I have to admit being a bit obsessed…
https://thegrumpygnome.home.blog/2022/11/25/and-my-mysterious-new-project-is-quitegrimsical-it-is-the-quar/
So I thought it might be nice to document my 28mm Quar project here as well as encourage other Quar lovers to post.
And since I am no longer going to be active on the Wargames Atlantic Forum I decided to replicate the Quar resources list I did. over there.
Here are a number of useful links for information on the Quar. If anyone has links they recommend please let me know so I can add them.

Superb!! I will be following your blog with great interest. I love Quar, such a brilliant back story and some great miniatures, I have a project on the go and will be adding more. Love to see how others do. :)
-
It has been a real pleasure seeing how other Quar projects have developed. I compiled a list of things I found useful online, including a few Quar galleries.
https://wargamesatlantic.com/community/xenforum/topic/81872/a-list-of-various-quar-resource-information-links
-
I have absolutely no intention of getting into any other projects at this time so will live my Quar adventures vicariously through you.
Can't wait.
-
I think I am driving Mrs. GG a bit mad with my anxiously impatient waiting.
One of my online mates is sending me some older 28mm Quar tractors. Another of my online mates was going to send me a platoon of Quar from an unfinished project but can not now find them in his workshop.
And given the time of year the Christmas gift orders folks have made for me directly from Zombiesmith on Black Friday are going to take quite some time to be delivered.
I have tried several online places to track down second hand Quar to buy or trade without success. This has been made a bit more difficult by me not being on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook or Discord.
As for adding new projects I totally understand. I am going to cease a couple of other projects to do this one. My Twilight '49 Weird War 2 Post-apoc project, my Tarnished Splendor Napoleonic Project, my Zulu War project, my AWI project, perhaps even my French Indochina project.
-
A few years ago I raided Noble Knight games and ordered about three different times from them, good price and quick delivery but they haven't had any in for a long time now, I check periodically. No use to you I know but always worth keeping an eye open. They come up so very rarely, people buy them and keep them and who can blame them!! I got a whole load of Crusaders from ebay from France but that seems to have been a one off. Keep on checking your usual sites and who knows, other than that it roll on Christmas and hopefully you will have loads of Quar!! :)
-
Cheers Jambo1, hope dies Last as Mrs. GG and I like to say.
-
Looking forward to seeing your work. I added some terrain for my Quar and got them based up today.

Loving it Rabbitiz! Inspirational, exactly the kind of motivational photos I was hoping for.
-
More lovely eye candy!! Great figures and cracking terrain, well done sir!!! :)
-
I too have joined the ranks. I placed an order for 15mm Quar.
Looking forward to getting them.

I too have joined the ranks. I placed an order for 15mm Quar.
Looking forward to getting them.
I was going to go down the 15mm route but plumped for 28mm, be interested to see your work on the 15mm Quar when they arrive.
-
The 15mm is pretty tempting but all my terrain is 28mm and the plastic 28mm Quar being right around the corner convinced me to go 28mm. Still keen to see what folks do with the 15mm Quar. Joshua's world building is as cool as his designs for the Quar themselves.
-
I would have done 28mm but I hate gluing figures together.
-
With the metals, for the most part it’s just a case of gluing the head into the pre drilled hole. Some even have the heads already attached.
-
The mention of Plastic Quar got me back to these lovely little critters, but being contrary I ordered two 15mm starter armies (will double use for GDF as we play in 15mm).
But I'm sure plastic Quar will follow.
Just waiting on the postal service to do its thing (and the customs charge).
-
I have had some Quar tractors from a mate in the UK stuck in customs for a week. Frustrating.
-
The first of my Quar have arrived… 2023, The Year of the Quar!

You really are becoming obsessed with these little fellas' aren't you?
Must admit I'm becoming obsessed with your blog - please get on with some painting before I burst.

