Build Something Competition 2023 'The Potato Cup'
This description has been wildly plagiarised (with permission!) from my 2022 post, which in turn plagiarised Hammers’ similar post for the 2021 BSC.
The theme for the BSC2023 is: PLACE OF WORSHIP
GENERAL RULES
Please use this child board in the Workbench section to post your build threads.
The official start date is 01:00 GMT Saturday 4th February 2023, and all applicants must notify their intent to take part on the registration thread by Saturday 11th February, 2023. They will then be listed in the registration post. The list of entrants will be in order of which their intent has been posted. Please let me know if your username is wrong in my list.
YOU CAN START YOUR BUILD THREAD IN THIS SUB-FORUM DIRECTLY.
Please name your thread according to this pattern:
BSC2023 <member name> <build title> - for example, 'BSC2023 Vanvlak Holy Asteroids', where ‘Vanvlak’ would be the user's forum name and 'Holy Asteroids' would be the object being built. (I had to make an effort not to type 'Holy Asteroids, Batman'... :D)
If you change your mind, if Real Life intrudes or if you realise after some contemplation the theme is not to your taste - just let me know and I shall remove your name.
One entry per member (no joint contributions).
A dedicated Gallery will be set up just for hosting contest images so please post your photos there. You can then add them to your build thread - any questions regarding this just let me know.
Finished entries must be submitted no later than midnight Sat 15th April 2023, and the voting will start shortly after. That should allow for plenty of time to build something.
The build threads of the entrants should include as many progress shots as possible, including sketches, sources of inspiration etc. NO PHOTOS OF THE FINISHED ENTRY SHOULD BE POSTED ON THE THREAD - painting in progress is not allowed, only primed entries are permissible on the build threads - if you are unsure then please ask. I would however turn a blind eye to small details which have to be finished before assembly (for example a pilot and controls in an enclosed cockpit).
Keep in mind that the documentation of the build process has some impact on how people vote.
The first entries must consist of either one photo OR a photo-montage of the finished piece. No photo manipulation will be allowed apart from cropping, white balance and contrast within reason. Again, if you are unsure then please ask. You may include one separate 'standard' figure in the final entry photo to indicate the relative size of the entry.
Photo size should be 1000x1000 pixels and sent as a jpeg to bsc2022submission@gmail.com- yes, I know the date on the email is 2022, not 2023, but it still works, so I am not going to create another email address.
Depending on the number of entries, voting will take place in one or more group, and then, again depending of the number of entries, the top one or two entries of each group will advance to a final vote.
You will be allowed to enter new photos between rounds if you like. It has proven a good idea to keep interest up among voters.
For the last round you will be allowed to use your build in a "fully dramatized" setting, meaning placing the model on a game board surrounded with as many wargames miniatures you like.
A NOTE ON BIAS AND CONDUCT
I (Vanvlak) will, hopefully be entering a build myself. I've done so in the previous edition I coordinated (I did not finish my bulld!). In the previous year I got 0 votes :D :D
While everyone is allowed, as per usual, to comment in progress threads, please keep things encouraging and constructive.
Although winners will be voted by the members collective of the LAF, if there is any sense of foul play the judges’ decision is final, although we would hope that it won't be necessary given the friendly nature of the LAF.
THEME RULES
The entry must include something that ties in with the theme of ‘Place of Worship’.
You have to construct a model (scenery, a vehicle, anything else) which has something to do with, or depicts, a place of worship. I very much appreciate that this can be very broad, but if you are uncertain whether your idea fits the bill correctly, pm me or post on the BSC thread to get a clarification.
One feature of the entries is that they should be practical gaming or scenery pieces, so no varnished walnut veneer bases or artful backdrops with LEDs and baroque or rococo trimmings.
Remember that the competition is run within the confines of the Workbench board: you have to build something. What singles out the Build Something Contest is that it is about construction of something new. The vast majority of the piece should be scratch built, and only 0-25% can be commercially bought items or figures. The rest must be handmade. If you have any questions either ask them here or via pm, but please label your pm Build Something 2023.
Any period or setting is allowed as long as it fits with the theme including sci-fi, historical, pulp, fantasy etc.
Just like previous years, any amount of 3D printing is allowed but we ask you to be especially diligent in including images from design steps (3D design files) and of part printouts in the your progress thread.
Conversion of commercially-bought items is allowed also e.g. as long as it is a major 'refactoring'. Another example could be a plastic aeroplane kit: adding a couple of extra parts to the kit would not be sufficient to qualify, but having some of the parts from a sprue on an entirely new build would be fine. Again, if in doubt, please ask.
It's not possible to cover all the eventualities, so please use your common sense and play fair. :D
Good luck, and happy building to all - and don't forget to REGISTER YOUR INTENT and START A THREAD.
Post any rules queries and comments as replies.
* The name 'The Potato Cup' comes from an early run of the competition where a number of items were offered to the winner, among them a raw unpeeled potato. The winner picked the potato. The name stuck. The prize does not exist, at least not until someone prints or builds a potato cup, whatever that is. Maybe it can be the theme for BSC2024...
-
Cool. Count me in. I'll just be doing a 3d design for printing as that is my skillset. Looking forward to seeing the wonderful creations made by everyone!
-
I'm in. I have several ideas and will need to pick one.
-
Maybe superfluous, as I already replied int he other thread, but yeah: I'm in :)
-
Yes, count me in , as I said on the other board ;)
-
I'm definitely in. Now I just need to figure out how to start...
-
I am in please add me I want to do a Gallic worship place
Cheers

