Having recently finished painting up 300+ miniatures for Conan the board game I thought I would catch a break from painting huge board game projects. But, of course, I was lured into buying a used copy of CDMD season 1, 2, Yog Sothoth and Black Goat of the Woods.
I played if a couple of times with my wife to see if the game was any fun before pouring hours into painting the minis. Some 7 sessions later here we are... started with the smaller miniatures from the bottom tray of the base game. Cultists, Deep Ones and Ghouls. I think the larger monsters will be a lot fun to paint, I have lots of ideas for oil washes and airbrushing weird colors.
For this project I also stocked up on some 20 bottles of AK47 3rd generation acrylic paints. Simply superb paints and have become my favorite painting range to use.
-
Looking good :-*
I bought those games for the very same reason. However, mine are still very firmly at the bottom of the painting queue :( One of the main reasons is the very stuff you're looking forward to - trying to do justice to those sorts of monsters is a daunting thought :'(
One of these days they shall be called forth and painting will begin :D
I'm not familiar with the AK47 brand, I shall stick them on the "to be investigated" list
-
I really recommend the AK 3rd gen paints. The yellow and red paints are pigment rich, and I also got a paint called "lead grey" which is a grey/green which is perfect for both highlightning black and to be used as a base for turqouise colors. The paints also don't separate and require pretty much zero shaking prior to use.
-
Great looking figures!
-
Nicely done! If you ever fancy painting my Conan and Death May Die stuff let me know :D :D :D :D
-
Speed painted my way through these monsters today. The Byakhee, Shoggoth, Haunting Horror and Fire Vampire.
The last "monster minion" from the core box - the Cthonian entity , was almost done but I ended up repainting it since I was not happy with the colors. Currently waiting for the oil wash to dry. Once the Cthonian is done I will move on to painting the bosses and their designated minions from the Season 1 core box - Cthulhu and Hastur.
-
They look really cool!
-
Whoa, these are impressive!!
-
Yesterday I undercoated, basecoated with an airbrush and oil washed all the remaining monsters including Cthulhu, Hastur, Star spawn and Cthonian entity (mostly had to wait until oil washed were fully dry yesterday after doing the basecoating with airbrush). Having fully dried over night I re-re-repainted the Cthonian entity. Still extremely unhappy with the paintjob but I don't care anymore at this point. Just had a very difficult time trying to figure out a unique paint scheme that worked for the model. It's good enough to play with.
I also finished Hastur and the 4 Hastur disciples/cultists. These were all superb minis and very enjoyable to paint. I came down with a very harsh cold earlier this week and todays pounding headache prevents me from finishing Cthulhu and the Star spawn this afternoon. Both models are mostly finished after all the oil washes so pretty much highlights and some details left to do. Will most likely finish them tomorrow and also by then start painting some of the 10 investigators from the core box.
-
Great work again!
I like the cocept of the Hasthur cultists.
-4 Tommy guns please!
-Ok, but what do you need them for?
-You know, we have this buddy, the 5m tall tentacled eldritch monstrosity from beyond the veil of reality.
-Yep. So?
-We have to protect him, maybe someone wants to beat or kidnap him.
-
Fantastic!!

lol lol Too true !
-
Cthulhu and Star Spawn finished. Cursed myself for messing up the Star spawn base with super glue as the model slid a couple of mm to the side during fitting.
Base game investigators are to be painted next.
-
Absolutely stunning colour transitions! I really like what you're doing there.
-
I like the blueish scheme too!
-
Thanks guys! :)
Half of the heroes from the core game painted up.
-
As I no longer have a blog to refer to I will leave this link to my painting thread over at BoardGameGeek. I got lots of questions about painting and tools from the Cthulhu Death May Die community on facebook and on BGG so I made a large compilation focusing on the tools, paints and some other stuff. LAF does not allow for more than 8 pictures per post and this entry had quite a few more.
Next similar post will be a step-by-step painting some of the larger monsters, hopefully that kind of tutorial will fit here as well.

Great looking characters.

:-* :-* :-*
-
Wonderful work!
-
Second half of the core game heroes finished. Had a lot of fun painting these and spent some extra time on each hero. I like that there are so "few" regular humans in the game to paint up, as it allows for speed painting large monsters and spending quality time on a select few models.
I will probably paint up Yog Sothoth and Shub-Niggurath next to have more boss encounters ready for the game. There will likely be some kind of tutorial on those boxed sets as well. After that painting of the season 2 boxed set will commence.
-
Beautiful work! I have the same figures and haven’t painted them yet- will definitely be referring to this thread for inspiration.
-
Wow the two pages contain some awesome painting, the speed paints are phenomenal but those investigators…incredible brush work
-
Thanks for the kind words guys. I started painting up the additional bosses, Yog-Sothoth, and the Black Goat today.
It's still a rough work in progress, currently waiting for the oil and enamel washes to dry before I can move on to the next step. Trying to document as I go so that I can post a tutorial once they are finished.
Thank god for owning an airbrush, can't imagine painting the dark young and the Black Goat solely by hand. It would take forever with all the tentacles!
-
Some pictures of gameplay for a change. We played scenario 6 from the core box. Pretty bland compared to most of the other ones. Having played through all 6 basic scenarios we enjoyed scenario 3, 4 and 5 a lot. Scenario 2 was OK, My wife HATES "fire" so can't get her to replay scenario one haha.
Anyways, the showdown with Hastur was quite intense, as the Kid and Borden died due to Yellow sign effects soon after Hastur spawned, leaving Rasputin and sister Beth to handle him. It looked as if we were going to fail the scenario when Hastur made his final jump to a yellow portal at the far end of the board. Sister Beth, was almost insane with 1 slot left on the sanity track when she moved in and dealt 11 wounds with her one and only attack. She died from insantity effects right after. Then Rasputin ran in and dealt the final blow as the sole survivor.
He would have been killed by the remaining cultists and monsters, and had no "spare deaths" left. But a win nonetheless.
We will be replaying scenario 3-5 until I start painting up season 2 content.
-
Another nice set of figures, must have been a great game with them!
-
Painted up the Black Goat, one of the add-on bosses for the game. Unfortunately I had a horrible varnish accident halfway through :o Had to do my best to salvage the paintjob.
A longer explanation as to what happened, and a tutorial on how this mini was painted is posted on BoardGameGeek https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3013966/painting-whole-thing-season-1-2-and-some-expansion
-
Nice painting (I imagined the Black Goat a lot less humanoid though)