Must admit I'm becoming obsessed with your blog - please get on with some painting before I burst.
It may be some time before I get any of these fellas painted. There are a few things on my workbench to finish in front of them and a bunch of things to get ready to get rid of to help fund this new obsession as well as additional demands on my free time due to the holidays.
But it pleases me to hear you care enough to help motivate me to hurry up! 👍

A couple more batches of Quar have arrived…
https://thegrumpygnome.home.blog/2023/01/06/2023-the-year-of-the-quar-continued/
… and some discussion for the interested.
I would love to hear in this thread from others doing various Quar projects. Not everyone is on Facebook or Discord.

Josh and Zombiesmith are fantastic. I love the Quar and many of his other minis. Very creative and well executed.
-
As I will no longer be active on the Wargames Atlantic Forum I decide to replicate the Quar resource links I did over there at the top of this thread.
This was inspired by stumbling across the Quar related posts done by Laughing Ferret quite awhile back. It seemed a shame that this was so difficult to have find as it was buried in the past and despite many previous searches here and on google I had not come across it before.

Oh… and an aside, this inspired a new blog post from me…..

-
Glad to see you and the Quar back on duty.
-
Great Project!
Looking forward to seeing where it goes.
-
This is not just a thread for my Quar.. I would love to see folks post their Quar projects on here as well. And if anyone wants, I can add a link to their Quar project on the top post.
-
While the Wargames Atlantic release schedule has them in tooling, they just released this teaser image……
-
Nice!! Looking forward to them being released, good little teaser there! :)
-
Joshua Qualtieri has posted up a couple of photos of painted prototypes of the new plastic Quar.
And yes… I am as giddy as a kid on Christmas Eve when it comes to the Quar.
-
Just spotted this over on Dakka Dakka…
….. so excited!
-
Really looking forward to these little crackers finally coming out for release, :)

Really looking forward to these little crackers finally coming out for release, :)
I struggle to find the words to express how happy I am about these. Not only for the conversion potential but the international access through Wargames Atlantic. Hopefully they will be successful with the additional exposure and can help inject funds into Zombiesmith to see the 28m Quar line grow in scope. Sailors, aviators, civilians….
It is the Quar and Anyaral: World of Twilight that prompted a complete change up of my projects and the subsequent clearout thread I am having.
I have a big order of metal 28mm Quar on the way from the States and Josh @ Zombiesmith says he will be releasing a bunch of new 28mm metal Quar sculpts as well as 28mm resin Tractors (Quar tanks) when the plastics are released…. hopefully before autumn.
And the Quar lore is just so good!

8) So very cute
-
A couple more preview photos from Zombiesmith and Wargames Atlantic that have come to my attention.
The first is of a new plastic model next to an older metal one. The plastics are a bit chunkier but should lend some more diversity to the Quar.
-
And my latest blog post…. this time focusing on my very slowly progressing Quar project t with its Anyaral and Imperial Skies offshoots…

Sorry to jump on the thread, but I'm trying to work out the weapons carried by. Fidwog squad (attempting to sort my 15mm Fidwog). I know they have smg/rifle, light/support mg and shotgun, just not the mix (crusader have a 3/7 split between heavy/standard rifle, with separate Heavy Weapon), for each squad (unable to find a download on spats, and the information I have does not cover infantry company (26 Quar - 6 command, 2x10 squad?)
-
Looking at page 69 of Spats…
Infantry Company
HQ - 6 Sketychs
Infantry Section
HQ - 2 Sketych
Each squad
9 Sketych
1 Bensalem F6
Infantry company would be 6 command in the Company HQ and then 44 troops in the Sections (4 squads and 2 section HQ's)
-
Thank you - just what I was after
Was trying to work out what weapons/squads were included in the 15mm starter. Looks like I have a Company HQ Section HQ with 1 squad, Cavalry Troop and Trench Squad (plus some extras).
Currently basing up and then will paint.
-
Glad to help.
I hope that one day we see 28mm versions of everything now available for 15mm.
-
Just had a nice catch up on your blog with my morning coffee.
I'm really looking forward to seeing your forces develop.

