Title: Modern wars in 1/35- project log
Post by: Freddy on December 04, 2022, 04:44:52 PM
So I have a topic for my ww1 1/35 project
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=139011.0
also for the ww2 one
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=138659.0
now its time for the post-ww2 times. The concept is the same, 1/35 figures on 30mm bases for individual skirmishes and they can be put onto movement trays for base-based (does this expression exist?) games. I also have a lot of vehicles, and use 1/72 planes as the air force. This collection is more widespread/less focused as the other two, so lets go in alphabetical order.

Afghanistan+Arabs
My collection of irregular warriors, I mostly use them as Afghans, but there were a lot of foreign legionaries in the Afghan wars on the Afghan side. The collection of Arab guerillas is for now without a concept (Arabic imagination?), as the Afghans are more-or-less focused onto the Soviet-Afghan War, the Arabs go from 1970s Palestina to the 2020s. Most of them are factory models of various manufacturers, a few of them my sculpts or kitbashes.

My first batch of Afghan warriors:

They are from the same ICM kit, but with some new weapons:

My favourite set of Afghans (Verlinden, easy to assemble, easy to paint)

This one (Trumpeter) I did not like, weird poses:

They also have some tanks (two Syrian and one Afghan)

Also some of their own civilians (+a prisoner)

Africans
If the Arabs are a little generic/imagination-esque, it is 1000 times true for these African guys. I tried to paint them to various colours, to be generic guerillas anywhere below the Sahara. They were made by the company Trumpeter, the guy with the arm braces is my sculpt.
I also sculpted them this shaman guy, a characteristic leader, maybe he pushes things a little bit into the pulp direction, be it modern or colonial Africa.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi7-jRCU0j4roQBhp6Pm1kxiAj0heQR9KhBUqRHrp48hkCALe2uvx7OSZ4kKCVwN9-U9OKuJfO4X6aGSjIxy_Vv8rkgbPpSoKl8lQXMdcS-aQ2TmE7b7DoH5s9chTfOkVE625ygOUccJLn3H926osNo1UKkt1rsSfY0DH4DrwovI1nfiiPlCqfILNrN=w468-h468)
Also this general, not painted yet, your classical “African general in Hollywood movies” style. Sorry, white FIMO is hard to photo.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQM_txQWBKW49xqUy_oXd1GyN9NMwaKVIs9tdWGmN44cgCgmmtbD4aoLyymxWtaqpvmMS8MelsxOjBW12pYdP9jia7cdqfosXG-J0hIv7WUJAMtGwBuxfp8CzTKwhQ-0kC-p7i7FkUsph7DDpu3H4uauUuzjM4lU5Oe-UGkZmY_iFL5OHxi9EXApvy/w388-h517/Afrikai_tabornok_1.JPG)

Civilians:
These first two pics we had in an other topic, just here for the sake of completeness:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-ABNdooodi0SjuyGd7WlNID23DKLoCiNcns2YY6KyWvt3x3aAoyrnfRmHdDll4MhNgECGvlpZYmPIxsKxxKzw7l40Kwf9Up8gm-Ww8jz2Kw6ZoFA8-zBWTx7K1OCeDqzwlnchao_Oe74OLIx602OLABjKIaXVchHKgeAE0J_5qDh7hFr0zhVk10lE/w811-h352/Civilek_%C3%B6sszes.jpg)

Also some hunters. Those guerillas really want to buy this cool Toyota Hilux:

I sculpted this generic civilian, one of the hunters was also mady by using one resin copy. The original one has a remote controller, and I used a Revell mini plane for his model plane.
A street thug, a ballas gang member from GTA. I count him as a civilian, maybe a tough guy, but we are playing with tanks here.
Hungarians
My focus here is the 1965M uniform set, with small modifications it served to the late 1990s, so covering a long period. These figures are my sculpts and kitbashes, seemingly no one else does Hungarian Peoples Army figures in 1/35.

