Title: Planning ahead: Build Something Competition 2023 theme discussion
Post by: Vanvlak on November 07, 2022, 11:33:06 AM
Unless anyone else offers, wishes to, or wants to, I can coordinate this again in 2023.
We usually begin with a choice of theme, so unless there are any objections, we can discuss this here.

Good, I'm rearing to have another crack the BSC  :D

And I always seem to know how to shoehorn the topic into a useable build, so I'm open to any and all suggestions. But just to get this train rolling, here are a few of mine:

- A Workplace
- Interior design
- A place of worship
- Maintainance
- A vehicle

I agree it should be useable, to which end I would argue 'a vehicle' would be a bit narrow for us ancients types. If it could be modified to allow Solomon's (or Omri's) Stables at Megiddo...

Part of the fun (for me at least ;) ) is to find ways of bending the topic in such a way that it fits your plans/ideas/requirements.

I can easily see a vehicle theme being stretched to include a chariot, siege engine, bagage train or indeed a field stable of sorts! :)

A vehicle would be narrow but "transport" might be generic enough.

I agree with this so would be happy with any theme including any of the suggestions so far. Having said that, I also have a few ideas to add to the pile:

"The breach"

"They passed this way"

"A surprise"

"Nature's Bounty"

Of value to the discussion, perhaps, is a listing of past themes:

2022 - Rest
2021 - Difficult Terrain
2020 - Wreck and Ruin
2019 - Vegetation
2018 - Ill-Advised
2017 - Flight
2015 - Fire and Ice
2012 - Water
2010 - CD
2009 - Transportation

As discussed elsewhere on LAF, A conveyance.

Other possibilities-
Armour,  Wear & tear,  Crossing an obstacle and Veteran of the War.

A conveyance would be my vote.

Another vote for a "conveyance" but NOT a working conveyance!  (need to build a crashed Star Destroyer)

I'm interested but it will depend on what the final topic turns out to be and whether I can fit into at least one of my excessive collections of miniatures.

Oh, sign me up, I love building something that I will never use later  lol

As for the theme I'm ok with anything.

Hoping to make 3rd time lucky the time I actually finish my BSC!

Also, yes. Conveyance would be an awesome theme.

2 by 2 feet game board (or 3 by 3 feet game board)

...is a good one. Applicable for all scales and categories and the potential for quite tasty entires.

Here is the updated list (sorry, work was a bit intense these weeks), including (I hope) all the suggestions from last edition, as well as those made for the coming one.
Boom
Comic
Lethal
Firepower
Mud
Vertigo
Food
Speed
Peace
Animal
Mineral
Earth
Poisonous
Spotted
Production
Noise
Exit
Small
Defence
War machine
Engine
Stealth
Decay
Obsolete
Unconventional
The breach
They passed this way
Surprise
Nature's Bounty
A Workplace
Interior design
A place of worship
Armour
Wear & tear
Crossing an obstacle
Veteran of the War
Modify message
Maintenance
Conveyance
Using a (Pringles tube/computer fan/box of matches/etc.)
2 by 2 feet game board (or 3 by 3 feet game board)
3D photography backdrop

I thought of making a poll, but it is already clear that there are one or two favourites.
I tend to agree with Hammers that a small board would be a nice option, being 100 % flexible in scope and providing scope for some incredible builds. Conveyance, slightly less because although I already have a plan (and need!) for one, it's similar to the 1st edition theme of transport - although that said, this was around a decade ago.
My personal favourite would not, I believe, be popular, as I'd go for comic or lethal; unconventional comes in close.

Even though there's something to be said for all options, I do feel that a lot of the suggestions lend themselves more to a display/diorama rather than an actual gaming piece...

Display and diorama would be very much against the tradition of the BS-competition.

Exactly - the idea is to build something (well, obviously!) which can be used in a game, whether it's a piece of scenery, a contraption or a board.
So the aim is to find a theme which people are interested in AND which fits the bill.  :D

I'm up for the next challenge. 3rd time's a charm right?  My goal remains the same, get out of the group stage.

Stealth sounds interesting but could lead to a lot of black color.
Modify message?
Natures bounty only cuz I have some ideas already
Place of worship has lots of possibilities across lots of genres

I just thought of something: a toy conversion. Just that; using a toy as a base for a gaming piece, be that terrain or gameable...

I can rock with the "place of worship" theme.  Have something that might be totally unexpected.  Would it count if I already had some work done on a piece (removal of material, nothing added yet)?

Unless it's removal of material as part of a sculpting process, not problem.
And sorry for the delay.

I might set up a small poll of a subset of options for a poll: what should I include?

I like
Include part of a toy
House of Worship
Conveyance

All three offer a tonne of possibility across many genres and sizes

Sounds really good! I love the "place of worship" and the 2 by 2 board as well. I would like to enter for the first time, is there a place with more info around how this contest works?

I'll be sending detailed instructions before it starts - but in VERY brief, you build a model from scratch over a number of weeks, post photos of progress, and do not post photos of it painted. You then send a pic of the finished painted model to the email I will circulate, and then voting happens, in a couple or three rounds.

Also - thanks for the suggested themes, all of which saw spikes of popularity since this thread began.