Yeah CMON took some liberties with re-imagining a lot of the monsters and some old ones. There are some artistic choices that I really don't agree with regarding mostly monsters in the season 2 expansion.
-
The Black Goat and the dark spawns all painted up. Had very little time for painting this week, but hope to paint up Yog-Sothoth and Wilbur Whateley later this weekend.
The Dark Spawn were pretty much speed painted with airbrush, oil wash, some drybrushing and minor details added by regular brush at the every end.
-
Nice painting!
Still not a big fan of the sculpt though, walking on two goat legs is missing the point where Goat is just a name given by people looking for mental hooks to understand the otherworldly horrors.
-
Wilbur Whateley and very early WIP of Yog-Sothoth as I tried to decide what main color to use.
@Freddy, if you think the Black Goat has a stupid design - then you will be delighted to know that one of the boss monsters that players have to defeat by combat in the upcoming Kickstarter is Azathoth lol
-
Nice models :)

I already saw a model for ,,colour from outer space". Thre sculpture was not that bad, but I am waiting for painters to find the colour previously unknown on planet Earth :)
-
Yog-Sothtoth painted up. A very complext miniature and probably the most complext miniature out of the Cthulhu Death May Die collection that I've painted so far.
I wanted to work in some additional colors instead of painting the whole thing pale, and think it worked out quite OK.
-
Now this is cool (painting ofc, but the sculpt too)
-
Prepped all the monsters from Season 2 yesterday, and started painting up some of them today so we can try out at least two new scenarios.
Star vampires and Bokrug.
-
They are nice! (Bokrug looks like a Tyranid :) )
-
Some more season 2 monsters: Yugg, Tcho-Tcho, Dimensional Shambler and Flying polyp.
Got to admit, not that fun to paint and kind of pushing myself to finish this lot with the monster minis I least look foward to painting for last. At least there will be some fun characters to paint from the hero section of the box once the monsters are done.
-
They might not have been much fun to paint, but you certainly got them to look good! The flying polyp appeals to me, maybe because of the bright colours on the eyes.
-
I also really like the bright eyed polyp.
-
Some more monsters, Nightgaunt and Elder Thing
-
Nice! I would'we painted the nightgaunts for some dark blue, but that is kinda cliché.
-
Yeah I agree, thgouh I felt that I had already done the paintjob they should have had on the haunting horrors. Also, I was pretty much uninspired and just wanted to get these done. Still had trouble as I was not happy with the end result twice. So the minis are a weird mix of airbrush, oil wash, drybrush, oil wash, drybrush oil wash again... lol
The ugliest and least fun monsters are left to do, really been pushing those to the bottom of the queue -hound of tindalos. Looks nothing like I would have imagined and have a stupid hole through their body. Half the mini is pretty cool with the brain, maw and claws, but half the mini looks like a weird mechanical thing.... Will try to paint those up in the week so I can get to the remaining 10 heroes from season 2.
-
After a break I mustered the energy to finally paint up the two hound of tindalos monsters. Horrible sculpt and design choices combined made this the least fun I've had painting minis for this game. Fortunately all the monsters are done and I have 10 heroes left to paint that should offer a pretty good time.
The main colors for this paintjob was inspired by the old Arkham Horror 2nd edition Hound of Tindalos artwork.
-
Hounds of Tyranidlos, yes, at least the painting looks good :)
I also put my hand onto some figures from this game, we will see :)
-
Your painting really brings thse gribblies to life. Awesome work!
-
First half of season 2 characters. Started painting up the ones I perceived as most useful.
-
Great, I mean GREAT painting there. Very well done. :-*
-
Miss scarlet stands out for the simple but striking colour choices but they are all exceptional 8)
-
Lovely work 8)
-
Brilliant! 👍
-
I really like these new characters!
-
Fantastic as always :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks for the kind words guys! 5 more heroes to go before I'm finished with this project (until season 3 Kickstarter arrives).
-
Season 2 characters finished - and with that all the miniatures for Cthulhu Death May Die Season 1 & 2, Yog Sothoth and Black Goat of the Woods expansions.
The wait for the delivery of the CDMD: Fear of the Unknown Kickstarter begins lol
At least all miniature based board games are painted up and I can look to some other minis I have in my pile of shame.
-
Another bunch of loveliness.
-
Nice, my favourite is the peasant with the green shirt.
-
Great work, yet again! 👍
-
Thanks again for the kind words guys.
After a short break I dug deep in my pile of shame and started assembling a bunch of plastic medieval minis for SAGA. Will most likely start posting medieval stuff soon if you have any interest in that period/theme. :)
-

Would like to see your paintwork on medievals, or just about anything really.
-
Amazing! Love it!
-
superb brush-work on great figures.
