Title: Re: Nozza_uk does Metaluna Mutants
Post by: nozza_uk on November 04, 2022, 12:55:11 PM
As mentioned on another thread, I found some 3D miniatures designs by a US designer called Big Mr Tong. His designs are based on some of the most popular sci-fi franchises out there. Fortunately, I found a UK based 3D printing service - https://www.3dkingdoms.co.uk/ (https://www.3dkingdoms.co.uk/) - and took a chance by making a small order.

First up, I ordered some 28mm 'Space Orcs', where I got 5 figures for £7.49. These are obviously based on Gamorrean guards from Star Wars.

Here's a size comparison picture.

Left to Right: Imperial Assault Officer, Space Orc, Diehard Miniatures not Mando, 2 x Space Orcs and a Frostgrave Jedi (Wizard).

The Space Orcs seem under sized compared to the Gamorrean guards seen in The Return of the Jedi, however, they look like the slimmed down guards seen in The Book of Bob Fett. Looking at my 'Mando' figure, I suspect that's 32mm rather than 28mm.

Next up, was a bunch of  28mm 'Shock troopers'. Again, these are based on Stormtroopers from Star Wars and I got 10 figures for £13.50.

Another size comparison picture.

Left to Right: Frostgrave Jedi (Wizard), Shock trooper, Imperial Assault Officer, 2 x Shock troopers and an Imperial Assault Stormtrooper.

Here the Shock troopers look to be a better fit. Compared to the Imperial Assault Stormtrooper, the 3D prints are slightly thinner and not as 'chunky'. Heightwise, they seem a good fit and would look fine on the table.

Overall, I am pleased with these 3D prints. Although, the Space orcs are smaller than expected, the Shock troopers will fit in nicely with my Imperial Assault Empire figures. Given the cost per figure (between £1.40 to £1.50), I would recommend them. Those look great.  Thanks for putting up the comparison shots.  I've been ordering the same Mr Big Tong figs from JS Wargaming Printing here in the states for a similar price.
https://wargamerprinting.com/

The key with printed SW figs is whether you're wanting them in scale with Imperial Assault and WOTC in 28mm or with Legion (around 34mm).   The ones you and I purchased look like they're in IA/WOTC 28mm scale which is also quite a bit more affordable.

I'm quite happy with the 28mm figures I purchased.  In addition to being a fantastic bargain the sculpts are good with 3d printing allowing crisper and less chunky details compared to the vinyl used in IA and WOTC. They are fairly true-scale which results in rather small-looking weapons that may be more fragile, but they do look great. I'm hoping to get my hands on a Legion fig and do a SW figure roundup for the blog at some point.

I've used 3Dkingdoms to have some of Mr Big Tong's figures rescaled to 20mm. Nice figures and a great company to work with. Two thumbs up for both!

I see JS Wargaming Printing has some additional Star Wars options that I've not seen available with various UK 3D printers.  :'(

Now if only I could find someone who does Star Trek Sculpts. It would be great to find some Jem'Hadar with a Vorta, some Cardassians etc etc.

Awaiting my order that I placed yesterday for some of the same figures - but in 15 mm.  Proprietor very kindly also worked to get the Heroes and Villains into 15 mm for me - except one rather small figure he was not able to get adjusted to his liking.

Being printed in resin, I would think the shipping to the UK can't be all that prohibitive.  I've just accepted the realities and bit the bullet and placed a variety of orders from UK to US (west coast, even).  United States Postal Service (USPS) has some flat rate shipping boxes for US that must have some application to international shipping.

Nice job on your "orcs" paint job.

Very nice.  Would you mind sharing your paint method for them?

Sure. It's mostly Contrast paints, but here's the order I applied the paint.

Undercoat - Halfords White Primer.
Skin - Contrast Orc Flesh.
Fur Pants - Contrast Gore Grunta Fur.
Torso - Contrast Snakebite Leather or Garaghak's Sewer.
Belts & Sandal Straps - Contrast Wyldwood.
Armour - Army Painter True Copper.
Weapon Handles - Contrast Basilicanum Grey.
Blades -  Army Painter Weapon Bronze.
Teeth - GW Skull White.
Wash of Nuln Oil.

