Title: Full late Roman legion (Comitatenses) 36/1100 [+70 auxiliaries]
Post by: lord marcus on September 27, 2022, 02:52:44 PM
I'm painting an entire roman legion from the Wargames Atlantic Decline and fall range. The goal of this project is three-fold:

1. To create a unique studio army showcasing the decline and fall range that I sell on McDougalldesigns3d.com

2. To Create a visual representation of a full roman legion that can also be used at conventions and events in various historical systems.

3. For fun, and as a pallete cleanser between groups of commission items.

Current painted total is 16 out of a planned initial 1100

Nice!  Will you have decals for the shields?

I am mulling over whether this should be my next project as well.

Wow, quite an ambition! Do you have a legion in mind or is it going to be a generic one? Also what century for? (The helmets you have chosen for your initial batch are typical for the 3rd Century. Not sure if Comitatenses was a thing until later.)

1100 figures?  :o I admire your ambition.

If it was me I'd say 'this is a placeholder, please check back in six years time'.  :)

That is a big target, but you made a good start there. I never realised that wargames Atlantic set had a variety of headwear, including the late 3rd century style. I had only seen the Late helmets used.

Roommate and I were up late watching the first few episodes of The sandman.

I had some artistic inspiration and started working on some of the numeri before bed.

Certainly an ambitious project.  What are you basing the soldier spacing on?  As I understand it we are not really sure how spaced apart the ranks and files would be.

1. Personal experience in a shieldwall formation.

2. 50mm base frontage, mainly due to spacing for the shields.

8 legionaries with Spears and shields are on the painting desk.

Another 24 are primed.

And I'm currently de-spruing the remainder of the sprues I own to see what I can make out of them.

Oh, and I unearthed two Palatini Comitatenses I built months ago as a test.

I'm currently out, but I will endeavor to get more photos when I get home.

For those who are not aware, the first stage of the project here is centurio Ii with 100 troops, of which 20 are painted.

Concept for a Palatini Comitatenses officer that I need to finish by using greenstuff to resculpt the cloak. (Edit: holy crap run on sentence batman.)

I've gotten work done on 16 more legionaries, and just recently completed this first base of Saggitarii. Made from gripping beast dark age archers and Wargames Atlantic late Roman heads.

Yes I am. The main project is a commitatenses legion.

The Victrix and Wargames Atlantic will be a great advantage to you then!

I built a eastern army and have started my western army now. Mostly Musketeer/Footsore, some black tree, old glory, gripping beast and foundry.

Have a scroll through my blog for some simple Shield designs you can paint yourself rather than transfers.

Any specific article you would recommend?

I'll fully engaged in using wargames Atlantic, but I intend to mix in the occasional few boxes of victrix

16 more Romans, added to centurio II.

I've discovered lowered spears do not like the legs of preceding ranks. For display purposes, I will be sourcing a set of "spacer bases", which will help me add in combat vignettes.

Could I ask you what paints are you using, not sure if they are Gw's Contrast or the army painter version?

This is going to be great, but also it’s going to be a marathon! Any bets on how long the thread is finally going to be? ;€

Not currently. Probably 20-30 more pages. I guess we'll see how long it takes me. I'll keep updating.

Cygor brown contrast from GW, generally. I'll mix in the occasional set of garagraks sewer or some other brown for variety.

The intention initially was to mainly use Wargames Atlantic Decline and fall kits, however the army builders have lagged behind in production so I will most likely add in other manufacturers for variation.