Cheers mate! I have had to devote a lot of my free time to clearing out cancelled project items. I like to get things to a certain state before getting rid of them. And it can be frustrating to keep postponing certain things, especially as my free time has been limited lately, but I am in it for the long haul. And I am always glad to hear when someone has enjoyed reading my blog.
I know I can be a bit of an over the top, extreme person. Passionate is a nice way to put it. And I am very passionate about the Quar. Them and their world are just such an excellent mix of so many things I like. I hope to one day get to the level of some of the other amazing Quar fans… like Laughing Ferret.
-
Another blog with some great Quar to help inspire folks.

I love the Quar.
Josh Q (the inventor) has done such a brilliant job creating the characters, the art, the game, the environment, the backstories, and so on.
I love that these little guys are so whimsical as opposed to being hypermasculine like, say, Space Marines.
I would so enjoy a comic book series about these guys, as well.

I could not agree more. This is why I am so passionate about promoting them… I want to see Josh get the resources that would allow him to continue expanding the world of the Quar and all the possible supporting material.
He has an excellent series of letters between a Quar on the front and his nephew back home. It would make a great graphic novel or animated show.

That's a fair pile of plastic!
Nice to see solid progress on this great looking range. Sad I sold my pile but they had gathered dust for too long o_o
-
New packaging looks good…

With no LFGS in easy reach I am stuck using post.
This type of packing is great for retail display but a nightmare for postal services as the figures bounce around while being delivered :-(
Bring back foam backing in blister packs...

A fair point mate.
Latest news from WGA is that the plastic Quar from them are due in Early 2024. According to Joshua Qualtieri the new metal sculpts from Zombiesmith and the resin Quar from Strange Plastic are due to be released at the same time.
Dark Ages Shields - this week!
Grognard Cavalry - VERY soon!
WW1 Russians - very soon after that!
Skeleton Cavalry and Chariots - early 2024
Quar Game - early 2024
Afghan Cavalry - early 2024
In Tooling:
The Damned Infantry
BEF/Home Guard
Some BIG and LITTLE surprises in store for early '24!
-
WGA has said to expect the release date to be announced after the holidays…
-
That looks great!
-
Not a bad price for a starter set.
-
NO QUARter! This looks great.
-
There is a lot of nice stuff, but the problem with that all is , we need a “Stockist in the Eurozone (not UK!!)!”.

I tend to use Miniaturicum for my WGA needs….
https://www.miniaturicum.de/Wargames-Atlantic_1
… but of course that does not help us with the Zombiesmith Quar stuff. So I hear you mate, I really do. JQ is a decent bloke but it is a hassle ordering from the States.
-
Anyone know what the price will be? The ad says free shipping if you spend over £35.
Also, has anyone played the game? Would love to see a video.

The game included in the WGA box set is, from what I understand, the “quick start” version of the Rhyflers Pocket Book 2.0. JQ has said a more extensive version is coming. How much it differs from 1.0 I do not know but here is a video of 1.0 gameplay…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fONV9oF9zEo
I have no idea on the price. Perhaps someone else on here does?

Thanks Grumpy, I'll check that video out.

Cool.
Definitely will look out for that.

The Strange Plastic site is a bit dead.
Our website is currently under conjuration by our web wizard – new releases and content coming soon in the new year.
-
The Strange Plastic site is a bit dead.
A disappointing obstacle on the path to success. I really want the Quar to be a smashing success.
-
Some more interesting photos from JQ…
-
Nice use of the box for some card terrain and I notice the folds for the terrain lie on the folds for the box.

I noticed that, a bit retro.
The sprues look good.
Any news on the prices.

When pressed on the matter by another person asking if the price was between 50 and 100 US Dollars he said, to paraphrase, “yes, somewhere between those two figures”. I am hoping it ends up being a bit less than that but we will have to wait and see what WGA says.

According to the ad in this months WI, if youve not seen it there or elsewhere, the set will retail at £35/$50

Is it £35? It makes it sound like you get free shipping if you spend £35 or more.
Would be a good price though.

JQ and Wargames Atlantic have not confirmed the price as far as I know. JQ said something awhile back about it being between somewhere 50 and 100 US Dollars but we are still waiting to get a public announcement official price from WGA n price as well as release date.

