Title: Does anyone have book recommendations on the Italian Wars?
Post by: Dargonsploof on October 06, 2022, 09:50:26 AM
I'm looking for some resources on the italian wars, its combatants and the regions it was fought in. I am currently collecting landsknechts miniatures and am thinking of making a force of the italian black bands as well but some understanding of how these would have been equipped, dressed and fought would help as well as some recommendations fpr miniatures that would suit the italian black bands would greatly help.

Helion produce a 4-volume series on the Italian Wars and Osprey a Men-at-Arms book about Italian "Renaissance" armies plus books on Landsknechts.

Written at the later part of the wars published 1519ish

The Art of War (Machiavelli book)

Wargames Soldiers and Strategy issue 81 was themed around Italian Wars, so articles with overview as many armies were made up of Mercenaries the Condottiere.

Also Wargames Illustrated 330 had some articles as mercenaries which could also be of use.

Condottiere set of wargame rules OOP lovely Hardback book with nice minis from Wargames Foundry pictured. Both minis and book OOP.

For figures you could look at Artizan ( Swiss and Landsknechts), Steel Fist Miniatures and The Assault Hroup. The latter two both produce specific Italian Wars'ranges, but aren't cheap at nearly £2 per figure. If cost is an issue Perry plastics plus their metals can give a nice army. I would also track down "Pete's Flags" for your standards.

Oman: Art of war in the 16th century. Old, but still good and very comprehensive. Available fairly cheap second hand

The Helions are very good. I really enjoy Oman, but it's quite a venerable text and it is good to look at modern material where it exists.

Thanks for some more suggestions. The landsknecht osprey was quite good though the renaissance italy armies one didn't seem to help me unfortunately I'll hopefully have some of these other books soon.