The BSC is ticking along, and there's some really good entries (as usual) this year, with so many clever ways of doing stuff that the entries should be compiled in a book - maybe we should consider producing a PDF with ideas and pics after the end of this BSC.
Not everyone is advancing i.e. me - work has put its usual spanner in. But there's still some time to go until 15 April (when I'll be abroad....!).
-
Oh dear, I believe I can feel an extension coming on...
lol
-

I know the feeling mate, a combination of being away for work and then coming down with the lurgy has meant I haven’t even started yet. At this rate it will be a last minute effort on my part* lol
* but not after an extension.

To be fair Akula your last minute efforts end up looking spectacular.

real life getting in the way means my effort too will be 'last minute' :D
-
I say chaps, is it to late to enter, wot.
-
Strictly speaking, yes; but I would not object to your joining in, even though the deadline must remain the same (15 April if I remember correctly).
Unless anyone around objects, I'd say welcome to the fray.
-
No objection here.
-
The more the merrier :D
It is the 15th, even though I had it in mind it was the 10th. 15th is better, gives me an extra few days to panic :o
-
No objection from me. We have lost some,
so we could do with replacements.
-

No, I actually got it right for once, it was the 15th :D
-
Thanks, I am definitely very much not out (I'm in), thinking about doing the summit of Meneltarma on Numenor. or crusaders doing churchy things in Jerusalem.
-
Are you allowed to do special lighting for the photos? or is that photo manipulation.
-
Where does one post images of the finished build?
-
You don’t post pics of the finished build, you email them to Vanvlak, there’s an email adress in the first post of this thread, along with all the rules.
In any case you’re free to post any unpainted WIP pics but not of any painting, pics of the finished painted project is send in, and Vanvlak will then all post them in a new thread for judging.
-
I see, thanks.
-
And the first entry is in already :D :-*
It's good to be BSC coordinator :D
Don't panic, anyone, we still have almost a month to go. :D :D
-

Ta. Panic 'snooze button' duly hit. :D
-
Regrettably I’m going to have to drop out… without even having started… been away pretty much solid Feb/March, and illness wiped out what little free time I had.
Back home now and over the lurgy, but shattered…and need to spend sometime on the family… particularly Mrs Akky as I was away for both her birthday and our 25th Wedding Anniversary.
Just hope she doesn’t check the boot of my car before I can hide the goodies I picked up from Lord Raglan on the way home, as I doubt they will pass muster as an anniversary present lol
Good luck to everyone 8)
-
Sorry to hear that. I wish you well.
-
Sorry to hear that. I wish you well.
Ditto, especially with the car boot!

