Title: Which figures suitable for Japanese in Manchuria?
Post by: Pompier on September 29, 2022, 08:29:32 AM
Hi all - are there any 28mm/25mm figures suitable for back of beyond Japanese in the 1920's and 1930's?

I have seen the fantastic Kwangtung Army that warlordfish made from the copplestone BoB Chinese in fur caps - but are any other figures suitable?

I know Pulp miniatures produce a few Japanese but theyre not super economical for making a force.

Thanks - Pomp

I have been searching for these as well but ended in doing conversions of Copplestone Bolsheviks in greatcoat with Chinese and Warlord Japanese heads

I think you can use Japonese troops from the russo-japonese war of 1905 as proxy with the 1918 uniform colours.

If your people are mainly Copplestone or around that size don't make the mistake I made and buy the Tsuba Russo-Japanese war Japanese. They are way too small. And not even right for the 1920s either. You could just use the Copplestone Chinese and paint them a yellowy khaki colour instead of grey. Their uniform wasn't that dissimilar.

Japanese uniforms changed significantly before the First World War and again in the 1930s.  Russo-Japanese War figures really won't do.

The only dedicated range of troops in M.30 uniform I can think of are the Company B ones for Nomohan. I wouldn't recommend the sculpts and they are likely to be titchy next to Copplestone figures but your mileage may vary.

The aforementioned greatcoat mash up with Japanese helmets and arms is a good one. IIRC there was an article in WI or possibly the Warlord site by a chap who did just that. If you fancy non-greatcoated versions then Eureka did a range of Chinese in puttees many moons ago that with suitable head and equipment swaps will look make decent proxies. For the 1920s and arguably much of the following decade you really want flat caps rather than helmets, the helmet not becoming a standard item until the early 'thirties.

There may be some mileage in converting the Wargames Atlantic plastic WW1 Germans. Not tried it myself but I suspect you could get the arms to fit. The WG WW2 Japanese come with a wealth of personal equipment you can use for conversions.

Some time ago Wargames Atlantic announced a Japanese set for the early 20th Century.  They would be plastics so  there's conversion potential. The only thing is there release schedule can be a bit erratic. They also have some Russians from the same period in development.
