Hi guys, for the past month I have been assembling my Oathmark barbarian army using mostly Frostgrave male snd female plastic models. I have 5 units of 20 man infantry and needed something extra. So I used the Victrix celt chariot set and Gripping Beast horses, converted the drivers and used some leftover plastic barbarians as extra crew.
Next up was a unit of 10 cavalry using the Gripping Beast noble goth cavalry as a base and complementing these with Frostgrave barbarian and knight bits as well as some greenstuff.
Now onto painting!
-
Those look fantastic also given the vibe be great for Hyborian Conan-inspired games.
-
I completely agree, those look excellent! I love the kit bashed figures you’re putting together. The chariots are great.
Just curious why you decided to replace the chariot horses, did the ones from Victrix not fit in well?

I quite agree! 👍
-
They look great. Look forward to their painting.
-
Gosh, they look fantastic! Well done indeed! :)
-
Very creative, the cavalry and chariots are a great addition to a barbarian army.
Are you going to do a mammoth conversion?
Just curious why you decided to replace the chariot horses, did the ones from Victrix not fit in well?
Possibly so the horses look similar.

Thanks guys! really appreciate your comments :D
@Pattus Magnus, the horses that come with the Victrix Celt chariots are very small, which is historically quite accurate, but I wanted something larger for my fantasy barbarians. And in addition, as Ultravanillasmurf said, to have them the same size as the cavalry :-)
-
Wowee. These are utterly amazing kit bashes.
-
General Lee, that makes sense regarding the horses. I have the Victrix kit, but haven’t done a side-by-side comparison with other manufacturers’ nags yet. The details you added, like the shields on the sides, go a long way toward moving it into a fantasy setting. I’m really looking forward to seeing them painted!
-
Thats a great idea, really nicely done
You need a mammoth, schleich do one which is spot on for 28mm figures

Sounds good! But what would I run him as? I see A Song of Ice and Fure also do some great looking mammoths but they are sold out
-
You could always use the Victrix elephants.
-
I got a wonderful mammoth off eBay, for my barbarian army.
Superb resin model.
Cannot remember the company, but just do a search?
-
You could probably run a mammoth as a giant. Both are big, attract arrows and are difficult to control. You could tack on a ranged attack for the mammoth or a giant for archers in a howdah shooting or the big guy throwing rocks, but why bother - their main impact in a battle-level game is shock and awe in close combat. I’m of the opinion that keeping it simple with a re-skin is the way to go when importing a troop type int Oathmark.

Great idea! A giant would be perfect. Thanks!

Ok I started my first unit. Not much to see yet
-
Great start, and the chariots are a nice addition. Looking forward to seeing them painted up.
I second the others saying that you could use a mammoth. It’s pricey but I think the Shieldwolf mammoth is very nice.

I found the mammoth, but it doesn't seem to come with those riders. What range are they from?
-
Wow very cool stuff

It's a pretty model, wrote a review here https://wargameterrain.blogspot.com/2015/09/shieldwolf-miniatures-northern-alliance.html?m=1 still unpainted of course ...
-
There is a mammoth set for the Song of Ice and Fire game, no idea how well they scale up though. (Edit I see these have already been mentioned!)
Reaper did a rather nice 'War Mammoth' in their Reaper Bones 5 kickstarter - you can sometimes find them on ebay for around the 30 quid mark.
-
Yeah I think I'll wait for the A song of ice and fire figures when they're bsck in stock. These would work really well slongside the barbarians.
-
“ I found the mammoth, but it doesn't seem to come with those riders. What range are they from?”
My barbarian horde was mostly Copplestone cave men and women.
Just loved the sculpting.
Sold it now.
-
Hi guys,
Here some progress shots of my first 20 warriors. All have been base coated and given a wash of Agrax Eartshade. I then highlighted the skin and added some red glazes here and there. The clothes and wood were given a very light drybrush of Vallejo Dark Sand and the metals wwre highlighted too.
Now onto basing!
-
Outstanding work. This army is going to be very impressive!
-
Those look great! I like the colours you’re using. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the army come together!
-
Blimey! Those look good.
But I’ll echo others: you need a mammoth. And giants! And rhinos! lol
-
Very cool I will be watching this thread with much interest.
-

Cheers!
Already got a giant and rhino finished. As for the mammoth, I'm hoping the War Mammoths by CMON are rereleased someday.
-
That first barbarian unit looks awesome!
-
Cheers!

When I had a barbarian army, some 30 years ago, Grenadier produced affordable war rhinos and mammoths. Iirc Mirliton in italy and em4 in the uk have the old moulds. Maybe that’s what you’re looking for?
Else: sure, the ASoIaF stuff could be pretty spot on for you!
-
So that is the first unit finished. Must say, I'm quite pleased with the result. 8)
-
You should be very pleased, they look awesome! That banner is great, is it freehand? I have something similar in mind for some of my dwarves and barbarians, so any tips would be helpful.
I’m really looking forward to seeing more units as they’re completed!
-
Brilliant work! You have every reason to be pleased. 👏🏻
-
Fantastic crew there. Really good unit.
-
They look brilliant.
Using a mammoth as a giant is an inspiring idea.
I have four woolly rhinos on the bench at the moment, once I find the details I will pass them on, They are already on the Oathmark cast list.