That sucks, but at least it will be easier for everyone else to win lol
-
So: one week to go, remember the deadline for completing your build and posting in the threads is the 15th of April.
I have received two entries so far.
This coming week I will be away until the 17th, and might not be able to reply, so don't panic if your emailed entry seems to go unnoticed.
Good luck to all remaining contenders.
-
I think I'm probably out, too much to do for Salute :?
-
I'm out too, also building stuff for a convention called Salute, but this time Trumpeter Salute in Vancouver, Canada
-
I'm out as well, my build just ain't working out right. :'(
-
Wow. Lots of folks dropping out, I could win something just through attrition. lol
-
Unfortunately I have to tap out as well :( I will not be able to finish painting the build today.
Being ill took too much of my time sadly.
I'm looking forward seeing all the finished projects though.
-
Of course it's up to the moderator but if we shift the final date to one or to weeks, it would be fine for me because I would like to see all this cool entries in the competion.
-
My entry has been sent. Good luck my fellows!
-
I have my final photo but need to scale it down to meet submission rules.
-
My entry has been sent. Good luck everyone. Now i can spend some time looking at other folks progress instead of worrying about mine. After I clean up the massive mess I made.
-
Sorry to hear about so many dropping out. Good luck to everyone else.
-
After I clean up the massive mess I made.
THAT is what I've not been doing for the last 55 years!
I'd better get started. lol lol lol
Sorry to hear about so many dropping out. Good luck to everyone else.
I agree with you.

How many people submitted entries this year?

Sorry for my long absence - I was away for a break, away from email and stuff, and am now catching up.
In spite of the apparently low number of entries, I have 21 in my inbox, which is not bad at all!
Well done guys.
I hope to get the polls up in the weekend, you are in for a treat :D :D :D

Blimey that’s a great turnout :o

OK, big mistake in the number.... you might remember I used the 2022 email address to avoid setting a new one up each time; so I was counting both 2022 and 2023 entries!!! Where's the blushing emoji when you need it?
The only excuse I have is I had just finished dealing with a backlog of 237 work threads and was a bit woozy... :'(
We have 11 entries.
-
We have 11 entries.
Drat! I was hoping to be in the top ten. :-[
-
Polls are up for round 1, with one group of five and one group of six.
Good luck to all.
I have a rough time choosing, in both groups. 8)
-
Are we missing Snitchythedogs Chronomancer shrine, I thought he had submitted his, he was certainly one of the first to finish his build
-

Based on past results you could be lol
-

That's true, it was so early I forgot about it; but I never received the photo in the usual email (I just checked again to make sure). Perhaps he didn't finish the painting? I'll PM.
-

I sent it in before the end date. There are only 11 entries showing and you said there were 21?? Just reread the thread
Sent it to the wrong dam address. Missed the B at the beginning when I copied and pasted and did not see a DNS error come back. Guess I can past photos now.
-
Wait a bit, maybe the guys will accept a reset :D
-
No objection here.
-
No objection here.
Whoa, that was fast - thank you!
Strictly speaking, the rules would say that we go ahead, but as this is a friendly business and there is no prize anyway, what would the participants say to a restart?
Here's my plan, but all participants in this round should agree:
I can reset the competition, this time with 4 groups of 3, that way the winners can pair off, and there would be a third and final round.
Would all participants at this stage agree?
I will send a mail from the competition email, so you can reply there for a degree of confidentiality if you prefer.
I will also see if I can stop the voting for now.
-
I agree
-
Yep no objections to a reset, would be a shame to miss a great entry because of a simple mistake
-
Thanks to all for your patience and especially to those who replied so rapidly.
-
I'm fine with a reset. I wasn't aware voting had started lol
-
I am more than happy just posting my photos and having the competition go on. It was my mistake.
-
Replied to the email, but happy to confirm here that I'm fine with the vote restarting
-
I agree. Would rather go against 2 than 5
-
No problem to restart
-
I have no problem with a restart.
-
me neither
-
Update: everyone said yes!
So we're back in business, except I have to reset all the polls.
Please be a bit patient whilst I restart, and randomize the entries again in groups of three.
-
Rather than random groups, it would make more sense to arrange like Wimbledon tennis tournament and use the first round to define seeds for the groups I.e. group 1 has 1st, 5th and 9th. Group 2 has 2nd, 6th and 10th etc.
-
Thank you everyone. I would have been happy to post images of mine and watch the results for the other entries.
-
snitchy, no worries, resetting the voting gives everyone a level playing field. Glad it worked out for you.
Question, though. If there are 21 entries, why only 12 in the first round? Maybe some rule I missed? No big deal, just curious.
And, yes, lots of cool entries seen so far.