In the lighter green there are some wearing the early 50s uniform, this one came in the greenish colour of the ww2 Hungarian uniform, but otherwise it was the same as the late ww2 soviet uniform- I can literally just repaint ww2 russians, ok, I shall place the rank markings onto the neck piece. In cold war gone hot scenarios they will be mobilized reservists.
Some more in desert uniform: Hungarian soldiers in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars wore these.

Hungarians are the faction profiting the ost of my 1/35 vehicle collection, I do not want to post them all, maybe just this T-55, this is my favourite modern vehicle model. +my uncle served on a Hungarian peoples Army T-55 as a tanker in the 70s.

Israelis
A small batch of figures, there is some more unpainted. Plastics.

Mercenaries.
Here I am going more for the modern pulp and action movie stuff, on the table they are the most versatile faction. they can be, well, mercs, but also bandits, sicarios, or part of the US forces, but usually they simply just flesh out underpowered factions, on my tables they fought a lot against the Russians as Chechens or Afghans.

...part2, since it apparently was too long for the forum motor.
I like this faction because I can go a bit crazy with the colour schemes. A GSG-9 operator gone rough:
Also I can include here some action movie stuff like this minigun. in the game it is a crew weapon, so needs another guy to shoot long bursts, no one is able to operate such a weapon alone. But it looks cool this way.
They also have some girls too.

This one would look weird in an other faction, but the Merc army is just the place for booty babes posing with serious weapons:
I also conscripted this guy ar a merc leader:
And do not forget this one. If Bennet needs to let off some steam, you also call the Merc army.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgUZryNmO5vfeOBYXN96fQ-n3UfAMC1PqBH8OrLYpLxgcTIgdnzQ9Si9khLfzw2YoHgVtq2pzKeNWIUwTEsGqrrAswZyJfoTZLAc_atiO-ITkRxkEVj4s2bVj25tdDquOB9rwzkbvgnX8R6XHMIqMGBapZpIORtaheCdtXCzZl4N1BgTnoPWV-M-wB8=w563-h563)

Soviets/Russians
A big batch of older models, mostly plastics from various manufacturers. I will need to make some system here, some of them are wearing the chaotic Russian uniforms characteristic for the 90s (Chechen wars), the others represent the 80s, so the Afghan war.

USA
This is maybe the biggest army, the largest part of them is waiting to be finished. They are plastic kits, representing the early 90s uniforms. I painted them for this chocolate chip cookie DBDU desert pattern: it was introduced for the public during Desert Storm, but it is used since the early 80s, so can be Cold War, but, as a desert pattern, it does not look too out-of-place in a post-2001 Iraq or Afghanistan setting+no wargamer is able to follow the newer and newer US uniform camo patterns introduced there almost yearly.

Vietnam
4 Vietcongs, I liked to make the bases with all the jungle foliage. Not sure how I will incorporate them into my games since I do not plan Vietnam war for a while. Maybe going with cold war gone hot into the Red Alert direction and playing battles on various climates.

2 things....

1.  I've long gotten out of 1/35 stuff.  I had a pretty extensive collection of then-modern armored vehicles in 1/35 in the late 80s and early 90s.  i even had a rendition of my M1IP tank in Germany.  I ended up donating my built models to my Ohio Army National Guard unit (a tank battalion, in which I was their S3 at one time) for display purposes in the lobby of their armory, and I sold the unbuilt kits to a hobby shop here in Michigan.

2.  But being out of the 1/35 loop, I had no idea of what was available.  Your collection is quite impressive, both in scope and look!

Okay, 3 things...

3.  Of all your stuff, I particularly like that shaman.  It might be a bit pulpy, but you can certainly use him for some historical-based scenarios, for sure...

In any event, well done!

I really like your collection mate, lots of different scenarios. What rules are you using with them, I do 40mm gaming and don't make any changes to any rule sets for them.