Pre-order is up - https://wargamesatlantic.com/products/this-quars-war-clash-of-rhyfles
$79.95, £65.00
Release date Feb 23
Tempting, very tempting, but actually quite expensive if you're just after the figures
This is a two-player game that features 24 hard plastic Quar (12 Crusaders and 12 Coftyrans), 24 hard plastic dual-use bases, 10 activation cards, 6 D6 dice, and a 48 page rulebook. There is also a selection of cut-out terrain on the box sides to help bring your battlefield to life!

I agree it is both tempting and expensive.
If their release coincides with the Oathmark Human Light Infantry, my bank account is doomed...
-
That was my thought too. I've exhausted my gaming budget and time commitments for now but I may be tempted to pick up some sprues at some point if they become available separately.
-
I certainly hope WGA decides to sell boxes of just the sprues in the future but I will be getting on of the starter sets.
-
I will be purchasing the starter set, looking forward to it's release. :)
-
It's a fair price for the content, problem is not everyone seems to want all the content.
But I guess we'll see sprues separately before long. Hope so!
-
The (pre-) release of the plastic starter set has sent me back through this thread.
Is there a supplier in the UK for the non WGA figures?
I revisited the Strange Plastics site and it still falls apart in a flurry of errors.

I am hoping Sarissa Precision, who I understand deals with WGA product delivery for the UK and EU, will start to carry Zombiesmith/Starnge Plastic Quar very soon. But nothing official has been specifically stated yet.

Joshua Qualtieri told me he believes Sarissa Precision will be carrying the thermoplastic Quar blister packs but he did not say exactly when they would be available.
For now you can get them from Zombiesmith (Grimisical Games) website rather than the Strange Plastic website.

Thanks for sharing this I'll check it out.
I see at least one seller is flogging the individual sprues on eBay.
-
I’ve been intrigued by the Quar for a long time and now when we get some of them in plastic, I think I have to get myself some.
-
My WGA Quar starter box arrived the other day. I am very pleased with it all. 👍
I just need more free time!
-
I have added the starter set to my Mortal Enemies pre-order.

As people have received their box sets, where are all the Quar?
Mine should arrive tomorrow.
-
My box is due this coming week, I do have some metal ones on the painting table, still to finish them though! :)
-
The box is waiting to be opened.
I wonder if there is any corned moth in there?
-
No Corned Moth.

Needs more corned moth….
As much as I love my Quar, I love them I do, I just have not had time to do any miniature painting lately. Too much to do, too little time.
It will be fun watching others paint up theirs though until I get free time to paint.

Damn I missed that :o :)
-
Okay, I have a question about part 8 on the Coftyran sprue.
Is that two baguettes in the bag or large caterpillars?
-
Damn I missed that :o :)
Well I have taken a small plunge and ordered the 6 ‘new’ metal Crusaders from the USA

A good point.
I have started a Clash of Rhyfles rules thread here:

Well, in the email newsletter sent on 5th April Wargames Atlantic said:
Quar Coftyrans - pre-order next week
Quar Crusaders - pre-order next week
Quar Blisters - pre-order next week
So hopeful for Salute, and for those who cannot make it there as well.
-
Joshua Qualteri should be at Salute based out of the Sarissa stand. I suspect there may be some blisters of the new thermoplastic Quar with him.
-
On Tabletop Quar‘s War Gameplay video, which may answer some questions about the rules in the Rhyflers Pocketbook….

The "Quar Discussion" FB group just posted pictures of the two "faction" box sets, with the note - pre orders next week, from Joshua and WA.
Joshua has also said that they should have the "thermoplastic" boosters/blisters too.
-
The box sets are on the site.

