Title: Battlegroup Pacific- Landings on Gavutu and Tanambogo 20mm
Post by: hayeswauford on November 23, 2022, 05:29:28 PM
Bruce Schaper and I ran a Battlegroup Pacific game at Hangar 18 in Cary, NC Saturday as part of a Triangle Simulation Society game day. The terrain is some that Bob Brown and I made years ago for Advanced Squad Leader (hence the hexes!).

Brief Recap
The Marine first wave came in on either side of Gaomi, a small island home to two Japanese AA guns. The AA guns took their toll, sinking one LCVP and causing suppression in others. A platoon of Marines was left to swim to shore and eventually overwhelm the AA crews.

The remainder of the first wave landed on Gavutu and Tanambogo. The 75mm gun in a cave on Gavutu and other MGs laid down withering fire, making it hard for the Marines to get off the beach. The MGs on the LC finally got some suppression and allowed for the Marines to get a toe hold near the sight of the sea plane docks (not yet present in model form!).

On Tanambogo Pat's Marines had similar luck, taking a couple of turns to eliminate the initial MG nest.

On the final turn of the game the Marines eliminated a couple more Japanese units. However, the final chit draw for the Japanese led to a banzai charge, thus bettering their overall battle rating. A Japanese squad was lost in the charge, but the final outcome was a narrow (18 to 17 battle rating) Japanese victory.

Thank you to all the players and again a big thank you to Bruce for running the game.

Thanks to Bryan for an awesome venue!

That must have been really fun.

That sounds tense - exactly why I like Battlegroup. The table is lovely, I like the little mountain and the murderous looking causeway. I have the Pacific book and a few things stockpiled as it’s next on my wish list of theatres to do (have to finish one of my other two first! and find an opponent) and is such a different animal to Europe, Africa or the East.

Thank you for posting,
Andrew,
Balm

Thanks a lot! Yes I love the PTO. It is my favorite theater for ASL as well!