Thanks guys!!
The flag is by Flags of War. At first I was unsure what to use. I don't like painting banners and the rest of my Oathmark armies have Flags of War flags. So when I saw these wolf flags on their website, I thought they might look good and it works I think, although they might be a bit cartoony. I dirtied the flag up a it to tone it down.

Fantastic bunch indeed.
-
Fantastic work on that unit! I like that the models individually all have some colour on them, but the overall effect is still muted, and I also like the mix of male and female models too (you did well there I think!). I also really like the banner - very fitting. :D
-
Lovely warband but whoever owns that flowerbed they are walking through is going to be furious!
-
Thanks for the information about the flag, there are some on that site I’ll be looking closely at!
-
Many thanks for all the encouraging comments guys! Work has started on the chariots
One would think I have no life lol
-
And here are the chariots! Let me know what you think. In the end, I think I should have picked horses that are actually running, but oh well
-
Man, those chariots rock!
Best models you've done so far, if you ask me.
I love this whole thread, as you might suspect from someone with my name. lol
-
Those turned great! I think the horses look about right, a full gallop might have been the thing right before a charge, but I think most maneuvering would have been at a slower pace. These guys are just lining up for the final approach!
Beautiful kit bashing there!
-
Great work mate! 👍
-
They look great. Were the reins part of the kits or did you add those?
-
Excellent progress all looking awesome. So what is next?
-

yes! it's a very detailed kit. Also a bit fragile
-
Excellent progress all looking awesome. So what is next?
thanks! Well I want to do the remaining 4 infantry units before I do the cavalry. But I have an ACW itch atm so I will probably paint a couple of stands of Confederates to keep my sanity intact lol
-
Figures look great 8)
-
Great looking chariots!
+I just went through the thread, the units look cool too.
-
Pretty cool chariots. I would not mind the horses. One of the passengers, the guy with the hammer, looks ad if he’s using the chariot as a battle taxi anyway and the other is shooting-actually we have very limited information how this was done in antiquity, i.e. did the archers shoot while going full speed or slowing down for an arrow shower.
So great work!
-
Well in that case looking forward to the ACW as well. Keep 'em all coming.
-
Wowee. Those chariots are an inspiration.
-
Great work on the chariots. I still have one of those to do for my own project - the first two were...fiddly, but I was happy with the results. May have to get up the guts to finish the last one!
-
Wow, those chariots are awesome. Looking forward to seeing the whole force together! 8)
-
Hi guys! So after several weeks if doing other stuff, I finally started work on my second unit of 20 warriors. I love painting these figures. They're great!
And thanks again for the positive comments!
-
Excellent progress! That’s great that you are having fun painting them, it helps with staying motivated. I’m looking forward to seeing this set of wildlings completed!
-
Finally finished my 2nd unit! Also did some army shots. Now onto archers.
-
Man, they look so good! Well done!
-
Great work! 👍
-
They look fantastic! Well done on your perseverance too. :)
-
Yeah, what the others said! Great work- they look excellent!
-
Brill 8)
-
They look really great!
-
I love this thread! The Hyborean look definitely comes through, and the unified colors and basing all came out well! The flag is my favorite. Excited to see what's next!
-
Finally finished the barbarian archers. These took me well over a month. It's been pretty hectic with work and writing a rulebook. Hopefully the energy will return soon
-
Excellent work! I love the variety you have among your archers, yet the whole unit looks cohesive. Your barbarian army must be quite impressive when all of your units are on the table!
-
Yes, nice work tying the figures together whilst keeping it diverse.
-
That's a great looking hoard you've got there.
-
Good evening all,
Finally got a chance to work on my barbarian army again. I have a unit of 20 linebreakers and some characters on my desk.
Oh and I also found some excellent mammoths (ASOIAF)
-
Those all look very promising! I’m doing something similar, but with a much smaller scope (so far). I only have about a dozen barbarian linebreakers assembled and primed. I’m looking forward to seeing yours painted! The mammoths are a great addition to the horde, too!
-

Any progress? Looking forward to seeing your barbarians
-
Well that seemed like an eternity but the barbarian linebreakers and characters are done!
Now onto the cavalry.
-
Nice 8)
-
Oh yeah! Those look brilliant! I love how they are all unique, depending on which parts went into each model, but they all fit together as a coherent unit. I expect that individualization is a big part of why they took some time to paint. Totally worth it, in my opinion!
-
Very very nice job. I do have to ask, where did you find the "not Conan" models?
-
Thanks Pattus and Snitcy!
The non-Conan couple are by Elladan Miniatures

-
Oh yeah, those are lovely .. in a horrifying, wouldn't want to meet them on the battlefield, kind of way lol
-
By Crom! They're great.
The blue warpaint running through the warband is a really nice touch.
Also wouldn't want to meet any of this mob down a dark alley.