While technically each piece of my 1/35 display model collection can be fielded in the game (and I also made stands for my 1/72 planes), the game pieces shown above are my old, forgotten models with a little updated paintjob- 5-10 years ago I thought I will never need them, but now they are very useful.

This scale was nowhere near this tempting in the early 90s. Back then you could maybe build a ww2 German army (even that with large white areas for example in the artillery topic), all the other themes you were lucky to have 1-2 boxes and usually no infantry at all. Then, in the late 90s a bunch of Ukrainian and Russian companies came and they started fleshing out the Soviet theme, both in ww2 and in modern, and they made great money on people being bored of Normandy 1944 and Battle of the Bulge King Tigers. Then the internet came and everybody started to look for niche topics since with the world being the market, a lot of stuff suddenly became investment worthy if done well. And now we see the dawn of 3D printing, when investment need is even lower for a model manufacturer.

Thanks! The idea came from a book of Kálmán Kittenberger (a great hunter, who wrote books about his African safaris in the 1900s-1920s), he wrote about a village where the people were terrorized by a demon hyena, later discovered that it is the local medicine man who is killing the villagers with a jaw-like iron tool.
I gave him a Mauser rifle, this way he fits from pre-ww1 times until novadays. Sculpting era-agnostic figures like this usually comes with lots of scrifice on the "characterful" side, but in modern African militias anything goes, there is no brake on the weird train:

Thank you! Basically I have my own ruleset, a simple d10 based system, but sadly it is not available in English. Maybe someone can read the original:
https://makettekeswg.blogspot.com/2021/02/98-wargame-szabalyok.html

As mentioned above, there are two particular rulesets I really like, both from Tom Jensen/Ostfront:
-Hind&Seek is about the Soviet-Afghan war, and it has a really good mechanics for hit&run ambushes, after 1-2 games you really understand the problems the Soviets faced there. It is a squad/base based game though.
-Cornered Wolf is about the Chechen war, a couple dozen figures per side (+a few Russian vehicles), simple mechanics about a very deadly and chaotic urban combat situation, also a great introduction for beginners.

I also wanna try Black Ops from Osprey.

Another very impressive set of figures - I really like them, and your conversions work really well!

But as I’ve said before, you need to get some better terrain to set off the figures better!

Nice work!. Sculpt and cast some of those Hungarians in 28mm and you'll have yourself a customer. Sculpt some Hungarians and Soviets for the '56 uprising and we can triple the order.

Yep, Concrete Box City, the capitol of Aquariumfoliageland saw a lot of action from the early 20th century up to the 41th millennium, my terrain collection needs some more theme specific pieces. And/or a club with proper terrain.

Never say never, but sadly I can not promise this happening soon. The closest I ever got to do modern era in 28mm was when I made some Hungarian Peoples Army themed conversion bitz for my 40k Imperial Guard:

To make conversions easier, I made some of the support weapons own versions to cast. While the supply of  AKs and M-16s are neverending, some weapons are rare to find in my bitz box.
RPG-7 with the ammo backpack. More, than 40 little pieces of plastic :P

Found some closer pics of the Russian Alfa team. I had to sculpt new heads for these, the original ones were really bad.

And a new one, Soviet decontamination team. Basically Chernobyl liquidators, he company ICM has a whole range of Chernobyl themed sets (injection plastic), they are from one of those kits.

Thank you! I am still thinking about how to incorporete the decontamination team into the game- maybe as an objective marker? Or, in bigger games, since it needs a little abstraction, a unit to be able to cleanse poison gas?

Pretty good job on that "chocolate chip" pattern on those US fellas...

Thanks! It is mostly done with Tamiya colours, I found their paint scheme the best:
-XF-59 Desert Yellow base
-XF-52 Flat Earth for the basic patches
-XF-64 Red Brown patch under each basic patch
-XF-57 Buff patch over each basic patch
-next to each patch groups of 3 white dots
-next to each white dot a black half circle
-wait for complete drying
-dark brown artist oil into the deep/undercut areas
-a very little white artist oil for the "high" areas

Soviets from the Soviet-Afghan war. The one with the SVD is from Zvezda, the one on the right from Dragon, the rest from ICM.

