Title: This is getting out of hand, now they are 6mm! YPU's star wars madness.
Post by: YPU on November 19, 2022, 06:41:02 PM
So, like many of you I'm sure, I have some friends who are wargaming curious but never had a setting or era that grabbed their attention. For me, a couple of them are low key big into star wars. Which has a number of miniatures and wargaming options out there (a third one coming out soon in 28mm soon I believe?)

...But I'm kinda set in my 6mm ways these days. Wake\s emporium to the resque, as he does a fantastic "GMO wars" line, here is the starter set and he has almost everything you'd expect.

So I got that.

Then I started talking about this and one of those friends remarked how starwars is sci-fi with napoleon era tactics really... and the same week somebody said the same of 40k, epic armageddon specifically.
Now Epic is one of my favourite rules sets, easy where it matters, crunchy where it counts etc... So I started writing army lists, cause why not play star wars in the ruleset I like! there are so many things that are a good match for the rules its fascinating, the parts just fel into place. I swear even rules for gungans and their bubble shields map nicely to imperial void shield rules.

They are far from done, but you can find them here. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ouetg04nra5kr2NWA4vzX9N0Ue43FYM9gSWB1FzeC00/edit?usp=sharing
 (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ouetg04nra5kr2NWA4vzX9N0Ue43FYM9gSWB1FzeC00/edit?usp=sharing) critique welcome.

Meanwhile, I realized; hey, nobody makes astromechs in 6mm, that's a crying shame. So I rectified that.

Tiny buggers are hard to photograph.

Also, really the clones could do with some allies, like wookies. And hey I needed something to practise sculpting fur on anyway. In the end I ended up colaborating with a friend and fellow forum member, where I create the base shape and weaponry, and he does the hair.

so those are coming along nicely, probably end up with 12+ sculpts soon.

Now you can find some very nice scout speeder bikes on thingyverse, and reading up those were in fact in use during the clone wars. We see a jedi riding one right before they are order 66'ed. She was one of the scantily clad female presenting aliens, not really my jup of tea to sculpt, but still, bikes were already done...

Meanwhile meanwhile I ordered a x-wing outrider from ebay, its missing some paint apps, I think these are factory rejects or half finished product when the line was shut down. I'm fixing up the paint on mine now, its going quite well.

In the mean mean meantime, I've actually finished painting some of those wakes miniatures from the beginning of this post, but the light isn't conductive to pictures atm so that will have to wait...

You can also get those figures at the top in 15mm.

Sure, I mean I have the files and a 3d printer, I can print them at 2:1 if I so desired. But why would you want anything else than 6mm? inconceivable I say.  :D

Really looking forwards to printing this thing, but it will take a long time so haven't found the opportunity yet.

Very cool! 6mm, huh?  :o Well, it's Star Wars after all. I look forward to a spaceport diorama for X-Wing!  :D

Thanks!

There is a chap on cults3d who has a amazing space port set available (though I doubt I can match his painting)

And I did figure, a landing spot, couple of buildings? That makes a lot mores sense in the middle of a table without further roads etc than most models, as the infrastructure is right there in the space port.

I bought some of the GMO troopers and droids in 6mm and they're really nice.

I'm very much on board with the 6mm Star Wars, I think it really suits the settings big battles. I remember playing Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds, Battlefront and Star Wars Clone Wars game (the latter while a bit ropey in areas, consisted of some cool Combined arms gameplay with multiple Tank platoons battling out combined with gunship/fighter segments with strikes on ground targets).

That explains it, I had a hard time pinning the size down  lol

I think he found the infantry a bit fragile in 6mm, and we have loads of other 10mm stuff so have plenty of terrain in that scale.

But 10mm does seem to be an uncommon scale for Sci Fi

For some of us that like 15's and don't have a 3D printer, I was just saying you can get them at other places in 15mm on Etsy.

Nice 6 mm collection.

As to 15 mm, you can get A LOT of stuff - I know, I just did, far more than I was originally planning.  Once my 'last' order arrives, I will have 49, yes, 49, distinct units of infantry for my Star Wars collection.  Sure, some of it is 'make work' or 'close enough' but plenty of it is straight up Star Wars.

What I'd most like more of in 15 mm is Star Wars derived aliens but I've managed to put together LOTS of aliens from various sources, a small number of which are Star Wars derived (unless you count units, I have a number of those that are canon).

Actually, with a replacement order for a missing item that will include a "we're sorry" pack of some additional aliens, I should be able to manage one more unit to push it to 50.  Crazy?  Of course.  It's this hobby!

And for those who may ask, my rules of choice will be Fistful of Lead: Big Battles.

Awesome work indeed; Epic Star Wars is now officially a thing :D

DZC 12mm I'd argue, being /1144 aka double dollhouses, like gundams and heavy gear figures. That being said I know plenty of people use 10 and 6 intermixed, 12-15 etc. Bases screw up the size of figures so much already that there is more leeway.

Bases screw up a lot, absolutely. The terrain I'm slowly building for DZC will do double duty in both 10- and 15mm. Most are N-scale railroad buildings (lots of Japanese stuff in there), but I've got a few HO-scaled ones which can work just as well with a bit of detail work.

DZC is being marketed as being 10mm btw...

and heavy gear, which is the same scale, has been marketed as 12mm for 20 years. Goes to show, none of us know what we are doing anyway  lol

With all these painted pictures getting posted I cant stay behind, so here are my first paint tests. I have a LOT more on the painting desk, but that will have to wait. I'm unsure how to base them. I am considering something rassy for the droids as it will contrast with all their brown tones, I might go the same for the clones. I have some great crackling red earth that I'll use if I ever get round to geonosians though.  lol

I'm still slowly hammering away at this as well, I've made some files for 6mm midget spider droids, they've come out really nice I think!

The Force is strong with this one. So much eye candy here. Great idea to use the Epic Armageddon rules. They are much underrated!

I might check some of those in 15mm…;)

Cheers!

And all of that should stand up to 15mm I'd say!