Hope that helps.

Post by: nozza_uk on February 06, 2023, 04:43:31 PM
Another thread highlighted a 3D sculptor called RavenX (https://ravenx.gumroad.com/ (https://ravenx.gumroad.com/)), who has a UK distributor called The Lazy Gamer (https://www.thelazygamer.co.uk/ (https://www.thelazygamer.co.uk/)).

RavenX has done loads of Star Trek designs - including figures wearing the movie uniforms from Star Trek 2 thru to 6!!! All available as 28mm or Legion sized.

So here's the first figures painted up from my order.

Title: Starfleet ship bridge designed by RavenX
Post by: nozza_uk on April 17, 2023, 11:37:05 AM
I know Star Wars tends to dominate discussions on this board, but here is something from the other big sci-fi franchise.

Taken me a while to get this finished. A 3d printed Starfleet bridge with the crew wearing uniforms from the TWOK era.

Tried to go with a colour scheme that reflects the movie era, but lending itself to future iterations eg LCARS screens etc.

The great thing is the main viewscreen and the smaller screens allow you to slide in your own images; so that they can be changed depending on the need.

Title: Re: Nozza_uk does the final frontier. Not Andorians
Post by: nozza_uk on April 24, 2023, 10:04:24 AM
Today we have Lost Heresy "Billorians". Printed by TwistedPinnacle3D via Etsy.

Of course, any Star Trek fan will recognise them as Andorians. A few fleeting appearances in The Original Series, they really got shown some love in Enterprise.

Ever since I played the FASA RPG back in the 80s, I have always had a soft spot for this blue skinned race and it was good to find some proxies for them.

More Star Trek miniatures. Depending on what era of Star Trek you watch, these are either the main protagonist or reluctant allies.

Yes, I'm talking about the Klingons. Some more RavenX figures painted up to create aggro with the Federation and Romulans.

Title: Re: Nozza_uk does the final frontier. Introducing the Monster Maroons
Post by: nozza_uk on May 02, 2023, 10:57:09 AM
Introducing the Monster Maroons, the double-breasted, military cut uniform that made its first appearance in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (TWOK), and lasted through six more films (if you count Generations), and even showed up a few times Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Argueably, my favourite of all the Star Trek uniforms and one that has rarely been seen in miniature format.

Again these are RavenX designs that have been 3d printed.

The design is by RavenX - https://ravenx.gumroad.com/ (https://ravenx.gumroad.com/) - they do lots of Star Wars designs.
I had them locally printed (UK) by https://www.thelazygamer.co.uk/ (https://www.thelazygamer.co.uk/).

yeah they look great I'm a big fan of the imp army for gaming.  I've been amassing figures including some prints in a slightly larger scale.  Mind telling me how tall a standing straight figure is to the top of the head? cheers!

I'm currently travelling and won't be able to measure for a few days. However, this image may help. This was taken when I was I scoping some Xenos Rampant armies.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKgl0sQEvouBbic5099hRv-btl4nmfjiFATKm3puscnKQMJT7n8wWGH0wCIxyUia-6c3dZxV7fXtu8iDUvRXGrxIVB9R2QEHWoIvreETCHJTuas4bvUIGkDRkp8MlDzdwH7HbaBkzCFs2tctAgfdApiexK1vbDzVrMkzYiPvf09BXQmRfd0sjLsn86/s1600/IMG-20230615-WA0000.jpg)

The Imperial Army figures are between the sets of Imperial Assault Stormtroopers. I found the figures not wearing body armour or backpacks tended to be slightly bigger than those wearing body armour (I put that down to the printing company I used).

Hope that helps.

ok thanks Nozza I want to scale them up to 40mm or 1/43 as I've been mucking around in that scale for awhile

If it helps, by default the RavenX Star Wars designs are scaled to 1/47 Legion scale and I had them resized and printed for 28mm. So, I imagine they could scale up to 1/43.