Not 21...15...11(now 12) Simples! :D

Vanvlak accidentally counted entrees for both this year and last year. I think it is only 11 or 12 this year.
I should really learn to read all the responses to see if a question has been answered.
-
D'oh! I guess I needed to read further, too. :o
So, only twelve across the finish line? Well, good luck to all of us.
Life most certainly does get in the way - I had probably five weeks during the contest I was not able to touch my project. Getting it done was more of a challenge than expected. Biggest challenge? The "honey-do" list by a mile! lol
-
Perhaps we should start the 2024 contest immediately, so that we have ten months rather than ten weeks.
I'd still be panicking for the final 24 hours! lol
-
Make it be 10 days and start to panic immediately
-

That would work if it was to make a single small piece of scatter.

Now that would be an interesting 'theme', with the added bonus
of not taking up much shelf space.
:D

Might generate more interest if it is a quick competition for a small piece.

Might generate more interest if it is a quick competition for a small piece.
Would also make sure that the thing gets finished, in my case.
Or at least more likely.
I might set up a smaller BSC if there is interest, for a small scenery element. But now back to the votes!
-
How about the traditional one as it has been, and an Autumn 'Build Something Small' version?
-
How about the traditional one as it has been, and an Autumn 'Build Something Small' version?
Could be an idea - anyone else interested? This would probably have a size constraint, to ensure no-one goes over the top and it's kept fast and furious :D
Meanwhile - new polls are up. I hope no-one got left out, or got included in more than one poll!
-

I'd be very interested.

I'm interested. If i may, i suggest sizing around 2x2 inches, or 4 square inches in case someone wanted to do a 1"x4".

I think 4''x4'' should be the max size.
-
I'm definitely interested, I just don't know if I can build anything small lol
-
4" x 4" maximum size should work well, with smaller allowed of course. I'd be happy to run it, even if there's just few of us. I'd make it a little less official than the BSC, if that's even possible! :D

Maybe have it be a "club" thing limited to first 50 with one of those signature badges to the entrants?

And me an old fashioned kind of a guy too. lol lol lol
I last read some Tolkien when at school as a pupil, in the 1960s !!!!
Obviously long overdue a re-read.

Good question. I would like to post more pictures & don't expect to progress. :D
-
Not yet - I usually leave this open for two weeks before closing voting.
I also will not have time before the weekend, so it's a moot point :D
-
Well, as you are doing all the hard work, I suppose we can let you off. :D

4"x4"x4" maximum. Don't want someone submitting a really tall obelisk kind of against the idea of "small"
-

I was thinking the same thing.

What about 16 square inches & 4” high, then if you needed something 8” x 2” it would fit? ;)

I'll ask ChatGPT to design the competition :D ;)

