Title: Herero War Project
Post by: Viper4Dan on January 21, 2023, 07:03:42 PM
I've started a new collection of figures for the Herero War in German Southwest Africa (Namibia). The plan is to write a simple set of game specific rules to use at conventions. Presently, I've completed 70 Herero foot, 12 mounted, and 40 Schutztruppe. The Herero  are from a variety of ranges, while all my Germans are Bob Murch's lovely Pulp Figures sculpts. I need to work on German artillery and cavalry, some terrain  and perhaps a train. As they say  here is my work in progress.

extremely interesting project...one of my favourite colonial wargame sideshows..me too i already have the minis...Hereros mixed bunch..German Schutztruppe mainly from  from HLBS..
my inspirational main source is the extremely detailed German Official History of the period that had been, before WW1,  translated also in Italian. Plenty of small skirmishes and everything meticoulously related with detailed combat maps..i'm also waiting from Germany the TSATF Hereros War  scenario book   published by Roy Jones and Eric Alvarado that should also be easily available in UK and USA...i'll follow with interest your project..if you need anything (Toes, battle maps ecc...) just ask me..maybe i can find it trough my Official History book source.

Roy Jones’ scenario book is essential reading for the period, highly recommended and readily adapted to other rule sets.

It’s still a ‘to do’ project for me - I’m struggling to find suitable Herero figures, so all suggestions welcome. I know Askari Miniatures do a pack, there’s some from Tiger Miniatures, I’m looking at suitable Boers that could be used as well.

Some of the Iron Duke orange River range might be of use. They have a lot of Africans on horses with guns mostly Basotho but they do a pack of mounted Griquas that could be useful

Caliver have it listed on eBay - I’d give them a call to check availability.

Or contact the author via their website: hererowars.com

Honourable Lead Boiler Suit.

Just remember that those Askari in the top right corner are for German East. There were no regular native Schutztruppe units in SW Africa. There is a pretty useful page detailing what the German auxiliaries looked like here:

Hi,
are they useful?

I'd say so. Their leather equipment isn't right for the region (German troops there had their own particular design for some reason), but unless you take pride in being a supreme button counter I wouldn't worry too much about it. They are wearing the iconic Südwester hat on their heads, which is perfect.