I've had some darkfire design figures upscaled a bit. They can come out quite hefty and like most legion figures are very short in the legs :) So I have given myself the unnecessary task of cutting and extend leg length to reach 1/43 without getting too hefty.

Anyhoo sorry don't mean to hijack your thread. Thanks for the inspiration I hope you post more pics soon!

No worries. Great to have the questions. I'm trying to get a summer Robin Hood project painted up and finished and then normal service with Star Trek & Wars will resume.

Hijacking my own thread! As part of my travels last week, I came across The Gamers Emporium in Swansea. They've got quite a few Star Wars Legion: A-A5 Speeder Truck Units going for £20. So, if anyone wants a cheapish vehicle for their Star Wars games, get down to South Wales.

Strictly speaking, this should be on the Post Apocalyspe page.
Given this thread is now at 5 pages, it seemed crazy to start another thread. Also, I seen enough Asylum sci-fi/disaster films where troops wear similar looking armour.

Anyway, a quick switch to the world of The Walking Dead and some 3D printed 'The Commonwealth' troops (printed by 3DKingdoms). These troops appeared in the last couple of seasons of The Walking Dead.

Look away if you don't want to see a Star Wars toy being converted.
.

Ok, warned you.

A few years back, I managed to pick up an old Star Wars Mini-Rig toy from eBay. Being inspired by the Imperial tank used in Rogue One, I set about converting the Mini-Rig to something I could use for 28mm gaming.

So, with the use of some filler and plasticard I created this conversion.

I'm back from holiday and picking up my brushes again.

Back in June, I receieved an email from Anvil Industries about their forthcoming 'The Brotherhood' Pre-Order. For those of us who don't have a 3D printer, they were doing a limited print run of their 'The Brotherhood' miniatures.

Why was I interested? Well as you can see from my pictures below, they have a passing resemblance to Mandalorians from Star Wars.

So here is the first two painted up.

Title: Re: Nozza_uk does Star Trek: Away Missions
Post by: nozza_uk on August 18, 2023, 04:16:06 PM
There's a new Star Trek board game out. It's called Away Missions and the best way to describe it is as a combination of Imperial Assault and a CCG. Like Imperial Assault you have card mission boards and plastic playing figures. Like a CCG, you put together two decks of cards that you want to play during the game.

The figures themselves are approx 50mm tall and chunky. In the base set you get Riker, Data, Worf and Shelby for the Federation. You compete against the Borg led by Locutus. Currently, there's two expansions available - Klingons led by Gowron and Romulans led by Sela.

Here's my Federation away team

Thank you for your compliments - they're much appreciated.

Initially I was disappointed with size and style of the sculpts, but as I've painted them, they've really started to grow on me.

I could potentially use them in a game of Fistful of Lead, as you don't need to have many figures on the table.

Here are all of my Mandalorian type figures. The majority are from Die Hard Miniatures and include the proxy Din Djarin, Grogu, Boba Fett and Bo Katan figures you can see. The rest are from Anvil Industries and there's a solitary Wizards of the Coast figure at the back.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Wish I could take credit for the colours, but I've got to thank all the Mandalorian cosplayers out there, they provided the real inspiration for the colour schemes.

I bought and painted my first squad of Heresy Minis Sharclon back in 2014. I kicked myself when they became unavailable.
Fast forward to 2023 and they're back. Bought three squads to make up for lost time!
All four squads shown in the picture. I think I've matched a nine year old paint job successfully.

Title: Re: Nozza_uk does a mad man with a box - The Nth Doctor
Post by: nozza_uk on September 18, 2023, 01:41:47 PM
So what do you get if take an Artizan Designs 'Thrilling Tales' figure and swap a hand holding a pistol for a hand holding a Sonic Screwdriver?

The answer is the Nth Doctor. This is designed to be an incarnation of 'The Doctor' from Doctor Who. Calling him the Nth Doctor means he could be a future or past Doctor. Essentially, he's my own creation for Doctor Who gaming that gives me some flexibility for story telling without getting bogged down with continuity.

Outfit wise, the Nth Doctor is inspired by the Mortdecai costume worn by Johnny Depp in the film of the same name.