Along with the thermoplastic sets
-
Well, Sarissa had the three sets for the Crusaders and three for the Coftyran, plus Dice for both.
Coftyran have officers, RCO and trench Raiders.
Crusaders have officers, torpedoes (pitot mortars) and H11a LMGs.
[Sunday] Just checked The Rhyfler's Pocketbook (version 1.0) and that does not include rules for the RCO or the Torpedo (Splagen).
The RCO is tiny for a 100mm howitzer, I assume you can make the rest of the crew (6) up with the plastics plus ammunition crates.
-
My first, small Crusader order has arrived from the USA: the Limited Edition single figure, the pair of officers and the three LMG gunners. Lovely little figures that I suspect will head towards the top of the painting queue. 8)

Have you any recommendations on removing the flash and mould lines?
They seem to be of a similar material as the Mantic PVC figures, which are difficult to clean up.
-
That’s a tad disconcerting to hear
I haven’t tried yet but I’ll probably take a scalpel to them tomorrow
-

The box sets claim to be hard plastic, and all the WA sets I have are. I really hope they're not like the Mantic ones, as those are a nightmare to clean :'(
Are the "thermoplastic" sets different from the main boxes? I don't see them on the WA site.
-
At a guess, I expect the thermoplastic figures will be in that Siocast stuff a lot of companies are using.
I would love to be proven wrong, though. I’m not a fan of most of the new plastics that companies are using for figures.
-
The Wargames Atlantic figures are hard plastic and are fine (I had some work on some of the joins on the body but nothing filing and liquid poly would not fix).
The thermoplastic ones are the officers, LMG, trench Raiders and the RCO howitzer.

A Swann Morten no 15 blade seems to do a quick and easy job of slicing off the flash, though I’ll have a better idea when I finish cleaning the figure tomorrow.
-
Quick shout out to Troll Hoard Games in the U.S.A. Ordered 8 packs of metal Coftyran, only $15 carriage and delivered to the U.K. in less than two weeks, super service and really well recommended. :)
-
I’ve cleaned up and primed the first three of my thermoplastics.
One had a significant piece of flash with others having mould lines, mostly very faint. They cleaned up easily with the scalpel blade (a bit too easily as I ended up carving away some details by mistake).
An area to take extra care with is the mould lines between the legs, as it can be difficult to get in there and clean up without leaving feathering. I also had to redefine a few fingers that after cleaning up had lost some of their definition.
One of the figures is an LMG, and the longer barrel was warped, which I cut and pinned to straighten out.
They look very nice primed - lovely little characters and I’m looking forward to painting them.
With painting in mind, does anyone know what Maerch is holding in his left hand:

Dubdeu Derringer
The Dubdeu is an 8 gauge, double-barrel, break-open derringer..
From Western Iron.
Hopefully we will get rules for it, the Splagen and the RCO.
-
Thanks - I think I’ll turn it into a large grenade or charge :)
-
Of course it might turn out to be corned moth.
-
:D As it happens I’ve found a YouTube video where Josh says it’s a large grenade.
-

Ah, I have only 10a blades for my Swann Mortens.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGK6jzjF1hyJg6TpgQGH5ygtSkjfeJMzY5HGtbYW4Z0WYDiLqKDYwwxLwi0E_6SIJ7omIQMI_kmgdAo1Xa0MUlcgpB4yrPbQC1xyNgVUxyoMH3BQAeOeIWmJCXnNu_ZPdGjb_Z22uAlFdi/s1600/scalpels1.png)
And I was unaware that the material reacted badly to filing.
The Crusader officer has been cleaned up with the scalpel only. The legs are difficult to clean up.
I hope to get them based and painted this weekend
I have one finished Crusader Rhyfler ready to be photographed.
-
I didn’t try filing but I’d guess it feathers

With a vengeance.

That does make more sense, after posting I noticed the rifle barrel.

It’s two baguettes
-
If I understand well, those thermoplastic miniatures are a nightmare to clean, so I don’t understand why they don’t make them in miniatures plastic? It’s like the box of Star Wars Legion I bought in the past and discovered that the plastic was not like hard miniature plastic and difficult to clean, so i abandoned!
-
If I understand well, those thermoplastic miniatures are a nightmare to clean, so I don’t understand why they don’t make them in miniatures plastic?
It is a question of cost.
The mould for a sprue (or in the case of the Coftyran and Crusader figures two half sprues) is extremely expensive to have made, and you need to be sure you are selling plenty of them to make a return.
The moulds for the thermoplastic figures are much cheaper to make, but do not last as long.
-
If I understand well, those thermoplastic miniatures are a nightmare to clean
I didn’t find that. I found them a lot easier to clean up than many metals. I just wouldn’t file them.