Wow. All I can say is WoW.

At Hot Lead (Stratford, Ontario) last year a guy was running a 1/35 (54mm) game. WWII IIRC in a small town. Took up a lot of space but what I saw looked great. I didn't look too closely as I do not need another distraction.

As for your shaman guy he would work perfectly if you use Hell and Uncivil Disorder rules. Cornered Wolf is a good set as well.

Always nice to hear about like minded 1/35 gamers, sadly Ontario is a bit far from here :( Also thank you for the suggestion of that ruleset, I will surely check it out, as you can see, a huge part of my collection is fit for that kind of game.

Any door and any head :) I really find the idea of "tactical tomahawk" weird. People always try to explain instead of admitting that they only want it for the sake of coolness. In this case I found it fitting the character :)

I have played a couple games of H&UD and still trying to both "get my head around it", as like many home produced it seems to be missing parts and more of a collection of good ideas, and "need to bring it to the table more after doing something to it" as in fixing or patching the seemingly missing bits to make a consistent set of rules. I usually do not really care about these, since I use most of these systems as a collection of ideas (to buff my own ruleset) rather than a complete ruleset anyways.

With all those desert camo Americans and Afghan war Soviets around, the Arab-Afghan faction also needs some reinforcements. So, meet Abdul.

Abdul is sculpted in FIMO, cast in resin, and with his generic AK-chicom pouch gear, with simple head swaps he could easily be Pablo or Kwame too. Maybe even Vladimir or Nguyen.

Thanks! I was thinking about putting it onto a diorama base, but I generally do not like big bases (60mm heavy weapon team bases in 40k for example), hard to move around on the terrain.

I can not make separate bases for the figure and the weapons, because that way I can not put them close together enough. I also can not fix to a weapon for a large base and leave a hole only for the figure because that way I would have a rocket launcher model with the storage need of a tank model. Decisions, decisions:) I will just keep them separated, maybe I will just make separate small diorama bases for the accessories like ammo boxes for the feeling.

A 1/72 helicopter, a Hind for the Afghan war Soviet Army. (No mistake here, this is a Mi-24A, the first version with box shape nose, 3 men crew and a weaker machine gun. The Gatling gun and the characteristic double bubble canopy was a later improvement) The model was built originally by someone else, but it needed a lot of renovation/repaint and I also added the flight stand.

It does indeed, I have a lots GDR-made stuff, for example a Simson motorbike which was thrown after you in junk iron price 10-20 years ago, now notalgic Germans would give its weight in gold for it.
GDR plastic model industry made some 1/72 Warsaw pact flyers too, but my favourite line is their 1/100 Soviet airliner range. Most of those planes have no other sets released in that scale ever since! Here is my Il-62.

Niko the manufacturer of that Su-7? I wonder why they made the Su-7? As far as I know the DDR's LSK never flew them, only Su-22s in the 1980s. Must research what other kits they produced.

This one:

Here is the list of their kits. Seems like they did a lot of non-GDR stuff too.

(The Il-62 above also came with Interflug, the GDR airline company markings, the Hungarian decals are from HADmodels)

Cheers! Seems someone bought the moulds as the Su-7, Be-6 and the Yak-24 are all being sold on Etsy under the manufacturing name of Niko and according to one of the links in that Wiki article there is or was a German successor company that holds/held the tooling to much of the range.

I'd quite fancy the AN-12 and/ or the AN-24. Must have a look about. They seem to be fairly simple, indeed primitive kits.

Apologies - very late to the thread but…. Amazing work! From the sculpting (with what is not the easiest material - at least in my experience) to the lovely paint jobs and then you seem to actually get them to the table. I’m not sure ‘envy’ quite covers my feelings  :D

They could have more table time, but yes, i try to use them :)
Working with FIMO is not that hard, I really like that you can just put down a figure and pick up the next day where you left it as it is oven-hardening.