My last bit of Star Wars painting for the foreseeable future. Some Heavy Weapon Stormtroopers. Designed by MrBigTong and printed by 3dkingdoms.

They'll be useful for bulking up my Stormtrooper squads in games of Galactic Heroes, Fistful of Lead: Bigger Battles and Xenos Rampant.

That's decent amount of heavy weapons teams Nozza.  I do like the e-webs  they look great.

I'm very tempted to try transparent bases like you have. At the moment I paint mine an agnostic light tan/brown colour so they'll work everywhere. But I think transparent bases could be the solution.

How many stormtroopers do you have in total?

Title: Re: Nozza_uk jumps through a Stargate!
Post by: nozza_uk on October 16, 2023, 05:11:10 PM
Although I never watched it religiously, I have always had a fondness for Stargate SG-1. Recently, I found myself binge watching it while I was getting over a bout of Covid.

A long time ago, I picked up the 'not' Stargate figures from Hasslefree Miniatures. Although I gamed with them, I was never truly happy with their 'not Teal'c figure as it was armed two machine guns. What I really wanted was a Teal'c figure holding his famous staff weapon.

Fast forward to 2023 and you pretty much find what you want sculpted and available to be 3D printed. Sure enough, I found a Teal'c figure holding a staff weapon on Etsy. Designed by Papsikels and printed by Starlettminiatures, I bought the figure below.

Although billed as 32mm, when put on a standard 'slotta' base, the figure towered over other normal 28mm figures. So I used a thinner base. Next job was trying to match a paint job I did over 10 years ago.

Here's the result.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgJJ6F35EAa5ys7dHGYF5MxL-zKLk7wKVEEJIsxp9Jsz_VkNlc82Z71RwElGd-aUzl2bxQc5Wrk-ggxQLvUPxSSZCz8KvtNIZe9-Mpnsdxbz_J4uywofNPmfZ7rAzyxXA1llQzkoV-r6smRCT5VvkjQp-1-n4da6csr5EXQm1a9V-CgRr6xd0PTI5a4egA=w360-h640)

Mixed in with Hasslefree and The Assault Group figures.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEidVmvA9gUBepa__umNjQfLHx95cdlS5UeJ66P2mpUR1g19pva5IRRNt4X8DpYLKG-LZijx3dmpd2ky0oISv2w8AC7C2Lt9PNujjtj0wEb6wYfNtjKnDdnyjbPwMehGFN-srz-lPNz0xIM6QzcU9IAO7u6R_50V8KjfgatHvdpdY1guv04Mw9qRnYbI23E=w640-h480)

The height difference and paint job hopefully not too noticeable.

Added them to figures from the official ranges by Warlord Games and Mongoose Games (Back Middle). Wasn't until I took the picture that I realised one of the Warlord Fatties had gone AWOL.

Some more 3D printed Star Trek inspired miniatures. Figures designed by Lost Heresy and printed by TwistedPinnacle3D. This time these miniatures bear a passing resemblance to characters from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Here you can see Captain Pike as portrayed by Anson Mount and Una Chin-Riley as potrayed by Rebecca Romijn.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEguHpj1TqXZ-KmrBKaOsgEs9jKnhTu6DFgZObOprDIDgVfNC_2ZL-MVPtsq2aRQzUM39LUiE2CLSc_UCHlppy18jralO3jTs98do0YWUPNHcEZRtHZQQLBPvrWjplSjnQE42csyU4cGngbDYPFakiIDY9OCi4vLLBWXx13fkOsiLF8vHktYaTOJaqSJKT0=w640-h480)

Also, in the pack were these three crewmembers. Again, the figure with the extended arm resembles Anson Mount. The figure holding the mug looks like Dr M'Benga as portrayed by ‎Babs Olusanmokun.

This is most likely my last modelling of 2023

Over the last couple of years, we've seen an explosion in multi-part figure kits from a variety of manufacturers. This has been great for creating custom figures. However, it does leave a lot of wasted plastic parts.

