Title: Upcycled Tower Keep on the Cheap.
Post by: Puuka on September 30, 2022, 09:14:57 PM
So, I recently started building a tower keep from basically garbage.
Pink foam was rescued from a house build (asked before I took it)
The black and white foam is from thoroughly washed meat trays
The white foam on the top of the big tower is thinner foam from a takeout container.
There's drink crystals and Pringles cans in there
Main doors are made from coffee stir sticks and square doweling from dollar store. Small bead for the door handle. Smaller black door on the upper section is just meat tray foam (and a small bead)

I picked up a cheap hot wire cutter from Wal-Mart on their online store for $16. It's not a fancy Proxon, but it works for making bricks and small cuts (like the round cuts for under the Pringles can)
The only thing I didn't cheap on was Gorilla Glue for gluing the pink foam layers together. Black Magic Craft said it was one of the few that would work for it.

Just glued the bricks on using dollar store white glue.

I still need to do the small side tower and will probably be using smaller mismatched bricks (to make it look like an after thought that was kind of thrown on)
I also need to figure out how to do the top area of the main tower. Thinking of doing battlements but not sure of the best way to do it. Thinking of cutting layers out of more meat tray foam and building the tops of them up out of the left over bricks from the main tower.
Thinking of doing a magnetic based peaked topper for the Pringles can and an Observatory Telescope that can be swapped out.

That’s looking very promising! It’s a lot of work putting the stonework on the outside of the tubes, but it’s hard to argue with the results. I’m looking forward to seeing it as it comes together, and the final model. It seems like it will be a good gaming piece, too.

Lovely work, & my kind of price range. Well done. :)

Looking good

As to the top of the main tower - I’d leave it as it is - wizards don’t need hand rails!

Looks good.  It blends in nicely with the terrain.

Your circular tower reminded me I just saw a crafting jig tool from shifting lands that is designed to make brick strips.  The video below showcases it.  It may be helpful for your future projects.

Thanks