Thank you! I wanted to try to paint woodland scheme, and an African figure was an ideal candidate as there are loads of knockoff/copy patterns used so if the painting experiment turns bad, it is still useable. I am pleased with the colours, I can work a little bit on the pattern as the black lines turn to be longer and more irregular. The colours:
-Tamiya Field Grey (for a more "unused" version maybe try NATO Green)
-Tamiya Dark Yellow (for a more used version try something less yellow)
-Tamiya Nato Brown
-black is black. For a more used version try GW Corvus Black or Tamiya Panzer Grey

Working with FIMO is not that hard, I really like that you can just put down a figure and pick up the next day where you left it as it is oven-hardening.

I do find when using two part sculpting putty when you are waiting for a set time to add detail etc (when the putty is in the wanted condition and has started to cure) everything else in my life starts to contend for my immediate attention and I sometimes miss the window.

That is a definite advantage. The main thing I remembered about using Fimo was the fact you had to have clean hands (I was little) but mainly that it didn’t hold hard edges well (but again I was little).

I made my first miniatures out of Fimo after watching my brother and his friends play Rogue Trader in ‘88. I made a squad of 5 space marines and a genestealer driving a deathroller (from Bloodbowl). I had just turned 7 and was sold but couldn’t afford miniatures so I made my own. I still have them somewhere. Now reconsidering it as a medium…. thank you.

Thanks! It is relatively easy:
-black base
-Eshin Grey line on the lower part
-light grey line: thinner and even lower
-a white dot on the upper right part. Can be a small line following the contour of the lens or more dots.
-gloss lacquer

The time management part of oven hardening is not only about the fractured nature of sculpting time for adult men, but also for the deductive sculpting approach: you make the big masses first and if you like the composition, you go down to the details. If you want to sculpt like this with green stuff, you have to be really fast.

I use FIMO with rubber gloves. Note that it also hardens a little bit by the air, after 1-2 weeks it gets harder, be it the opened package or the half finished sculpt. It can still worked with, also can be re-softened with water or heating, but that is not the same as a freshly opened package. At that point use it for a simple sculpt (terrain, sandbags, whatever) and open a new one. Good thing that it is cheap and easy to find.

Two cars for modern themes. They are diecast ones (the Sprinter is 1/36, the Vito 1/32), I added some detail with painting, a driver and number plates. The Vito with the markings V260 is a Chinese model, in Europe it is running as W447, but that little historical inaccuracy might just spice up things :P

The vehicles will also serve as civilian/third party vehicles, this is why I like to make drivers into them. I might even use them in Gaslands.

I basecoated them black, then painted the most of it brown, then added more and more redish brown paint by hitting it with the brush repeatedly. In the end I lightly drybrushed it with a darker shade of metal.

Thank you for your kind comments! I plan to add some baggage and at least 2 additional crew members to it (manning the machine guns), but this is how it came with the kit, I only added the driver. There is a little cheat in this too as the gun truck era in Iraq (the early 2000s) was a little bit after the DBDU uniforms were out of use, they already used DCU and MARPAT uniforms back then.

After the rabbits, I have some pheasants too (my sculpts again).

...and I also made some more hunters.

Both of them my sculpts originally. One from the gangster shown in my Cthulhu thread (pg3):
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=138740.30 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=138740.30)
, the other one a redneck guy I already painted 3 of:

Nice sculpts. Curious for a Hungarian that you seem to have modelled one as a very good likeness of Julius von Haynau. lol

Thank you!
Nah, he was made after the Hungarian rock musician Attila Gidófalvy:

Haynau, maybe still the most hated man in Hungary (and wow, I can tell you, that is one hell of a contest :) ), had a moustache far less dangling, more on the twirled side. I will need a model of him though, for the 28mm 1848 project :)

Thank you! I made that to be a gangster, but also to be a great conversion fodder for figures like this hunter.
