could make.

2. Bring on reinforcements.  The Mechanicum could open the walls of the compound to attack with any of the Automata they had that were on 50 mm or larger sized bases.  These creatures were deemed to be too big to move down the hall so could only fight from the position where they emerged.

3. Pop-up defense turret.  This was an autocannon that could shoot with BS 3.  It had a 6 toughness, 2 wounds and no save.

4. Move sections of the corridors.  The Mechanicum could seal off sections, move other pieces and so forth to make the progress of the Alpha Legion more difficult.

As they could obviously just seal off the objectives on the first couple of turns they had to be fairly gentlemanly about how they did this and I was pleased to see that they used the rules the way they were intended rather than abuse them in any way.

Thanks guys!  We had a very good time with this campaign and running through the games gave us some good ideas about how to change things so that we can do it even better next time.

I'm writing up the scenarios and any special rules we used so that other people can play it too.

We want to run something at Adepticon next year and this is one of the projects in consideration.

I think this would be a popular game at Adepticon.  Looks like it was fun.
