As the title suggest - this will be the thread were I post all of my Asia-related stuff - small warbands and individual miniatures for games like Ronin as well as Test of Honour. I've got my first Ashigaru and Samurai at the painting station ATM, I've cleaned and primed some monks and a rag tag bunch of minis which could represent Ikko-Ikki, bandits or even Wokou. I've also ordered a bunch of Koreans from the Perry bro's.
Anyway, let's start with some scenery! A couple of Japanese-style buildings from 4ground - with some additional painting, weathering and scratchmade thatched roof from IKEA towels. Great kits to build all around but their website seems to be down, are they still around?
Anyway, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!
-
Very nice building and great work on the thatched roof.
Looking forward to seeing your project take shape and seeing the first painted miniatures.
Been on doing some terrain for a similar project.
-
Thanks a lot - appreciate it!
It's a pretty easy method but it looks great in the end IMO. All you need is an old IKEA towel, some water, PVA glue and a tooth brush.
-
The thatched roofing is very effective. Great looking house.
-
Ooh, the IKEA make all the difference.
-
Your thatching makes all the difference on the building. Nice work.

With regards to 4Ground, they shut their doors at the end of June. Long story short, their terrain business was a side gig while their main business was producing souvenir swords for gift shops, which collapsed due to Covid killing UK tourism, and that led to a load of internal restructuring that ultimately led to 4Ground and its terrain business being wound up. This was combined with an ultimately unfulfilled Kickstarter where they got halfway through production and then didn't actually ship. How everything got where it did is a little strange and there is a writeup on Reddit about it (which, full disclosure, I wrote): https://www.reddit.com/r/HobbyDrama/comments/vcu34h/tabletop_wargaming_4ground_fades_into_the/

Thanks a lot for the feedback as well as the info on 4ground. Sad to see them go but some pages still have their stuff in stock whis is a silver lining.
Anyway, here's my first finished mini, for my "Red warband" - as you can see I went with Obu Toramasa.
It's one of the superb Perry ones - very detailed so it took a while - glad to be doing small warbands for smaller games ... o_o
Pretty pleased with the result except I'm not really satisfied with the sashimono - might redo it in the future, but for now it'll suffice.
I've got a bunch of Ashigaru - 5 with yari and 5 with arquebus on the workbench as we speak so stay tuned for more red goodness soon. Thanks for looking!
-
He looks great 8)
-
Send in the Red Bull!. :D
-
Haha, thanks guys! Made a new Sashimono - I think this one looks way better!
-
I think I'm going to pick up this code from Perry - would it be authentic to replace the naval carriage with a bigger, more menacing looking one and if so, which one would fit the bill?
Thanks in advance!
-
There’s a larger cannon here; JA03 :)

Oooh now we're talking - great stuff, thanks man! Lots of good stuff there! ;)
-
Would some random European wheeled mid/late 16th century one with wheels work as well?
Btw, really great stuff on your site - expect an order soon. ;)

Thanks :)
Yes, at a pinch I suppose some unscrupulous captain would be willing to sell a few cannon at the right price :D
-
Great work!
-
Thanks a lot - appreciate it!
Here are my first two Perry Ikko-Ikki - super fun to paint! I've converted a bunch more too look more menacing and rag-tag with bits of scavenged armor and headgear for that "pirate" feeling, and they're at the painting station atm so stay tuned for more soon! :D
-
Lovely :)
-
They look great.Love the cuts and bruises on there legs.
-
Thanks, really appreciate it!
Thanks! Did the same with my 16th century Irish kern, I think you'd get bruised now and then running around like that, right? lol
-
Very nice indeed. With bare legs and feet, and mismatched armor and equipment they have an Ikko-Ikki look.
-
Very nice, they look great.
-
Great Wako miniatures :o :-*!! Waiting to see more... ;D
-
Thanks a lot - really appreciate it!
I've finished three more ikko-ikki/wako minis - all Perry sculpts with some simple head swaps. I'm currently working on three more (including a "captain" sporting an eye patch - yahaharr....) and I've also included a couple of detailed shots of the ikko-ikki/wako previously shown:
-
Metternich has used some of the same sculpts to beef-up the Bandit buntai for Ronin.
-
It's time for yet another question - which Clan unit/units, if any, bearing red armor took part in the internal fighting in Japan as well as the invasions of Korea?
EDIT: Found some refrence myself, Mori Clan it is!
-
My understanding is there tended not to be a lot of colour standardisation in Sengoku clan armies. Occasionally some retinues might share tassel colours on lamellar armour pieces, but visual depictions generally suggest no standardisation in underclothes. So you could probably get away with just about any clan that fought in both Japan and Korea and just give them a particular sub-retinue with red tassels.
-
I believe that the most famous "red coats" (the Ii) did not participate. That said, any individual samurai wore what his pocket would bear (but the Mon would be his clan's).
-
Those wako look excellent!
-
Those pirates look like a despicable bunch of ner-do-well's. :-*
-
Quite nice!
-
Thanks guys - working on some more atm! I got sidetracked by the new Cadians from GW but I did manage to finish a bunch of 'red' Ashigaru w/teppo:
-
The Ashigaru are marvelous, but too well armored and uniform for Wakko.
-
Yes, these will be used as regular Ashigaru. However, some of my Wako will be pretty well armored, as some actually were - here's Spanish governor Gonzalo Ronquillos account on the matter:
"The Japanese are the most belligerent people here. They bring artillery and many arquebusiers and pikemen. They wear body armor. All provided from the works of the Portuguese, whom they have shown to them for the detriment of their souls [sic] ..."
-
They look good :)
There were a couple of clans that were basically wako in all but name, Murakami being the biggest I believe.
-
Thanks! Aaaah, very interesting!!
-
Just got these Kato Kiyomasa transfers from Perry and as usual I've got a couple of questions:
1) Disc as well as stripes for Ashigaru sashimono?
2) Only disc for samurai sashimono?
3) I'm thinking about skipping the mon for the hats and armor - would that be authentic?
4) Will these transfers work for Sengoku as well as Imjin?
Thanks in advance!

'Wako' were multi-ethnic pirates who ranged from Japan and Korea down to South-East Asia. They could be Japanese, Korean, Chinese, any other Asian or even European. So their equipment could be a mix of pretty much anything available.
The pirates of Japan are usually called 'kaizoku.' These were very different insofar as in almost all cases they would have a 'daimyō' patron, or operated as de facto daimyō themselves (such as the Murakami). So they were much more connected to prevailing power structures in Japan, and as such operated with a much more limited range than wako. Given that, they would have looked much like other Japanese warriors, though perhaps with some more exotic touches.
A good study of such 'kaizoku' is:

I've finished a lot of minis since my last post so expect a lot of pics the following days! Anyway - hre are some messy shots of my almost-finished modular 16th century gaming table! Everything is modular and removeable. I'm currently working on some fences, rice carts and rice stores as well and I have to paint the edges black but other than that it's almost good to go and I can't wait to play some games on this table next weekend!

Great looking table!
I quite agree! 👍
-
That is an incredible table. Excellent work.
-
Thanks a lot guys! Had a great game this weekend - we used Ravenfeast rules with some parts from ToH - worked out well and it was a great day. Here are some shots, more will follow:
-
Looks great :)
-
That’s a lovely looking little set-up, well done :-*
-
Beautiful table and figures.
-
That's a great looking playing surface, was there any particular reason you went long and thin?
The towel thatch on the 4 ground buildings looks much better than the teddy bear fur in my opinion, it improves the buildings no end, but I guess it's all a question of taste.