Well, as you are doing all the hard work, I suppose we can let you off. :D
Why, thank you. Just this once of course, I suppose... :D
-
Right:
I have locked voting, and Round 2 will start as soon as I get the polls organised.
We will have two groups with two entries in each.
The winners are:
Group 1 - Mr Tough Guy - Sacred Shinto Tree
Group 2 - Overlord - Chinese Temple
Group 3 - DrMathias - Root-Shrine
Group 4 - ichwillauch - Needle Rock Portal
Congratulations to the four semi-finalists, and also to everyone else for finishing your builds, and making voting tough for the rest of us 8)
-
Thanks Vanvlak for doing all the hard work.
Good luck to the four still in it.
-
Thanks has.been :D
Meanwhile: I set up the polls for the semifinals. These will close on SUNDAY 21 MAY - that's today week.
The winner of each will go on to the final round.
Voting for these will be a headache, all four are superb. 8) 8)
I think a vote of 'WELL DONE' should go to all those who completed their builds; and also to whoever suggested the theme (I am sorry, I did not have time to scroll through the theme suggestion threads to find out who it was - mother's day lunch etc. at my place). This topic was quite clear cut, with no difficult questions, and also produced a very wide variety of interpretations. 8)
-
"Thanks Vanvlak for doing all the hard work." <<<<< Indeed!
Not sure about the first few hours but from then on I lead the voting all the way through the first round - from the rear! lol
Thanks to those who voted for my entry and congratulations to those who moved on to the next round.
I can now, when I have a bit of time, start posting images of the full university I built. Might not be today but soon.
Good luck to the final four - have to go vote now.
-
Hearty thank you to Vanvlak from me too for running things. Tough competition again this year and a respectable number of entries. Good luck to everyone moving on and kudos for those who are not. All of the entries were outstanding.
-
Thanks guys :D
-
Sorry for the delay - the weekend came and went with a mess of stuff to deal with; I will try to set up the final by Wednesday. :'(
-
Don't worry about it :), You've done a spiffing job so far!
-
Don't worry about it :), You've done a spiffing job so far!
Hear, hear! :)
-
Hear hear here!
-
Aww shucks, thanks guys :D
Should make it by tomorrow, fingers crossed.
-
And I did - the final round poll is up, go and vote for the winner. I will close the poll on 4th June. Good luck to the finalists, and thanks for the great show to all semifinalists. :D
-
Well done everyone.
-
The end (of voting) is nigh: I will close the poll at 13:00 local time (GMT + 2 hours, including summertime) at least if I haven't nodded off in the June afternoon heat here!
It's been a loooooong one this year, with a restart, and a delay (when I got swamped by work) and fake news (when I thought we had 21 entries, as I had used last year's submission email and added up the entries of two years).
I have to again thank all those who supported the BSC, all those who signed up, and those who attempted a build; and most of all, the twelve finalists: thank you for the show.
The final is a tight one, and ichwillauch and MrToughGuy provided us poor voters with a tough choice. Both are winning entries, with one ahead by a short neck.
And it's over for BSC2023 - congratulations to MrToughGuy for the win with the Sacred Shinto Tree!
Good afternoon to everyone, tune in again for BSC2024 in some months' time.
Unless we go ahead with the suggested SmallBSC! :D :D ;)
-
Thank you Vanvlak for running this excellent competition. And well done MrToughGuy!
-
Congrats to Mr Tough Guy! Very well done. All of this years entries were top notch. Thank you Vanvlak for running it and do you know how much interest was generated for a build something small competition?
-
Thanks guys: about the SmallBSC: well, a few of you did, not very many - but I might create a thread and see whether there is interest in this. If there is, I can organise this.
-
Congrats to Mr Tough Guy for the win and to everyone who finished the build on time :)
As always it was a treat to see the finished entries.
Also big Thank you! to Vanvlak for organizing the event. I hope there will be a BSC2024. :)
-

That is a great idea.
-
Congratulations to Mr Tough Guy for the win, and to Vanvlak for running the thing.
I'm not sure about SmallBSC, I will need to see what's involved ???
-
Congratulations to mr tough guy for a truly amazing job. All the entries were really good too, so everyone should be proud.
Thanks to vanvlak for running it once again.
-
Congratulations to Mr Tough Guy for the win, and to Vanvlak for running the thing.
I'm not sure about SmallBSC, I will need to see what's involved ???
The conversation swirled around a small terrain piece with a short build time. The BCS tends to be pretty epic builds so some people may not want to try their hand either out of time constraints or storage space.