Fortunately, companies (like Anvil Industries) now produce bodies/torsos/legs that allow a gamer to use those spare parts.

The two pictures below show 8 Anvil Industries bodies that have parts taken from a variety of manufacturers added to them. At a glance I can spot Frostgrave, Stargrave, Fireforge, Games Workshop and Great Escape Games parts being used.

Next up, some stalls selling some exotic fruits or vegetables.

The fruit stalls in particular are brilliant. What did you use for all the exotic goods?

Wish I could claim credit, but they came as part of the set.

No, not the characters from Star Wars  :)

Gort, the robot from the 1951 science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Probaby going to menace an errant Timelord or a starship crew on the final frontier.

Nice job on the market stalls, I've just had the same set delivered from HeadBunny Games, lovely pieces and cheap as chips.

I saw "klaatu barada nikto" and had hopes of seeing Ash "this is my boomstick" Williams!  However I also approve of Gort(s) :)

Lovely stuff, I will have to order a set of those market stalls for my own table!

Following on from Gort, here we have some 3D printed aliens based on the Martians from the 1953 film version of 'The War of the Worlds'.

Another 3D printed race of aliens.

The Mangalores appeared in the 1997 film 'The Fifth Element'.

Your Mangalores are nicely colored. The only problem with them is when they push a suddenly flashing button... :D

They look like really nice sculpts.

Have you switched varnish or something? The new additions look really shiney next to Corben & Leeloo.

I would normally apply a coat of spray anti-shine after varnishing, but the weather hasn't been warm or dry enough to apply it.

It's the curse of having 3d designers reliving their childhoods!  lol

In fairness, a lot of my interest comes from an old film and wandering if figures exist for it. Caught "Warlords of Atlantis" the other day and then discovered that someone had designed some figures based on the troops in that film. Similarly, watched "This Island Earth" and as a result I know have Metaluna mutants waiting to be painted. Of course, you start browsing online stores and it's very easy to add items to your shopping cart. Also, 3d printed is reasonably priced, 10 figures costs on average £12.50 + p&p.

The other thing I do is watch certain creators on Patreon and see what's on their pipeline. For example, BigMrTong has created the Revwien from Star Wars, as well as some very familiar looking Jabba the Hutt's human guards.

Warlords of Atlantis is described as a 1978 British adventure science fiction film, where two deep-sea explorers and their crew must survive a master race of beings and monstrous creatures when they discover the fabled city of Atlantis.

I have always had a fondness for this film and was very pleased to have recently seen it again on TV.

Of course, it got me thinking, does anybody do any figures for the film; especially the Atlantean troops? Sure enough, I found Antediluvian Miniatures did a range in metal (including a not Doug McClure) and Big Mr Tong had recreated them in 3D.

I ordered the Big Mr Tong sculpts from a 3D printer and I ordered the 'Warlord' commnader figure from Antediluvian.

One of the most famous Universal monster designs in the history of Hollywood. These aliens featured in the 1955 science fiction film This Island Earth. They once occupied the planet Metaluna and were bred for menial labour.

This Island Earth was one of those 1950s/60s films that got broadcast during the school holidays and that's where I developed my love for all those films.

When I saw that the mutants had been recreated in 3D and were available on Etsy, I jumped at the chance to get some.

Suitably creepy! As nostalgic as we can be for our old Hollywood creature features, I think streaming has been a huge boon for flicks based on our gaming interests. Whether current or soon-to-be after viewing!

STOP, please stop. If it's not bad enough that you first introduced me to Mr Big Tong's (very affordable) 3d designs in the first place. Now, just when I convince myself I do not actually need every 20th century movie alien/monster, you post up piccis of painted minis and my resolve melts away, again! lol

Nice work, keep it coming (my wallet can afford it for now at least!).

Thanks for the feedback.

There is the problem. If you know where to look, those sculpts are very affordable. One Etsy seller (with discounts) is effectively selling them for a £1 a figure. 3DKingdoms have a 10% Easter sales on at the moment too. Also, it's worth following Mr Big Tong on Patreon (it's free to do so) and you can see what's coming down the line.
